    When she finally calmed down - wiping tears from her eyes - she sighed. "I didn't mean literally thrown to the side. I meant metaphorically! As in ignored."

    Nico wiped his eyes. "I doesn't know... Do what you will, Alienor. I just..." He sighed. "I don't want nob'dy to get hurt."

    And Nico held tight to that little girl, holding back full sobs.

    "'Livia cannae be stopped." He put his head in his hands and cried. "I shoulda been brave eight years ago. Iv'an sat me down. Said, 'Now, Nico, you's a man, you are. I know your father's gone now, but you gots to be brave an' I know you can be.' I told him I would be, but I'm not. I'm a coward I am, always 'ave been. If... Iffin' Iv'an was 'ere, 'e'd say, 'Nico, stand up, get'cher self together. You's pathetic you are, an' iffin' your daddy Kimby could see ya, he'd be disappointed, oh yes.'"

    Nico sat down, the poor thing, his face white as a sheet. "Even iffin' I kill me-self," he said, "She'll just find some other poor boy to take. Truth is, that's the only reason I'm still alive."

    Nicolae's mouth worked and a tear rolled down his cheek before he said, "No."

    "Yeah, well. She'll only hurt people if I does som'tin' wrong. Wendy tried to help me an' now she's in the medical wing, she is. Iffin' I just keep..." He looked at the little girls and held his tongue. "Iffin' I does what she asks of me, everyone'll be fine."

    Nico regarded Alienor seriously. "Yer Highness... with all respect due ya, what are you gonna do 'bout it? Iv'an hates you, what power does you even really hold?"

    The serving boy smiled faintly at the idea of Arabella kicking Allivia in the shins, but his smile faded soon thereafter; Alli wouldn't care that Bella was a kid, she'd kill the lass. "She'll kill you, Bella..." he whispered. "You can Katie, and she wouldna even live with a mark on her conscience 'bout it."

    Nicolae blushed deeply. Like miss Wendy? Like like her? He gulped, but answered the question. "O' course I want tuh see her again. An'..." He looked at Alienor. She made him blush. "I-I-I... I can handle it on my own..."

    Nicolae’s face fell and he sighed, opening the door all the way. “You can come in, miss, I’m sure Lady Alienor will like to see you.”

    Nico’s bruised face popped out of the door frame. He looked side to side for a moment before looking down and grinning. “Oh, hi-o, ‘Bella!”
