Long Game 49/Anonymous Game 3: Window to the Past
Opal Lion replied to little wilson's topic in Sanderson Elimination
It was at times like this when Jezrien fully understood why he left investigations to Nale. Aesudan had lied to them all, and Jezrien had never once doubted her. At least he hadn't acceded to her request to have the Heralds protect her instead of Amaram. Blightwind free was a terrible thing, but the power of the Unmade within a mortal body was far worse. Bereft of a host, Yelig-Nar could be entrapped again. Jezrien would not let this incident morph into a full Desolation, not while Taln still held out. Does anyone know why Amaram wasn't attacked? Specifically @SE_Ialai_Sadeas who supposedly led the attack, and @SE_Meridas_Amaram, who shows no signs of surprise from not being attacked.- 1062 replies

There is a two vote minimum, so neither you nor Venli can be ostracised this cycle without additional votes. Jezrien stumbled towards the center of the room, his movements more uncoordinated than they had ever been under the influence of alcohol. Honour's power purged alcohol from his body, but that same power couldn't cleanse his mind of similarly toxic thoughts. "I would, would like to announce that @SE_Meridas_Amaram has greyshushly agreed to be attack-ed and protected this cycle." Relieved at having delivered his message, Jezrien collapsed on the floor.- 1062 replies

Long Game 49/Anonymous Game 3: Window to the Past

Jezrien continued to deteriorate rapidly. All these years to recover and heal, and he was even more fragile than he'd been when he sentenced a friend and colleague to perpetual torment. He had shattered more than one oath that day. The Words of his adopted order didn't care that sacrificing one man safeguarded the lives of all other humans and singers. The Words saw only that he had placed expediency over honour, and the repercussions followed him across millennia. Without alcohol to dull his madness, he was rendered incapable of performing the simplest of actions requiring thought. Jezrien was too far gone for wine to restore him to blissful insanity, now only two instincts warred for dominance. The first urged him to give up and accept that he had lost, the second demanded him to stand up and shield the Heralds in a way he hadn't been able to in Damnation. Dazed, Jezrien lacked the strength to resist either impulse. He would help the Heralds, yes, but he would no longer avoid death. Perhaps he could find peace by embracing his old burden.- 1062 replies

Only one of the other Heralds actually showed up last cycle, and even that one was unable to participate in the mass protect due to IRL reasons. I cancelled the plans two hours before rollover because of the lack of activity meant we could not ensure our target's protection, and because the Heralds with relevant win conditions wouldn't have completed them. @SE_Wit and I were the ones to roleblock you, as Wit had to roleblock someone, though I do not know why he specifically chose you. I also do not know whether Wit knew of the plan to attack you. Beggar could barely remember the last time he'd spent so much time awake without consuming any alcohol. Suppressed memories were bubbling up to the surface of his mind, as was the crippling madness that pushed him to drinking in the first place. Beggar, Jezrien, didn't know how much longer he could last without wine. Every sound echoed with the memory of ten simultaneous screams. The smell of meat entered his nostrils as sizzling flesh as it sloughed off his body. And when he closed his eyes, he saw only flame. Jezrien would help the Heralds. He owed them that. Just another few hours, and then he could rest.- 1062 replies

How the Heralds had fallen in the last four and a half thousand years. Beggar supposed the guests had reason to act as they did; it had been millennia since nine of the Heralds had helped humanity in any meaningful way. Not yet useless perhaps, but protecting individuals from attack was trivial compared to ensuring the continued survival of Roshar's human population. The one Beggar had abandoned warded off more harm with his mere existence than Beggar could ever hope to prevent here in Alethkar. He had to try, though. He had betrayed one Herald long ago, but here, now, he had a chance to make up for that, at least a little bit.- 1062 replies

The announcement had served its purpose it seemed, for the guests took notice of it despite the news of the Shin's death. The message provoked its share of confusion as well, no doubt a function of having only one contributor socially allowed to write. Beggar regretted relinquishing his anonymity, but he couldn't let ignorance lead to the death of innocents. This is essentially the same plan as the time Gavilar attacked me and Kelek roleblocked him. I thought we were done with that, but then it turns out that @SE_Kelek has to save two people from dying. Another Herald has to participate in an action with all the other Heralds, so we're cooperating for a collective protection action. As all the Heralds are participating in the action, and Kelek specifically has to save people from death, we would need volunteers to attack someone in order to meet Kelek's win condition. Anything other than that is a bonus, though people with win conditions requiring them to cooperate, attack, or defend are welcome to provide additional assistance. We don't even technically need a volunteer willing to be the target, as we can always nominate one of our own, but signing up to be the target is a low-risk method to receive items and favors without having to use up an action.- 1062 replies

