  1. “anyone else you asked would piss thier pants and run away,” Riva said.
  2. "I... I still doesn't understand why, sir."
  3. "Then you's selling yourself short, sir." He smiled. "Thanks for everything."
  4. "I don't want to dance with anyone else," Riva asserted, stamping a heeled foot. Nicolae's face fell. "Now why's that, yer 'ighness?"
  5. Riva scoffed, but stayed silent for a moment so she could drag him off the dais. Once they were clear of the stairs, she pushed him against a pillar. "Listen. I came here to dance, soldier boy. Maybe you've forgotten, but I am the Raveness and I demand you dance with me. I don't care if you step on my toes. I've dreamt of today for decades and you are not going to ruin it just because you feel your moves are a little rusty, understand?" "I mean... that's what me father asked you to be. An' I doesn't have him, so if it's anyone, it's you."
  6. Nico sighed, some tension he didn't know he'd been holding falling down to the floor. "I understand. I just... I sees you like a father, you know that."
  7. "Even still..." Nico folded his arms. "I doesn't wanna be treated like that no more."
  8. "You think I'm a whore..." Nico muttered. "I's... I'm not. Promise." "Yes," she growled back. "You come to balls to dance, Caden."
  9. She smirked. "Very funny. You still have to dance with me, silly!"
  10. "And more," she whispered. She planted a kiss on his cheek for the whole court to see.
  11. "Sir... I'm offended you're thinkin' it was me what made the rift."
  12. "Absolutely. Now come on!" She took his arm and descended down the dais. It was magical Since her first ball she'd imagined entering with a man on her arm and now here she was. At the mention of the Raveness from the announcer, almost every head in the ballroom turned to see what outfit the nightterror was sporting. Several small gasps came when the crowd noticed that Caden was with her and a giddy grin gallivanted 'cross her face. She turned her head to see what expression Caden was sporting. Surely even he couldn't deny the magic.
  13. "I'll keep workin' for her iffin' you want me to. I just feel like there'd be someone else better for the job. A girl, prob'ly, too. Doesn't feel right for me to be servin' a lady, sir."
  14. "The Raveness and her husband General Caden Praetorium," Riva instructed the announcer to say. She held herself like the torturess for show, but once she turned to Caden, she grinned and barely held in a girly squeal.
  15. "Oh, stop being such a downer, Caden!" She laughed, running up the steps with Caden's hand in hers. Somehow, the lights of the castle seemed brighter than ever. "C'mon, they're going to announce us!" "Ah, tha's sweet of her, it is. But anyway, I's sorry, Highness. Um..." He shifted uncomfortably. "This mighta be a bad time, sire, but... You said you'd a-get back to me 'bout Alienor..."
  16. "And wha's causin' you stress on your special evenin', sir?"
  17. “That’s fair, yer Highness, but this is different. I’m worried about you.”
  18. Nicolae Kimby stood by his king's side as always. His wounds from the day previous had since scabbed over and he was right back to his normal, cheery self. Allivia hadn't shown up to sleep with him the night previous and though he had his meeting with Fischer coming up to hang over his head, he was right giddy looking for a face in the crowd. He hadn't seen her yet, but Wendy should be here eventually. Cuddling with her yesterday had made Allivia's threat seem far away and he was determined to ask the girl to dance tonight. But in the meantime... "Uh... sir? You don't look so happy, 'specially considering it's yer birthday."
  19. "Oh, c'mon, Caden!" She practically pulled him out of the carriage. "Isn't it wonderful?" The smile on Riva's face was an expression with joy the likes of which Caden had never seen before, at least not from his wife.
  20. A few hours later, the newly-wed couple arrived at the palace. There were plenty of people there already and as they pulled up, Riva had a wide-eyed look about her. She'd attended balls for eighty something years, yet for some reason, the experience felt totally and completely new. She'd never arrived by carriage before and certainly not with a date. She was, after all, the Raveness. Who in their right mind would go out with her? A small gasp escaped her when the door was opened by a coachman and she smiled, strapping her raven mask on over her immaculately done makeup. "By the Stars..."
  21. This carriage wasn't nearly as crowded as the ride Riva had taken to Keep Praetorium, but she leaned into Caden anyway.
  22. “Maybe not, but it’s courteous.” Please, Caden. This is my dream come true.
  23. “Thank you. Truly.” Riva took her husband’s arm and the two of them walked out to the carriage together. “Help me up?” She asked, offering her hand
  24. “Awww, poor Caden.” She giggled, but smiled at him lovingly. “This really does mean the world to me. I hope you know that.” She took his hand. “Let’s go out to the carriage now, shall we?”
  25. “But dressing up is part of the fun!” She straightened out his cape, continuing the job he’d started by wiping him down for dirt.
