how will perfect gems affect soulcasters?
CMac716 replied to Kalaksbreath's topic in Stormlight Archive
I just figured removing the cohesion would return it to it's original structure, tension would actually force it into the perfect form instead. I also wonder if it would be possible to just soften it, shape it instead of cutting it, then solidify it... -
No problem.

how will perfect gems affect soulcasters?
CMac716 replied to Kalaksbreath's topic in Stormlight Archive
So, I was reading some other posts regarding the different types of surges, and came up with a much simpler solution from my understanding of cohesion and tension. Cohesion allows a person to break down the weak bonds and essentially melt an object, that's what caused the ground to become liquid like and Kal to sink in. Tension allows one to make it rigid, to realign the molecules into a stronger crystalline structure. This is what then caused the ground to become solid and Kal's feet to be stuck. So, unless you're unable to use any surges on gems directly, couldn't you use the first to break the bonds and tension to realign them perfectly? I know it's not possible to soulcast gemstones, but not sure if they resist surges completely.... Just more idle thoughts. Lol -
Where did the Listeners live in the previous generation?
CMac716 replied to CMac716's topic in Stormlight Archive
So, have my book in front of me now. "The storms are too strong on this side of the city. " "Storms? Nonsense. No storms here." Mother paused. "I wonder where we'll be taking your sister for her transformation." So it sounds way more like a matter of them not happening there at all, not a matter of when. Also, her mother thought she was talking to Venli about Eshonai, so that's my mistake there -
OrangeJedi Could a Parshendi form a bond with an intoxicationspren? Brandon Sanderson Theoretically possible, yes. OrangeJedi Would it look ugly? Brandon Sanderson It may not be the best idea they ever had.

Where did the Listeners live in the previous generation?

I guess that makes sense, I always just assumed that they could sense when they were coming because of their connection to Roshar. -
Currently re-reading WoR and just got to the conversation between Eshonai and her mom. Her mom (while suffering from alzheimers apparently) wonders about where they're gonna get a Highstorm for Venli's first transformation because they dont happen where she thinks they are. So where did her generation live? Everything I've read implies that the highstorms cover all of Roshar in varying strengths....

“My research into the Unmade has convinced me that these things were not simply "spirits of the void" or "nine shadows who moved in the night." They were each a specific kind of spren, endowed with vast powers. ” —Hessi's Mythica, page 3 “It will not take a careful reader to ascertain that I have only mention eight of the Unmade here. Lore is confident there were nine, an unholy number, asymmetrical and often associated with the enemy. ” —Hessi's Mythica, page 266 “I am certain there are nine Unmade. There are many legends and names I could have misinterpreted, conflating two Unmade into one. In the next section, I will discuss my theories on this. ” —Hessi's Mythica, page 266

Undmades there definitely 9. XS-Terrain Also, does each of the Unmade have a corresponding order of the Knights Radiant? Brandon Sanderson Eh... Kind of. XS-Terrain Ok. So there are nine Unmade right, so which one is left out? Brandon Sanderson Bondsmith. But it's not as one to one, there's some fuzziness in there. We dont know the number of Dawnshards though, just that one is different from the rest. :/

My main issue is that you keep going back to passion, odium is 100% confirmed to be "divine hatred," not "passion." It's been a bit since I read OB (about a quarter of the way through WoR atm) so I don't recall exactly what kind of Voidspren Yixli is, but i dont feel passion is what Odium would be attracted to. That being said, Kaladin has shown to have plenty of hatred for those that harm the ones he cares about, so he could still easily attract one from that alone. Hating those that do dishonorable things... maybe that could lead to him ascending to both shards eventually?

https://www.alexandrite.net/chapters/chapter7/synthetic-gemstone-growth-techniques.html This article was insightful. My idea doesn't seem very plausible after skimming through it. I like the idea of using fabrials to replicate the natural Rosharan gemhearts though -
how will perfect gems affect soulcasters?
CMac716 replied to Kalaksbreath's topic in Stormlight Archive
I agree that completely artificial gemstones would have their own problems, but I'm referring to basically melting down existing gemstones and reforming them as one. I'm sure it would require insane heats but possibly doable given magic. lol Also, white collar was fantastic -

So if all gems are already perfect chemically, that should theoretically make it a lot easier for them to artificially create new perfect gems. Using lightweaving they could super heat it with lasers (iirc Brandon said they can create them) then using lashings to increase the weight of something on them to forge larger gems of that variety. To keep from causing chips and micro cracks the could use a living spren blade in the form of jewelry cutting tools. This is all theoretical and I think their a ways from this scientifically but maybe in the back 5 books they'll see a need for them and eventually get there. -
It also works with the poem about them binding any being since we're know now they bind with singers I think my major concern with this theory is that 9 seems to be Odium's number, and (iirc) there were 10 Dawnshards.
-
Gotcha, my mistake. I thought voidspren were all from sja-anat, not directly from Odium. I guess that means potentially there were voidspren on Ashyn while Odium was there, but if that's the case, they I dont think they would be considered unmade but they could potentially have been the Dawnshards. If you buy into the theory that it requires a shards own investiture to kill it, that explains why Honor implied humans need them to defeat Odium. It would also explain why they were taken away from/lost to humans since the Shards switched beings apparently. Edit: by switched beings I meant the sentient species they backed
-
Sounds reasonable, but are voidspren trapped on braise or do the corrupted spren lose their connectiong to odium between desolations and revert back to normal spren. Odium doesn't seem to be able to affect Roshar much before a Herald breaks From what I recall it's the Fused that get trapped there and they're cognitive shadows, not voidspren.

how will perfect gems affect soulcasters?
CMac716 replied to Kalaksbreath's topic in Stormlight Archive
My question is more about what constitutes a "perfect gem" since by definition they require impurities to be different types of gems (from what I've read, no knowledge of geology personally). Iirc, Brandon has said that the color is more important than type since they're structurally similar. Does that mean a perfect sapphire is simply the exact shade or does it mean no cracks, or a combination of both? And if the color is so important, would a KR get more efficient use from using the gem that corresponds to their order? I've been away from the forums a long time but I haven't found much discussion about the gems -
I've seen a lot of theories about the Dawnshards being spren that were then turned into Unmade, but that would mean they originated on Ashyn since the Dawnshards were part of the planet's destruction... so either Spren were on Ashyn or the Unmade didn't come from the Dawnshards. Just idle speculation I suppose

This makes a great deal of sense to me. Couldn't think of any evolutionary advantages to the different eyes but that makes definitely works. Just out of curiosity, do we know where the Irali come from? The whole Oneness thing seems like it the shattering of Ad so are they Yolen?
-
I guess it makes sense they could have evolved over the 4500 minimum years, I just thought it was odd they eye so different than everyone else. Thought it might have been another case of incorrect histories that we've seen
-
So, we're led to believe that the Ashyn refugees are the ones that conquered Roshar. My big problem with this is that the humans populating the rest of the planet look nothing like the Shin. Is it possibly a mix up and it was the other human refugees that actually did this? (Irali I think it was) or has evolution simply made the rest look way different?
