Dilaf's wife and the spell that went wrong
Oudeis replied to Crabtree's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
As Observer says, it's unlikely he'd be "unaware of" the thing men died in order to painfully warp his bones and grant him the power. That said... I could see something happening. He gives in and goes to save his wife, but when he sees the magic actually happening, right in front of him, he panics and changes his mind, deciding it's better she die than be saved by heathen gods, so he fights back with his hidden anti-Aon magic and this results. We have very little insight into what actually happened at that moment. -

Basically, this. As someone pointed out in the previous thread, the "interface" seems to be spontaneously generating electromagnetic signals (or, as we think of it, visible light) so that the outside world looks neither dark, nor shifted either red or blue. So one theory is that the interface would actually spontaneously generate the deadman's signal every three seconds inside the bubble, even though that means the bomb will receive more signals than the transceiver ever sent. Like I said. Handwavium makes your head hurt. I still maintain that unless we posit there's actually an intelligence operating the interface, there must be some quirk to the phenomenon that can be used to trip the bomb.

World misconceptions that are difficult to shift.

I know almost all Scadrian nobles have dark hair and I'm pretty sure Shan is described as much. But she's golden blond in my head. And if you shone a light directly in Vasher's face, his eyes would still be in shadows. They generate their own shadows. It's a thing. Look it up on wikipedia. -
We got into a long discussion on this subject once. In short, the discussion gets muddied because of the handwavium cadmium requires just to function. If a bomber is aware that pulsers exist, it should in theory be easy to design a bomb with one of any number of possible switches so that if it goes out of time/phase with something else, it simply detonates then and there. The question then becomes, is the handwavium enough to "trick" the electronics of the bomb into thinking it's still in phase? It would require a sophisticated enough interface that the time bubble would have to almost consciously be trying to adapt to the bomb, but frankly, just for the physics to work as well as they do, there's that much handwavium being used. I still maintain that unless there truly is an intelligence adapting to technology, it would not be terribly difficult for a bomb maker to study the phenomenon enough and come up with some mechanism that will instantly trigger in the presence of a time bubble. However, I could be wrong.

I thought that was the fear of lonliness? What would that have to do with external physical allomancy?

It could be the last one to leave? Maybe if a bunch of them work together to break down the wall, they're all "in its mind", perhaps fighting for control while their metal reserves last, but then if the rest drop out and one guy is left, he's in control. This is just speculation. To answer your question from before, no WoB that I know of addresses this.

World misconceptions that are difficult to shift.

In my head, Sadeas is bald as a cue ball. He's always described as overweight with a very red face and the first two times I read through the book, this was matched in my head with a perfectly bald scalp. Then the third time I read it, one of the first times we see Sadeas, his hair is described as long, flowing raven locks tumbling around his shoulders. I kept my eye out and not one more thing is said about his hair, or lack thereof, in either of the books from that point on. It's not just that I see him as bald but he's got hair. I see him as bald and he has ALL THE HAIR. -

There is a medium-sized local convention to DC. I have contacted the people there and suggested they try to get Mr. Sanderson to attend in future years. I figure they're more likely to invite if more people also say this to them. Their contact page is here or their email is [email protected]. Yes, this is wholly selfish on my part, but if you're local or can get to DC for a fun weekend, help me out! Also every convention anywhere should invite him to things. So support that cause.

I personally call non-powered individuals in the Cosmere "Lerasium Mistings" cuz I don't like the word "muggle".

For a Mistborn RPG once I had an Obligator accountant who was a late Snapper into a Thug. There was some slight utility in staying awake and alert a bit longer than his peers, but is that really an advantage? "You have the amazing superpower, so we're gonna give you all the REALLY long and boring assignments and force you not to sleep!" ...Yay? In theory, if he ever is attacked he'll have the advantage, but even in the Final Empire with thieves, that's a relatively low concern for someone in his job. A Coinshot with poor vision. Difficulty aiming her own projectiles, and if she tried to steeljump she'd prolly land maladroitly when she has trouble judging how far away the ground is or what the footing will be like, and possibly vertigo through the jump itself with difficulty seeing her surroundings and they're suddenly far away and going by quickly. A germophobe with tin? Bit of a stretch. Actually, now I wonder if there are specific metallic maladaptions. Could there be a "cross-eyed" Seeker who is simply incapable of determining where a bronzepulse comes from? A tineye whose hearing just doesn't enhance? A Lurcher who hallucinates phantom Ironlines?

Concur, though I remember that Mr. Sanderson's explanation was grammatically very confusing. I thought he was saying, Kal's bond to Syl means he can use Stormlight to heal the damage of a Shardblade, i.e. when he healed his arm. Szeth's... whatever sort of connection he's got to his Honorblade cannot heal from Shardwounds, i.e. his neck was sliced and he couldn't heal. Like I said, his phrasing was very confusing and I hadn't assumed as much from the text before his explanation, but I believe this is what he meant. I personally had just assumed that it was the fatality of the blow. If Szeth had cut straight through Kal's neck, surely Kal would have died faster than the Stormlight could have healed him, but apparently not. Also, apparently if one single Shardbearer had managed to cut Szeth's hand, he might have been without the use of that hand (unless he could remove the whole limb and heal back the whole thing. Has anyone asked that question yet?)