I specifically asked Gavilar to attack me because I knew he had a win condition requiring him to lead an action with three other people, and would thus likely be willing and able to pull off a 100% successful attack. Gavilar would not have attacked me, or anyone else, if I hadn't requested his help. I'm would also put extremely low odds on Darkness being the killer, as he was ostracised at the time. As far as I can tell, all ostracised players needed to work together to target non-ostracised players with PMs, so killing someone would probably be impossible.- 1062 replies

While all the Heralds would be be tied up protecting you this cycle if you agree to volunteer, I have been authorized to offer two infused broams and/or a cooperative action next cycle, especially a redirect if you still have that win condition. Other Heralds may make additional offers.- 1062 replies

To clarify, I was claiming to have gambled last turn. I would assume that item spying goes before item passing, but I have yet to receive confirmation of that. We probably can't do full item spying even if all twenty of us decided to help. With three people required for guaranteed success and not everyone having the item spying ability, we could probably only scan at most five people. Having action scans from those who can't item spy should help, but we still don't have a great chance of catching the killer.- 1062 replies

Long Game 49/Anonymous Game 3: Window to the Past

The king was dead, and Beggar had been unable to save him. Beggar had sworn to prevent this very thing from happening, yet he had failed. Why? How could he have been so negligent in his duty? Beggar felt like the Almighty was mocking him; less than an hour after proclaiming that gambling was not blasphemous, Gavilar had died. What had Beggar been doing while Alethkar's ruler lay dying in a pool of his own blood? Playing breakneck in a back room of the palace, naively thinking it would help him avert further bloodshed. If only he had been ostracised so he could hide his shame from the world. Sadly, he was still here, with nothing left to fill the gap abandoned by wine except the desire to learn who had murdered the king. If so, and I presume it would as certain items can't be allowed to disappear from the game, the person who currently possesses the black sphere should be the murderer. Item scan has a 40% base chance of success with each item rolled for separately, so unless item passing goes before item scanning, two or three people with that ability should be able to target someone this turn and determine whether or not they were the murderer.- 1062 replies

Long Game 49/Anonymous Game 3: Window to the Past

I ca confirm that Wit did indeed roleblock Amaram, an action with a greater than 100% chance of success. There's always gambling. 15% chance of success + whatever bonuses you may have if you submit the action more than twelve hours before the cycle ends. Beggar sighed inwardly. Millennia of safety from outside threats had not dulled the Alethi's desire to solve problems with violence. Every death had been preventable. Thaidakar, Torol, Restares, Renarin, none of them had needed to die. The Vorins had taken the idea of not seeing the future too far. All conscious beings planned for the future; only supernatural methods of viewing upcoming events were suspect. Gambling may not be the best method of solving problems, but it was better than murder, and far from blasphemous.- 1062 replies

Beggar had survived. That had been the expected result, and he was glad to have been given the extra time to drink wine and enjoy the party. The continued deaths ate away at him though. Restares's killer had confessed, and didn't seem the type to continue going around murdering people. Beggar couldn't help but notice though that all the recent deaths had been allies of King Gavilar. His daughter, his highprince, his nephew, his whatever Restares was. Beggar wasn't quite sure why the man had possessed the king's favor, but now he was dead with the others. Perhaps the murderers would go after Gavilar himself next. Some part of Beggar, the piece of him that could never quite be overwhelmed with wine, knew he couldn't let that happen.- 1062 replies

Regarding Nale, he has claimed to have had a non-murderous win condition involving action spying the turn Jasnah was attacked. He later claimed that he forgot to take an action that turn. I can confirm that I volunteered to be attacked by Gavilar this turn. Protection has been arranged, but if anyone has a protection based win condition they're welcome to help. The servant never came back with the wine Beggar had ordered. Unfortunate, but not unexpected. A man of his appearance and demeanour could not be expected to work for one such as the late Sadeas. He would have to be content with the one bottle he did have. Retrieving it from his cloak, Beggar took a sip of the sapphire liquid. He was not unduly afraid of the imminent attempt on his life. He had challenged Death repeatedly over the years, and lost on more than one occasion. This would just be one more time he made himself the target of violence so that others could be kept safe. If he did fall though, he wanted to do so with the familiar taste of wine on his lips and the reassuring flow of alcohol through his veins. He would drink the bottle of sapphire slowly, making it last as long as possible. If he survived, his search for wine would resume.- 1062 replies

