  1. Darrin cursed again and shot an arrow while his opponent climbed. The one arrow was enough. Any more would slow him down far more than would be safe. Actually, he realized as he made his way to the ground, maybe any at all was unsafe. This man was ridiculously fast. If I get caught for this, I will never live it down. Not that I'll live for very long...
  2. Nicolae laughed. "I jest, I jest, miss. I know you wouldn't want nothing to do with me that way."
  3. Nicolae blushed furiously. "Aww, that's too much, miss, you're the queen." He smiled humorously. "And you're 'bout to be married, too, be careful who you compliment."
  4. Nicolae let out a sigh. "I don't wanna say it, miss, but I guess I've already alluded to it enough. King Ivian ain't the best king in the world. This court is a pit of vipers, you know, and... Well. Life is rough if you're not noble here. I'mma hopin' you might fare better than I, but from what I seen tonight, our king's not all too thrilled 'bout your prescence. You're foreign, see, and people don't like what's not normal. I don't want you gettin' hurt, my lady, I really don't."
  5. "Callous, miss?" Nicolae raised an eyebrow. "She's the one who knew I'd be workin' this time today. She'd know she have to wait, miss. It might-a be callous if I knew who the girl was, I'm thinkin', but I don't even know that. Doesn't mean I won't be showin' her a good time anyway though. Kinda what I'm known for, see." He paused, staring forward pensively. "Those serving girls have it rough, I think. Needin' a distraction sometimes. And so do I..."
  6. Nicolae shrugged. "She can wait, whoever she is. You come first, miss."
  7. "Oh, no, no, that ain't necessary, miss. Like I told the guard, I'm not plannin' on leavin' 'til the party's over, see. She's prob'ly a serving girl anyway, miss, wouldn't be allowed in the ballroom to begin with." He rocked back and forth on his feet. "She'll probably be sent to my room, I'd a-guess."
  8. "No clue!" Nicolae chuckled. "It don't really matter to me, haha."
  9. The three guards walked down a spiral staircase and eventually came to a little room. "This'll do, I suppose," said Arvis. He gently pushed Arabella into the room and, giving her a grim smile, shut the door behind her, locking it. Nicolae bowed, smiling with flushed cheeks. "Why thank ya, miss."
  10. "Oh, she scares us all, kiddo." "Rian, don't talk to the girl, that don't do nothing but making you feel bat when the Raveness does away with her." Arvis intervened. "You shut up, both of you." They obeyed and continued walking in silence. "Yeah, true enough, I'm supposin'." Nicolae trailed off and looked around awkwardly. For some reason, he felt embarrassed about the queen knowing he was an incurable flirt. "I hope you don't think, miss, that I'm just a-bein' nice to ya because I've got a thing for the ladies," he said quickly. "You're my queen, miss, I do my duty, yes I do."
  11. One of the guards - a shorter one, the youngest of the three - poked Arabella's shoulder. "You're a quiet one, ain't 'cha? What do you think 'bout the Raveness?" Arvis rolled his eyes. "Come now, Rian, don't scare her even more." "I ain't, I ain't, I ain't, I just wanna know what the girl thinks! She's the one it concerns, ain't she?" Nicolae paused, blushing. "Oh, no one, nothin'." He ran a hand through his hair. "The girls at court, see, they're all over me, I tells ya. But, ah... if I didn't know better, lady, I'd say you sound jealous."
  12. Nicolae cocked his head in confusion. "I don't have no sister, sir." He chuckled. "They're a-comin' up with good excuses to see me now, ain't they? Let her in, that's fine with me. I'll be free soon as this ball's done. Say, why we all locked down, do ya know?" ----- Arvis and the others walked down the hallway. "Now that was unexpected," one of the other guards mumbled. "I would'na thought the Raveness had a bit o' heart in her at all." The third guard scoffed. "You didn't fall for that, did you? That witch has got no mercy. Probably just buttering the girl up to her, is all. She'll chop her up and use her for potions, she will!" Arvis rolled his eyes. "It's not good to speak ill of our superior," he said. He looked down sympathetically at Arabella. The Raveness wouldn't really hurt her, would she? He'd rather believe she wouldn't. "Oh, c'mon now, Arvis, you know 'bout the Raven well as I do. She's not even a woman, no she ain't, she's a demon!"
  13. Darrin's smile widened into a grin. Someone he returned his quips? He loved that! "Oh, I never come quietly, good sir," he said. "I must admit though, castle walls aren't a great place to duel. I'd be happy to do so on the ground." Darrin, too, jumped to a different window ledge. It was a long drop, but he made it just fine.
  14. "Well." Riva smiled. "Nice to meet you, dear. I'll be asking you more questions later. This guard is going to find you a room." "The dungeon, miss?" Arvis asked. Riva stood up straight. "No, of course not. She's a child. Find her a room in the servants' quarters. Just lock the door." "Oh." Arvis blushed, then saluted. "As you command, Lady Raven." As the guards moved to leave the room, Riva leaned towards Caden. "You'd better not be letting them out and not me," she said. @The Ward's Guard
  15. With a sigh, Riva leaned down so she was on the child's level. "I asked you a question, child. It's not very wise to deny me an answer. Speak up, please."
  16. Arvis and his companions returned through the window they'd gone out of. The Raveness, however, was talking to the general; neither of those individuals were ones that the trio of guards were eager to converse with. Still, the (oddly quiet) child slung over Arvis's shoulder was drawing stares. With a sigh, he took her off her shoulder and pulled her arms behind her back, letting her walk with him. He and his companions strode up to the Raveness. "Um... Lady, Raven?" "What?" The Raveness turned around, arms folded distastefully. "We weren't able to catch the one who threw it, miss - she escaped into the woods - but we did get her companion." She raised an eyebrow at the girl. "A child?" "Yes, miss." The Raveness scoffed. "I've never tortured a child before... What's your name, little one?"
  17. "Especially?" She grinned, chuckling darkly. "It's natural to fear me, darling, I promise. But I am no threat to our king, we both know that. What happened to get us all locked down? Someone try to assassinate Ivian, did they? I notice he's not here right now. And... oh. Oh dear. This happened on your watch? The king will be rather angry, indeed, I would think... But maybe if you let me through, I'll slip in a good word for you."
