The power of the Well regenerated every 1024 years and then needed to be used in order to keep Ruin locked up and it was assumed that the person taking the power would be the Hero of Ages, but that was wrong. When Sazed takes the power he figures out that it's not a new Hero every age, it's one Hero for all the Ages. It was always Sazed as the Hero, though Vin's part was very important was the one who was needed to actually kill Ruin.

I remember him being mentioned, but it's been years since I read AoL (right after it came out) and wasn't super into it at first either.

Yes but only once and it was as they came out, so I could be cloudy here. Is my thought above disproved then? I was going to wait to reread Era 2 until the last one comes out, but heck, maybe I'll have to read them sooner.

So with the original trilogy fresh in my head (just finished rereading tonight) along with SH, I'm fairly certain that Kelsier took over Marsh's body. At the end of HoA, Marsh only has one eye spike, and we know 'Ironeyes' is still alive (or at least his body). Marsh also had the most Allomantic and Feruchemical spikes Hemalurgically implanted, so could technically be immortal, but Kelsier taking it over seems likely.

A bit late to the party here, but just finished a reread with SH integrated per this post and it worked out fantastically. I'd read SH when it came out, but wanted to do a reread with the trilogy to have it all together and fresh (reread Elantris first too to have my It fresh). Plus this post finally made me create an account instead of lurking... Anyway, on to Warbreaker next, will probably wait to reread Era 2 until the last book comes out.