Beggar had been wrong, as he usually was in cases like this. Investigations had never been Beggar's strong suit; he preferred situations with obvious solutions, such as an openly hostile enemy or an unopened bottle of wine. His current dilemma involved trading a bottle of sapphire wine for a greater amount of alcohol. The brief burst of sanity he'd experienced upon seeing Sadeas's lifeless body had evaporated, leaving behind his usual drunken self. He walked up to a passing servant who was carrying several glasses of wine and ordered a bottle of orange wine. Seeing the servant's hesitant expression, Beggar added that the wine was to be used to toast Sadeas's life. The servant hurried away, whether to retrieve the wine or merely to get away from the disheveled drunkard Beggar didn't know.- 1062 replies

Beggar stared at Sadeas's corpse. Such a thing should not have happened, especially not at a celebratory feast for a peace treaty. The guests were here to eat, drink, and converse with their new allies, not to brutally murder each other. Even when he was drunk, so inundated with alcohol that he couldn't move, Beggar felt each and every death as a personal failing. Now, he was more sober than he had been all night, and the sting of failure consumed him. He should have been there. He should have been able to protect them. It was too late to save Thaidakar and Sadeas, but catching the murderer(s) could help save everyone else. He had never been as good at this as his old friend and colleague, but he had to try. 4. Meridas Amaram (Charcoal Hyena) 5. Restares (Chartreuse Penguin) 6. Tearim (Coral Swan) 9. Jasnah Kholin (Fuchsia Ostrich) 10. Ivory (Indigo Weasel) 11. Elhokar Kholin (Ivory Dragonfly) 12. Aesudan Kholin (Magenta Albatross) 14. Renarin Kholin (Melon Dingo) 15. Wit (Mint Heron) 18. Ash (Oxblood Beagle) 20. Kelek (Plum Rhinoceros) 21. Eshonai (Quartz Zebra) 23. Klade (Sage Kangaroo) 25. Szeth Sapphire Elephant) Here's the player list, minus those who are dead, ostracised, inactive, or have been vouched for in thread. I sincerely doubt that Ialai helped murder her husband, so she's out. None of the remaining players would appear to have any particular reason to kill Sadeas, especially as the Kholins are still allied with Sadeas at this point in time, but if anyone knows of a motive they should share.- 1062 replies

Long Game 49/Anonymous Game 3: Window to the Past
Opal Lion replied to little wilson's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Without money, the best way to get wine was to trade for it with other types of wine. Unfortunately, Beggar had no more wine, unless one counted the stains on his cloak. This was not too great of a problem, for as a beggar, he had mastered the art of acquiring wine for free without resorting to theft. In this occasion, he could just take a bottle of wine from the feast table, which he did. Walking away in an attempt to flee the scene before anyone noticed he was there, he wondered who would trade the most for what appeared to be a bottle of pure sapphire. None of the lighteyes at the feast would give him anything good, and the guests at the Beggar's Feast wouldn't have anything he couldn't get for himself. Perhaps a servant would be willing and able to make a fruitful trade. Beggar shoved the sapphire bottle into a pocket of his cloak and headed towards the east wall, hoping to attract the attention of a fellow possessor of wine.- 1062 replies

I have had a win condition to protect someone from attack. For several turns, I tried to stage on attack against myself, but it never worked because the plan required the help of five or six people at once. As of now, I am no longer looking to get myself attacked. I have also heard that the protection was random, not part of a staged attack. Beggar was feeling better now. His particular condition meant that he would never be able to drown his pain in alcohol, but it did let him ignore many of the physical disadvantages of inebriation. He was able to stand up and walk again, and trekked the familiar path to the Feast Hall. The lighteyes were discussing the identity of the person who dared attack Princess Jasnah, but Beggar's mind had not yet recovered to the point where he could contribute meaningfully to the investigation. A simpler task was at hand; replacing all the bottles of wine he had recently lost.- 1062 replies

Beggar woke up from the porch feeling extremely lightheaded. The makeshift winesack lay empty on the floor besides him. Surely he had not drunk all forty bottles? No, if he had, the evidence would have been scattered on the floor. Instead, all the bottles were gone, presumably taken by other thirsty beggars. He tried to stand up and failed, collapsing back to the floor. He'd certainly managed to drink plenty of wine before passing out. Beggar wondered how much time had passed. It wasn't light outside yet, so hopefully he hadn't missed the entire feast. Grabbing his disheveled cloak, Beggar began to crawl towards the main hall, hoping he'd be able to stand up soon and figure out what had happened during his nap.- 1062 replies

