  1. Ax kept at it until he fell asleep again.
  2. Tena stood up and opened the door. "Hello, more people. I don't recall texting you."
  3. Ax smiled and started scratching Jace's head like he would a dog's.
  4. Tena immediately sat down on the couch and tried to relax.
  5. "Aye aye, sir," Ax said, smiling and ruffling Jace's hair.
  6. "TUBAists I invited over for a meeting," she said, holding out Solstice. "Can you hold her for me?"
  7. "Um, giving me a kiss?" Ax asked nervously.
  8. "I don't know, because I wouldn't be around to see," Ax said.
  9. Ax smiled like an idiot. "Yup, that's what I'm here for."
  10. "Yeah," Ax said. "I'm sorry about that. But I know you can get better if you believe in yourself... which sounded really cheesy..." He grimaced. "Um, sorry again?" He smiled.
  11. "Yeah," Ax said. "You can stop. It's what the Oaths are about."
  12. "Your spren? Yeah... I think denial is common with these kinds of things. Spren are generally pretty forgiving, so you can make it up to them by paying them attention. What does yours look like?" He smiled at Jace, trying to be comforting.
  13. "Yeah, I don't really know anything about it," she said, shrugging and smiling. "And I think I have to get back to my shift." She waved at the new arrival, then jogged back to where her partner was standing and looking profoundly bored.
  14. "Um, if you wanted to learn that sort of thing, our teachers could tutor you..." the soldier said. "And if you want a simple job, you can be a farmer's helper, or a teacher's helper, I guess. Depends on if you like kids."
  15. "Yeah, we call them oaths," Ax said. "The first is the same for all the types of Radiants: 'Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination'. All of the orders have different Ideals after that, and the Ideals even among orders vary a bit from person to person. If you're a Lightweaver, then each of your order will have very different Ideals with the same idea behind them, though the Lightweavers call Ideals Truths."
  16. "Well, we have teacher positions open, you could be a farmer's worker, you could be a soldier... work in a shop... We have a lot of options." She smiled.
  17. "Well, if you're going to be here, you'll need a job," she said.
  18. Ax nodded. "Okay." He let go of Jace and slowly got out of bed, walking over to the stack of books on his desk and getting one out, Return of the King. He walked back to the bed and turned on the nightstand lamp after giving Jace the book.
