  1. This game can be played in a lot of ways. For instance, 16 is 2^(2^2), e.g., two exponentiated three times. What I'm looking for is the simplest relationship between these numbers that can be combined in a way compatible with what we know of the Cosmere. 16*16*4 just seems too complicated, when we have the simpler 2^10 available.

Does Brandon ever do anything in the most simple way? ;)

Also, since he has said 16 is an extremely important number I thought that would be the way to go. And to get really nitpicky(because that is what I do :P ) it would be 16(16*4).

  2. I, personally, am certain that 1024 is actually the very special combination of two meaningful numbers in the cosmere. E.g., I think it is special because it is 2^10.

This still leaves me with the question though: which years were they using to measure it in? If the planet moved in orbit, the length of the year should have changed. Was it the original years that did or, or the new years? And regardless of which "year" it was, why is the length of the year significant, shard-power-wise? On Earth, the length of the year is not a clean multiple of anything other time unit we use; it is essentially irrational.

Brandon has already stated that 16 is a big number in the cosmere... 1024 is 16*64. 64 is 16*4. And honstly... I think that would be more important than any powers of 2. Just my two(extremely corroded) cents.

  3. You bring up an interesting point. I feel like they couldn't possibly have worked together based on their Shards' intents, but these oddities are very confusing.

Honestly, I think the first three Mistborn books proves that extremely disparate shards can work together.... Maybe not for long, but they can do it.

  4. Well, I went through and modified the Elantris & Warbreaker pages. Still need to add summaries of the books, and descriptions of the magical systems... I wanted to check with everyone and see if we think this is a good starting layout for individual book pages(series would have to be done slightly differently)... Let me know what you all think?

  5. I never questioned whether palindromes were considered holy. I was just saying that it seems likely that the ardents changed all of the names of people who were supposed to be holy so that they'd be palindromes.

Well, Brandon's discussion of it was that certain things(gods, moons, etc.) were all palindromes but regular people would try and name their children things that are *very* close to palindromes... without actually being one so as not to rise above themselves. For example, Shallan is almost a palindrome, only one letter off('sh' is a single letter in their language).

In the same way, I know that ten is a holy number as well, but I don't know if it's holy because there are ten heralds and ten orders of radiants, etc (the ardents again) or if there are ten orders of radiants and ten heralds because ten is a holy number. I'd be more inclined to believe the first, myself.

I'm betting on the first myself... but I'm also guessing this is a case of RAFO to get it confirmed... or someone ask Brandon at one of the Q&As.

Note: If this is addressed in the Q & A link, I apologize for bringing it up. I'm leaving and don't have time to listen to it right now. I'll catch it later.

Some of it is, but some is also strictly guessing on my part.

  6. I don't think there is a distance thing with Mistborn. The only reason that Elantrians are weakened by distance is because the Aons are directly tied to the land. The Dakhor monks don't seem to have any different powers in Arelon compared to Teod, where they would probably be weaker.

In mistborn, Vin goes all the way from Terris to Luthadel, and she doesn't seem to notice any difference in her power as she moves from place to place.

At the Chicago Q&A the question was asked about how the various powers from the different planets would react away from the planet... and the answer was pretty much RAFO... but there are hints embedded in the various books.

  7. Well yeah. That's kind of the point of this conversation. What will Sazed refer to himself as, though? Or will he just say, "I'm Ruin and Preservation."

We're not necessarily talking about right now. This is on a long term basis. After all, we get some Mistborn books set quite a ways ahead....

I honestly think he would come up with a new name for himself. The combination of Ruin & Preservation... to tear down/destroy and to protect at the same time? I'm not even sure if there is a word for that... also... would containing two Shards protect Sazed from the loss of self that other Shard holders experience? Would the "battle" between the very natures of the two Shards he holds keep his sense of self intact?

  8. My great journey to see Brandon Sanderson started at about 1:00 in the afternoon... I arrived at the signing at about 2:00 and then met up with some fellow 17th Sharders (Shivertongue and his friends) and we hung out at the mall across the street from the Borders where the signing would occur. We got back to the Borders at about 5:30 or so and acquired our wristbands to assure our places in line. From there we commandeered an entire row of seats(not the front row... but we should have) and sat around talking with fellow fans of Brandon for the next hour and 45 minutes or so.

I got to explain the fixing of Elantris to someone. That was fun.

Brandon was late. From what I can tell this is pretty normal for him. The employees at the store said he hit traffic... I think he just didn't want to leave the restaurant where he had dinner because their food is quite awesome.

Brandon then did a reading from The Way of Kings in which he read the prelude. He also explained that the prelude is really a second prologue... and that the book doesn't really start until chapter 2. Also, it is entirely my fault that the reading did not get recorded. The mic I was using to record was a powered mic which I of course forgot to turn on until about halfway through the reading. Way to go me!

Then the Q&A portion of the night happened. I recorded all of this. The audio is available  here...

Listed below are all the questions asked during the Q&A session. They are a little hard to hear on the recording so I wrote all of them down and you can follow along while listening.

I thought it was kind of funny, like centuries they'd all been fighting together and then all of the sudden coincidentally they all decided, I mean well not decided, but something inside them all broke. Was it because they were bound together in some way? Was it coincidence?

When will the next Wheel of Time book come out?

All of your books run on the same cosmology, essentially that all the different planets exist in the same universe. Is there a shot that, considering the size of the Stormlight Archive, is there a chance that we're going to be seeing Surgebinders vs. Allomancers?

That having been said, you have also said that you might maybe write a trilogy of trilogies of the Mistborn series. And you said that last series might be a sci-fi-ish kind of spin on it, how would the different magic systems work off planet and would they interact at that point?

    At the end of

  9. I'm also noticing some with 5 at the moment.

    5 sub-types of fabrials.

5 ideals for each order of the Knights Radiant (if I remember correctly... don't feel like going back through the book to find where I read that)

Also, to add to the list of threes, three main types of Fabrials(Altering, Pairing, Warning)

  10. First reaction after having just finished it.... It was great. And now I'm angry because I don't get more Stormlight Archive for a while. Why couldn't he have all 10 books already written? :)

Anyways, need some time to process it. Was definitely good. Also need to think of some good questions for Brandon for Thursday. Actually probably going to let it sit for a day or two while I finish "Elminster Must Die" then go back and do a second reading before the signing...

  11. .

    sorry... had to do it.

Hi, my name is Pooka and I'm a Brandon Sanderson addict.

<< waits for everyone to say "hi pooka">>

Loved everything since I picked up Elantris because of the cover. See... sometimes you can judge a book by it's cover... because it was awesome. Picked up everything he's done since then as soon as it hit the shelves. Got to meet him at the Gathering Storm signing and he was an incredible guy. I think when I see him next week I'll bring him a present.

Anyways... I'm about halfway through The Way of Kings now and I'm loving it. So far it is a pretty awesome start to an epic fantasy series.

  12. Yeah... Warbreaker is one of my favs. I read it when it was only available on the website. Bought it when it came out.... but forgot it when I went to his Gathering Storm signing.... so I bought another copy. Now I'll take my other copy to get signed at TWoK signing.

Forced my brother to read it as well... and by forced I mean I walked up to him and said "read this. now." He loved it. He's now a huge Brandon fan. Loves his magic systems and writing.

  13. Doomhammer. Orc Warlock.

And... the Cataclysm beta is pretty fun so far. Still way too glitchy to get a good read on how it is going to be but it is very interesting. It's fun seeing the changes to all the old world areas and the goblin and worgen starting zones are pretty sweet.