I had been taking something on faith, but it only just occurred to me to wonder. Do all Shardblades kill the same way? That we know of, there are three distinct "types" of Shardblades. An Honorblade, a living Sprenblade, a dead Sprenblade, and we're told that Nightblood is also a type of Shardblade. Do they all kill the same way? Leaving Nightblood aside for a moment, the victims of Honorblades and both types of Sprenblades seem to perish in similar manners. I've just been assuming that they all died the same way. Do they? If anyone is going to do a re-read anytime soon and wouldn't mind, please keep an eye out for specific descriptions of the victims of different types of Blades; any noticeable differences would be much appreciated. I will check myself next time I epic re-read but I just read the novels recently and that prolly won't be for a while. Nightblood. Many of his kills are with his scabbard on, and mimic mundane attacks with obvious supernatural empowerment. But what about the one time he is drawn? The other types of Blades phase through mortal flesh without leaving a mark, severing the soul and turn limbs grey with a non-fatal stroke, and burning the eyes to black smoke on a fatal one. Nightblood... does not seem to have a non-fatal setting. Any touch of the blade seems to reduce the target, be it human or anything else, entirely into black smoke all in one go. Is this simply an incredibly overpowered extension of a normal Blade's deathblow? If someone strong enough to not be killed instantly by Nightblood were to be wounded, would her limbs turn grey? And, of course, other Blades cut through solid matter like air. Nightblood turns matter into smoke. Again, difficult to compare. I would be fascinated to discover and dissect any differences in the ways the various weapons harm people and things.

Discrepancy in the Epigraphs from Mistborn (HOA spoilers)
Oudeis replied to gjustice99's topic in Mistborn
Sorry, I meant to say that I was talking specifically about the epigraphs of the second book, not the first or the third. So we all agree that the epigraphs of the second book are exactly what Alendi put on that steel plate, unaltered by Ruin? Which is not to say that Ruin hadn't been altering them for thousands of years in order to manipulate prophecy, so even Alendi's writings aren't sacrosanct. The Piercings of the Hero, for example, were likely altered long, long ago because it doesn't take Alendi's specific circumstances for Ruin to realize that whoever the Hero is, it's best he be a hemalurgist. -
Discrepancy in the Epigraphs from Mistborn (HOA spoilers)
Oudeis replied to gjustice99's topic in Mistborn
First, the epigraphs are un-Ruined copies, yes? That we know of, they disagree with the in-text Prophecies at several times, and each time the epigraph is the true Prophecy while in-text was Ruined. We don't know that for sure, but I think it's enough that we can't really dismiss this as, "well obviously that was just Ruined." Cuz if that's the case, then we have not a single word we can actually trust. Second, as has been pointed out, Sazed was tremendously discordant. The purpose of the Synod was peace. Total and utter peace. Just sit there and wait, forever if need be, and see if things get better on their own. Sazed waded in, stirred up trouble, and thanks to his efforts saved the world. He was Discord, and they loved him for it, because sometimes peace is just another word for surrender. -
Sorry, I was trying to make one point and forgot this other one. I thought we were all on the same page with the ethnicity restriction. I suppose the more complete sentence I meant was, "Anyone Arelish could have done AonDor if they had the training, long ago before the Shaod came to be."
-
Four senses always on high, no apparent power source, driven to violence. Daredevil's not a tineye. He's a hemalurgic creation. Tin spikes have granted him a permanent bonus to four of his senses. The Flaw compels him to violence. Those aren't horns on his mask, there's the nubs of spikes.

I agree with you that there weren't Elantrians before Elantris. I also base it on my gut. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't even a Shaod before Elantris. I suspect it was like Forgery or Dhakor or ChayShan, that just anyone can do it if they have the training, but it's comparatively weak. Someone in ancient Arelon, before it was Arelon, made the decision to amplify the power by concentrating it; Elantris was made to strip away the power from "everyone" and concentrate it in a few, giving them not only super-powered AonDor, but a concentrated burst of Dor that healed, and allowed for the creation of Aons without needing a medium. Of course, something happened to this entire society. Did they all die off? Did they communally transcend physical form and become one with the Dor? Did they lock themselves out of the kingdom and forget the keys? Only the Magic 8-Ball knows for sure...

I cannot recall now where I read it, I'll search the annotations cuz that's where it always turns out to be, but I'm sure I read somewhere that they're called "clips" because you'd take a copper bar and "clip" coins off of it one by one...

Let me clarify that "tactile" refers to your sense of touch. I'm asking specifically for things pertaining to touch, not any of the other four common senses.
