It's definitely meant to be symbolic rather than a literal title. They mention alloys throughout the book specifically as a symbol for things that aren't always black or white and certain but some blend of the two. I at least interpret it as saying that the law isn't as uniform as it would seem. Plus, only metals and metaloids can form alloys,and mistborn is all about metals, so the title fits.

I just saw this forum on Sanderson's website and thought I'd try it out. Looks pretty awesome =D

A friend recommended Wheel of time back in 2009, and it sounded interesting, but I never actually went for it. Then, my mother actually bought the eye of the world for my brother (he was scared by the size and never actually read it) and I remembered my friends recommendation and tried it out. Frankly, I devoured the whole WoT that year and essentially had my socks rocked off by how good the gathering storm was. At the time, I hadn't really realized that Sanderson had any other books, but my aunt recommended Mistborn to me, and that was when my fandom began. I devoured nearly all of his books, (I just started warbreaker) and The Way of Kings just made it to the coveted position of my favorite book of all time. (It helps that I'm a student at BYU and so should be able to get his class sometime =D)