Luckily for Beggar, none of the guards noticed him carrying his sack of wine bottles. He left the main feast hall without incident, and headed towards the Beggar's Porch. Along the way, he decided that he would probably just put the wine back in its original hiding place in the rafters. The eavesdropper was surely long gone by now, and the search concluded. After all that effort to retrieve the wine though, Beggar wasn't about to turn right back around. No, he would enjoy a few bottles of wine first, hopefully share some with anyone he happened to meet at his destination. The wine was heavy, but Beggar was able to carry it without needing to stop and rest. He quickly reached the Beggar's Porch, sat down, and pulled out a random bottle of wine. A red, evidently. Beggar began to drink, ears pricked in case any prospective wine drinkers ventured near.- 1062 replies

Though Beggar strained to hear the sounds of a search party barging into the rafters, he managed to stuff all forty bottles of wine into his cloak without being interrupted by anyone. The cloak was now rather unsuited for wearing, and the weight of the wine would undoubtedly cause the tears to widen, but Beggar was confident the garment could carry the bottles long enough to find a new hiding place. He wasn't quite sure where that would be, so he attempted to prolong his cloak's lifespan by supporting the bottom of the makeshift back with his right hand. He climbed down the stairs and waited by the fake wall for a distraction that would enable him to make his escape. The commotion of Adolin's return provided a perfect opportunity. Beggar pushed open the wall and began to walk calmly out of the feast hall, just a lowly darkeyed beggar and his definitely-not-suspicious-at-all sack of wine.- 1062 replies

Beggar had discovered the hidden passage by accident. Wandering around the main feast hall late at night, he had stumbled into a wall in a drunken stupor. The wall had given under his weight, revealing a set of stairs. With absolutely no regards for his safety, Beggar had climbed up the stairs and discovered the rafters. After that day, Beggar had climbed into the rafters many times during the night, finding the cramped space to be an excellent place to drink wine in peace. It had been months before he had decided to store his wine here, after discovering the perfect storage place. It was this location that Beggar headed towards now. Waiting until nobody was looking, Beggar headed towards the secret passageway. Walking through the fake wall, he climbed the stairs and himself up into the rafter. Beggar looked around for any sign of the eavesdropper. Seeing nobody, he headed towards his secret stash of alcohol. The visibility was poor; very little illumination from the stormlight lanterns reached the rafters. That didn't hinder Beggar unduly, as he'd made this particular trip many times. He'd never been under such a strict time limit though, nor had he needed to move so many bottles of wine. Coming to the loose stone block that hid his supply, Beggar began to shake the stone back and forth in an effort to dislodge it. Finally succeeding, Beggar placed the three stone weight block onto the ground, trying to be as quiet as possible. Dozens of bottles were revealed, far too many to carry by hand. Instead, Beggar took off his cloak and placed it on the floor. Into its folds, Beggar began to place bottles of wine, hoping that they would all fit, and that he would be able to smuggle the cloak out of the rafters.- 1062 replies

It certainly appeared that Liss was going to be ostracized, unable to return to the feast until Hour 6.5 at the earliest. A harsh blow, for sure. Surviving an ostracism attempt the previous hour had not done her any favors. Beggar was more interested in the intruder spotted in the rafters. All his best wine was stored up there, and a dedicated search party could potentially stumble upon it. To Beggar's knowledge, the king's guards had yet to discover how he managed to keep himself supplied with aged wine, and this would be a poor time for them to find out. He would have to ascend to the rafters himself and hide as many bottles of wine as he could in a more secure location. Beggar sighed. Once, this would have been easy. These days, the trip to the rafters was long and tedious, with a constant chance of a severe fall. Climbing was easier when he wasn't drunk, so Beggar slipped his current bottle of wine into the folds of his ragged cloak and started to walk over to the passage that could, if one was not particularly concerned for their safety, lead to delicious, delicious wine..- 1062 replies

An interesting explanation from someone living in a country that hadn't had a king in several hundred years. No mention of what the people could actually do if they didn't trust the king, either. There was a reason Gavilar had needed to use overwhelming force in order to unite the kingdom. Shardbearers and Soulcasters made it nigh impossible for those who had neither to achieve any sort of military victory against an Alethi monarch who refused to back down. The royalty might suffer if the entire nation decided to march on Kholinar, sure, but the capacity to wait out a rebellion so long as the Ardentia didn't decide to take the people's side coupled with the power to send in nearly invincible warriors to assassinate leadership and slaughter rioters made any sort of uprising from the lower classes unfeasible. Gavilar might not be the worst king in history, but the Alethi political system could not be credited for that achievement. Beggar idly wondered if Liss might be from a country with a different style of government, but the majority of his attention was fixated on the chull encroaching upon a table laden with wine. He hurried over to convince the chull to head in a different direction.- 1062 replies
