    “Caden?” Riva Praetorium regarded her husband sourly from the top of the stairs. She sported a magnificent blue gown that left her back, shoulders, and an impressive amount of her chest bare. Current fashion stated that chubbier women were more desirable - having enough money to maintain that was quite attractive, after all - but Riva had never hidden her defined cheeks and collarbones. It made her stand out and connected her with death; a silent yet overt reminder of her power. If she was going to be feared, she would like to look incredible and noteworthy doing it. Unfortunately, her date did not appear to share that sentiment to the same degree. “I believe there is a ball tonight,” Riva growled, one eyebrow raised. “Being fashionably late is one thing, but barely getting there in time to see the king lock up for the night is quite another. Unless… You don’t seriously plan to attend wearing that, do you?” I had always imagined my knight in shining armor to be wearing sleeves. She paused. “You… you are coming, aren’t you? You promised over dinner.”

    Nicolae fell asleep on her shoulder.

    He let out a trembling sigh and closed his eyes. "M'kay. I... I's sorry, miss."

    "Aww, damn it to Mal, Wendy, gimme the decency of hidin' my tears a' least. I's not supposed to cry, it's embarassin'."

    With a sniff he started crying and cursed himself for doing so. Today had been a hard day. "Stars curse it," he swore, trying desperately to wipe his eyes.

    After bracing himself, Nico felt her arms around him. Tension immediately dissipated and he took a shaky breath, climbing up onto the bed next to her so he could hug her back properly. "Thank you," he whispered.

    Nico wandered over to Wendy and knelt down next to her bed. "I get hit a lot, so go ahead."

    "That an order, miss?" He looked up at the nurse for permission to obey Wendy.

    Nicolae blushed, smiling nervously. "You wouldna kill a wounded man."

    He nodded. "Sorry. I's... just glad I gets to see ya."

    "Well, she didna do it, miss." Nico bit his lip, preparing to lie. "'Livia said she'd kill you if we saw each other again. An' I knew you was in medical bay so the only way I was gonna be seein' you was if I..." He nodded at his bloody arm.

    "And if she did?" Nico asked.

    "Wendy..." said Nico through gritted teeth. "It ain't nothing, 'ear? I'm fine, I am."

    "Uh... it ain't me hand, miss." He shakily unbuttoned his sleeve to reveal bloody bandages.

    "Aww, Wendy!" Nico leaned in to give her a hug, then remembered his hands and chuckled weakly. "Y-You doin' alrighty there, miss?"

    Nico groaned, but let her lead him along. 'Livia'll kill me...

    "Uh..." He raised his hand, then, upon seeing the blood, thrust it behind his back again. "Um... I can explain."

    “Ah…. Your patient… Wendy?” He bit his lip and clasped his massive hands in front of him by instinct, forgetting the blood. “Uh… I cannae see her, miss. I… got things to do, yeah.”

    Nicolae felt something wet on his hand. A glance downward revealed that blood had begun to drip down his wrist and onto his fingers, apparently having bled through the bandages. "Dammit," he muttered, hastily putting his hands behind his back. "Uh... I gots tuh... G-gotta- G'bye!" As he ran out the door, he bumped right into the maid that had been sent to fetch him for Wendy.

    "Well, for starters, what Darrin was going with you and your... organization."

    "Oh! By all means, don't let ol' Nicolae get in yer way. An', uh... happy birthday, sir."

    “Iv’an… I’m honored you’d trust me with your Alienor, bu’... I just cannae. Not only does I not deserve the position, but we jus’ don’ get along, sir. I wanna be your servant again, sir, not ‘ers.”

    Nico nodded. "Yeah, nineteen, tha's right. Um... It's about Alienor, it is."

    "Oh!" Nico felt himself smile genuinely. "'ello, miss, Louis. Good tuh be seein' ya."
