  1. "Calm the hell down first!"
  2. "Then next time lead with that instead of trying to snatch her." Aolicei kept trying to move past.
  3. "Your niece? You're - what, fourteen?"
  4. Kris procured the Macrosmos's most efficient form of list maintenance: a note card. "This is a list of supplies we'll need to ensure a safe climb," he explained, setting it down on the table. A few of the items had been crossed off already. "The rest of them have been ordered and should be at the general store soon. From there we just need the right plants." He brought out a second card - this one written on both sides - and handed it to the others.
  5. Aolicei fell away from the guard. "Just try it," she snapped.
  6. "I don't believe so," Fadran replied, standing up with a grunt. "I think we're done here, so we can probably get going back to the Inn."
  7. Not really. The Boss keeps everything up to par for the most part with his own fancy magic powers. He just can't take care of every single little thing.
  8. "We are alone." Aolicei said without skipping a beat. She stepped into the dining hall.
  9. All sorts of things. Really depends on what kind of magic you have. Because so many kinds of people are coming here all the time, we have access to all kinds of magic to maintain the Inn and make things comfortable.
  10. Aolicei just stared him down, her grip on Shana not shifting even an inch.
  11. He's the Wizard of the Clock Tower. Seriously; he's grumpy all the time. 'S what he gets for basically living inside a giant alarm clock.
  12. Current openings are... everywhere. Vacity ducked back behind the receptionist's desk to find a list. Except lifeguard, I guess, because the pool's closed for the season. We're looking for receptionists, janitors, spell technicians, breakfast chefs, eldritch storeroom plumbers, cookie de-spikers, and... Vacity squinted at the last item on the list and sighed. Mr. Chrono is asking for an assistant again. I wouldn't take that one - he never keeps anyone for more than a week.
  13. "Climbing mishaps. Spell failure. You hear stories about mountain lions, but I'd be less worried about them than spraining your ankle or forgetting a component."
  14. "Evidently not," Aolicei affirmed, "considering the kind of rabble he decided were fit enough to lead a kingdom."
  15. "Again, the climb can be somewhat treacherous for the inexperienced. Annual casualties are low, of course, but injuries and failed expeditions are common. That said, I suppose the catch is that it will take a significant amount of preparation and no small amount of caution."
  16. "She's tired, you know? Not to mention food coma from all that breakfast she had today. She's fine."
  17. Aolicei picked Shana up, hoisting her into a comfortable grip. "No one ever said we had to leave her."
  18. "We don't have the resources to cosmically expand across this universe, and any others don't have the same form of magic required to have these plants produce Vange properly. Besides; this mission isn't about growing more Moonsuckle. What we get from this one expedition should be more than enough."
  19. Aolicei perked up a little. "Is he finally going to tell us what's going on?"
  20. It's not really his fault, though. The place just reopened, so we're a little short-staffed.
  21. "I suppose some information on this world might be helpful for you all..." Kris began tapping the table again. "The government is quite authoritarian, even though it's electoral and merit-based. Due to the volatile nature of such commonplace plants, this is really the most efficient social contract for the world. You need permits for anything and everything here: collecting plants, growing plants, harvesting plants, owning plants. The rarer and more powerful the plant is, the harder it is to get to it. It took me a year and a half of building social credit and screening processes to get my hands on this pass here."
