[OB] Are the moons related to the bondsmiths?
Furry-And-Lovable-Grover replied to turklemuffink's topic in Stormlight Archive
This is a little off topic, but it was inspired by the original topic: Brandon said that Odium, Honor, and Cultivation are the three shards in residence on Roshar. THIS WoB says that all investiture in the Cosmere is related to one shard or another, whether that shard is in residence on that world or not. There is (I think) yet another WoB somewhere that I can't find just now that says that Rayse justifies his attacks other shards in part because he feels like they are violating whatever agreement was reached at the Shattering. Rayse's true motivation may be related to this if such a WoB exists, or he may just be trying to prevent another 'Harmony' Investiture from Honor and Cultivation are evident in the way that the surges on Roshar are manipulated via spren/fabrials etc. Could it be possible that the investiture native to Roshar belonged to none of the three shards in residence, and that Honor and Cultivation's presence and maybe displacement of the native investiture is part of what drew Odium. This could mean that there was only one moon originally, and that the other two were placed later, and that it was left over from the native investiture involved in the Rosharan system, and still allow a place for the moon to represent the sibling, a leftover of that native investiture. -
It totally never occurred to me to compare Dalinar to Moses. I think that's a great parallel. Have an upvote.

I can totally get behind that idea, I would think that he probably bargained for the ability to convert Stormlight into Breaths or something along those lines. Edit for thought completion

He was just an everyday normal guy, obviously. edited for awful formatting and quote

My money is that something happened with Nightblood on Nalthis resulting in a decision by some parties to destroy him. Vasher, because NB is kinda his kid with Shashara, couldn't let that happen, and jumped to Roshar and gave NB to Cultivation/Nightwatcher to keep safe.

So one of the things that you're pointing out here, whether or not Kaladin was sorry for hurting/killing Syl was actually addressed in WoR. Brandon went out of his way to point out how haunted he was by Syl's scream, and the loss of Syl actually drove him into major depression, coupled with the weeping and his injury. He spent time grieving and blaming himself for contradicting his oaths. I don't think that we can really feasibly say that Kaladin doesn't care about Syl. Additionally, many people are getting caught up on the physical aspect of a romantic relationship. As a married person with three kids, I can certainly say that I think that is an important aspect of a romantic relationship. But that doesn't mean that it has to be dependent on that. There are many couples where one partner is physically incapable of performing, and there's a thriving and happy marriage. My wife and I actually met and spoke for months over the internet and decided that we were exclusive, long before we ever met face to face. As many obstacles as there are to the Syladin ship, none of them so far is a deal breaker.

[OB] Adolin's breaking
Furry-And-Lovable-Grover replied to PrincessMorpheus's topic in Stormlight Archive
You're doing some handwaving here that I think glosses over a very important fact. Dalinar was insisting on Adolin taking the throne. Dalinar depended on Adolin, because that's the kind of person that Adoin is, and that Dalinar expected him to be. Dalinar wasn't going to take 'No' for an answer. No sponge passing as you put it. Adolin kept trying not to take it. Might even have characteristically have wanted it if he didn't have to face the moral consequences of Sadeas' murder. For Dalinar, the ethical and political backlash of putting his son, the murderer of his nemesis on the Alethi Throne robs Dalinar of any legitimacy. Dalinar only let Adolin off the hook because of the problems that his confession brings up. In fact, if we want to talk about Adolin not standing up to his father, this is a perfect example of him doing exactly that. I'm certainly willing to agree that I think Adolin falls a little flat in this book, but I can't imagine that with everything going on that Adolin is going to be truly free of consequence either. It would certainly be a path that would allow Adolin to have a stint as a major POV character in SA4 or another book. -
[OB] Kaladin's love life ?
Furry-And-Lovable-Grover replied to Stromblessed's topic in Stormlight Archive
So just want to point out that another thing that Brandon said "would take a lot" is reviving a dead shardblade... And looking at the brief discussion on age, we have heard from the BS blog that years on Roshar are 500 days, so if you were factoring ages to earth years, you need to look at your math again. -
The thing I think a lot of people are overlooking, especially on the surface is that Kaladin isn't responsible for Syl's sapience. He's resposible for bringing her sapience to her manifestation in the physical realm. There are several places where spren talk about how traumatic is is to move from the Cognitive to the Physical realm. And the fact that many spren (Honorspren included) exist and live sapiently in the Cognitive realm completely negates the idea that a relationship between the two would be inappropriate based on the idea of any sort of codependency. Syl and Kaladin have made conscious decisions to work together. The Nahel bond can't form unless a spren agrees to accept a partner, and in that respect I think that it's entirely possible that there could be a romantic relationship between the two, even one that lacks eroticism. Chapter 7, where Syl wears a havah, and asks Kaladin what he thinks about it, certainly has Kaladin thinking a little wistfully/bemusedly. I think the Syladin ship has got plenty of miles left in it. edits for spelling

[OB] What truths must Hoid speak?
Furry-And-Lovable-Grover replied to MonsterMetroid's topic in Stormlight Archive
There's definitely an author-y reason that we get to see the KR growing to accept their oaths, in that it shows the development of the characters. That being said Szeth basically walked all the way up to the 4th Oath, with little to no effort, within a month or two of being accepted into the order of Skybreakers. This was largely due to the fact that Szeth was already very self aware. Granted, not all oaths/orders are about achieving self-awareness like Lightweavers, but each character defining oath requires some self awareness like that regardless of order. For example, Kaladin knows what the 4th Oath is, but can't bring himself to swear it yet. Direct evidence of self awareness. Continuing with Szeth as my example of a very self aware Radiant, there are loopholes in every oath. Hoid would be uniquely qualified to leave himself a lot of latitude for action, but I don't forsee him actually trying to abuse a set of oaths to a being that would be more than willing to work towards his goals anyway.- 60 replies

[OB] Fourth Windrunner Ideal
Furry-And-Lovable-Grover replied to IntentAwesome's topic in Stormlight Archive
Looking at this particular piece after considering the conversation Kaladin has with the Honorspren captain, It seems to me that the oath would have something to do with accepting that a mission or a cause can be more important than a single person. I lack the words to put this in the terms of the ideal itself -
[OB] Lift's Curse - Nightmares
Furry-And-Lovable-Grover replied to Llarimar's topic in Stormlight Archive
We actually do have a relative timeline that shows that Lift went to the NW after Dalinar did. Dalinar wen't five and a half years ago, Lift in the WoK says that she's "been ten for three years now." That means that Cultivation's words to Dalinar does not rule out Cultivation directly blessing Lift, especially given what the Stormfather says about her.- 17 replies

Gluttonous Lurker
Furry-And-Lovable-Grover replied to Furry-And-Lovable-Grover's topic in Introduce Yourself!
I would have to say that right now it's probably Shallan, but it tends to fluctuate. I really liked both Siri and Lightsong. My favorites I think tend to run pretty close to SA simply becuase that was my first exposure to the cosmere. Syl is consistently up there too. Cookies are also on the list of things that I love, so thanks for the cookie! -
I started reading Brandon with WoK when it first came out. I was hooked, and then a friend told me about the Cosmere, and now I'm essentially drowning in the topic. It probably is something that I spend at least a third of my free (and not so free) time thinking about. I love books, reading, computers, and my family. See y'all around the Cosmere.
