    Riva chuckled. "Yes, Caden, it was indeed wonderful. I'm glad you admit at least that much. You're funnier than you give yourself credit."

    Nico lit up brighter than ever before, barely able to mumble the words, "See ya." His fingers traveled to where she'd kissed him and would stay glued to his face for the next several minutes while he thought on what had just occurred. The rest of the world seemed fuzzy, as though he'd been drinking, yet at the same time, things seemed clearer than ever before. It was, it was, it was... Oh, it was wonderful. "You've never danced with me like that before." All the brighteness in the room seemed to drain. Stars, not tonight, please. "'Livia..." "Well, yes, who else. I raised you, Nicolae, don't you think I'd want to be there for your first crush? A shame she has to die, since you didn't follow my orders." Nico glared. "You wouldn't lay a hand on her." The much older woman smiled, shoving him playfully but hard. "You and I both know you could never hurt me. You're too much of a coward." "Maybe so, but I know I'm not a whore; You are. Shoulda figured that a long time ago. Now go away. Doesn't you have work to do?" His new apparent backbone did not seem to impress Allivia. She cackled at him, beginning to back him into a corner. "You really like this girl, don't you, Nico? Defying me, cutting up your arms to go to sick bay and see her? Yes, I heard all about that and I'll admit, this new relationship is starting to really get on my nerves." She grabbed him by his tunic, pulling him in close enough to feel her breath on his face. "I'll make sure she suffers, Kimby. She'll wish the Raveness was working on her and it'll be weeks before I finally let her die. I hope you liked that little kiss she gave you, because it's the last time you'll ever see her again!" Nico flinched, bracing to be hit. And Allivia smiled. "Oh, good boy. Good boy, Nicolae. You know exactly what you're supposed to do. And you know, it's not all bad. I'm a better kisser anyway." She locked lips with him. Nicolae squirmed. No, he thought, desperate. His stomach churned, but something had changed in him since the last time she'd pushed him around like this. Hardly thinking, he stomped on her foot hard with the heel of his boot. She released him immediately to cry out and the moment she did, he shoved her into a cart of food. Nico didn't even look back to see the crash, but he heard it as he ran back to where Ivian was sitting. When he got to his post (almost having lost his hat in his flight) he was panting slightly and Allivia's lipstick was smeared on his face.

    The king's attendant ran a hair through his brown locks. "Shoot, miss, you're just gonna be makin' me blush all night, aren't ya? You's a good friend."

    "Well. I usually drink to numb my soul achin', but that doesn't really 'appen 'round you, miss."

    "Oh, right!" He laughed. "Sorry. I usually get completely wasted at balls like these..." Nico blushed. Maybe I shoulda said 'at.

    He nodded. "Oh. 'at's... unfortunate." The music stopped shortly thereafter and Nico bowed, taking Wendy's hand to kiss it. "Was a lovely dance, mi'lady."

    "Mmm hmm. I just think it's sweet 'e noticed 'ere's a difference between you an' other girls what try an' spend time 'round me."

    "Oh, you're not in any sort of trouble, miss. Iv'an just pays more attention to his staff 'an you'd think."

    "Yeah." He chuckled awkwardly. "Iv'an an' I are pretty close. After my father died, he took me in."

    Wendy twirled again and Nico pulled her in close. "You know," he said, "the king thinks we're some sort of couple."

    "Yes 'am," he said with a nod.

    "No, no, 'at be stooping to her level, miss. She's got all the guards in her pockets already, she has."

    "'at's be'er. Just dunno how I'd go about doin' 'at."

    Nico's face fell. "You remind me of my old b- Childhood friend, Fischer. 'e was fiery 'ike you is. Joined the militia when we was young. Me though, I could never hurt nobody; The thought of it makes me sick, even with 'Livia. Maybe 'at's why I hasn't done nothin' 'bout it yet. 'Cause I'm a coward."

    "Well, it's too late now. I was too scared to back when it first 'appened an' now with my reputation, 'e woulda believe me."

    Maverick sighed. "Look, I... You show up in here. And you are, what, a literal demon? Telling me if I go with you I can claim the throne of my inheritance and ressurect my brother? I mean that's... that's not even possible." "Yeah, I'm really just a toy to 'Livia... I know it seems like I've done nothin' about it the last eight years, I just... I dunno what to do, yeah?"

    “Makes sense. You women are too often objectified. Which really ain’t fair. least I understand what that feels like a little bit. Lots o’ men never do.”

    “Never? Oh, yes, we’ll, I guess if you’re new to the serving staff… I thinks they’re absolutely lovely, aren’t they? I just loves the way they light everything up. An’ all the pretty outfits.”

    Nico grinned too, chuckling to himself. “You’s pretty fun to dance with. I don’t think I’ve ever had this much fun at a ball.”

    Nico stared into her eyes, feeling warmth surge through him. The song they were dancing to was faster than the one the Raven and her general had earlier and Nico got the chance to life Wendy up off her feet.
