What would you do with a bead of Lerasium?
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to The Gecko's topic in Mistborn
It's a toss-up whether I'd burn it myself or sell it for millions/billions. Maybe I'd cut the lerasium nugget in half, burn one half to see if it works (and probably pick up the power level of a "standard" non-lerasium Mistborn), and sell the remaining half to the highest bidder. The only thing better than being a Mistborn is being a Mistborn who's richer than God to boot. -
I mean, while we're posting theories... I've been dividing them in four groups of four like the Allomantic metals. It's probably not valid, since we have a WoB that not all Shards have an opposite, but it is, I think, a good start: RED= Moral (relationships between others): Honor, Endowment?, Ambition, [UNKNOWN] BLUE= Spiritual (identity and authority): Dominion, Autonomy, [UNKNOWN], [UNKNOWN] GREEN= Physical (creation/natural processes): Preservation, Cultivation, Ruin, [UNKNOWN] PURPLE= Mental (emotions and mental qualities): Devotion, Odium, [UNKNOWN], [UNKNOWN] The best part is that if you make this into a 4-quadrant grid, you get a political compass meme.
-
With that in mind, I wonder what would have happened if the reportedly kind and generous Ati had picked up Odium instead of Ruin? How would he have dealt with being the vessel for "God's own divine hatred, separate from the virtues that gave it context?"
-
Actually, I think the Dakhor are significantly aligned to Devotion as well. After all, they seem to be a group of monks whose fanaticism (aka DEVOTION) to Jaddeth lead them to think nothing of sacrificing themselves for the benefit of Dilaf. After all, 50 of them had to die for Dilaf to gain his Dor-resistance. Though to be fair, this could be seen as an expression of not the monks' Devotion but Dilaf's Dominion over them. In which case it gets a lot fuzzier. Possibly a symptom of how Aona and Skai's Investiture was put through a Shardic blender? I do largely agree with your point about Jealousy as a potential Shard, though.
-
I disagree that jealousy and envy are the same thing when we're talking about gods. We use them interchangeably when talking about people, but when we're dealing with omnipotent beings, the similarities break down. Envy is the desire for something that belongs to someone else. But if you're a God, the creator of the universe, there's a strong argument that everything is, in a sense, yours. You created it, after all. You can't envy something that's already yours; it's in direct contradiction with the definition. I don't think there's anything inherently malevolent about Dominion, either. It's just an archaism for "authority over another person, place, or group." It can be abused, but no more so than any other attribute. Certainly it's less inherently violent or destructive than the sort of universal entropy of Ruin. Maybe it only seems inherently malevolent to us modern readers because we live in a time and culture so far removed from throne-and-altar style absolute monarchies. To us, anything less than a partnership between two perfect equals makes us uneasy. But historically the understanding of the term "dominion" has been much more neutral.

I don't see why there would be a shard of Envy. Remember that the Shards are pieces of Adonalsium, the most powerful entity possible in the Cosmere. What would an entity like that possibly be envious of?

[MB] Noble Houses most likely to have Mistborn
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Dustbringer Lord's question in Cosmere Q&A
Spoiler: Well of Ascension -
Well, I think you're onto something when you point out that malatium's effect is just A-Gold, but externalized onto other people. Until we read about another atium alloy in future books or a WoB we don't know enough to establish a pattern. But it does seem like the pattern would be internal metal/atium alloys would externalize the metal's effect. Atium's effects are External/Mental/Temporal; we know this based on how they manifest. So it makes sense that an atium alloy imparts some of those qualities onto the base metal. But then what would an external metal/atium ally do? "Temporalize" the effect? Make it mental somehow? As for Mistings being able to burn any godmetal alloys of their metal: I think this might be a stretch. The only godmetal we know works this way is lerasium, but every human is already a lerasium Misting anyway, so being able to burn a lerasium alloy means literally nothing.
-
Now that's really interesting. Though presumably the other Investiture would have to be "inside" the A-Aluminum savant (Gnat King?) in some fashion. If only there were some way to project Aluminum's power in a bubble. Unless... Guys, what if we've just stumbled upon the Allomantic properties of an aluminum/atium alloy!? Think about it. Malatium is a gold/atium alloy that is basically gold, but external rather than internal. An aluminum/atium alloy with the above Allomantic power would fit the pattern.

Do Soulcasted Materials Have Extra Investiture?
Unlicensed Hemalurgist posted a question in Cosmere Q&A
When a Radiant or Fabrial-user Soulcasts a material into another material, does any of the Investiture used to initiate the change "linger" in the new material? Is the material itself now slightly more invested than before, or does all that Investiture get used up in the transformation? -
Iron Allomacy and Vampirism?
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Unlicensed Hemalurgist's question in Cosmere Q&A
Yeah, I think if something like this was possible, you'd need a lot of blood for it to work. -
Kinda morbid thought: if a Lurcher or Mistborn were to bite someone and swallow their blood, would the trace amounts of iron in that blood be enough for them to burn for Allomancy?

Awakening and Synthetic Fabrics

Is there any reason to believe it would be harder for an Awakener to use synthetic dyes vs. natural ones as fuel? -
Awakening and Synthetic Fabrics
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Unlicensed Hemalurgist's topic in Warbreaker
I thought the reason Lifeless were so much more practical in modern Nalthis than they were centuries ago was because preservation practices like ichor-alcohol had increased the length of time the Lifeless could stay functional. It was a function of "materials science" (for lack of a better term), not new Commands or a new technique. Could be wrong, though-- it's been a while since I read Warbreaker. -
It suddenly occurred to me that once the people of Nalthis discover how to make synthetic fabrics like nylon and polyester, Awakening may become significantly harder. We know that Breath has a hard time Awakening materials like metal and stone that have never been alive. Most of the Awakened objects we see in Warbreaker (aside from Nightblood obviously) are either Lifeless or pieces of fabric. Now, that may be an obvious solution in a medieval/early-modern society, but as Nalthian technology advances to the point where synthetic fibers become commonplace, Awakening becomes a lot less practical. Has anyone else had similar thoughts?

How could there be a Platonic Form of a negative concept like Nonexistence? I mean, it would have to be the utter pinnacle of non-existence, such that every other type of non-being in our world is but a shadow of its complete, perfect nothingness. So wouldn't it just... not exist? Am I missing the point here?

Origin of your username
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Tesh's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Because Hemalurgy is my favorite magic system in the Cosmere and because the idea of it being a licensed profession is darkly humorous. -
We know that Hemalurgy works by "grafting" a piece of the victim's Spiritweb onto the recipient, giving them the new attribute or ability. But are Hemalurgically granted powers inheritable? Let's say someone is spiked with a single Allomantic ability, then produces offspring. Would those offspring have a better chance of being Mistings?
-
How would you spike the "wolfiness" out of a wolf, anyway? F-Aluminum stores Identity, so maybe Hemalurgic Aluminum could steal the wolf's "Identity-as-Wolf" and graft it onto the recipient? You could argue that it might just work with the "basic" metals (spiking a wolf with iron and stealing its strength, etc), but I have a hunch that animal Spiritwebs are so different from that of humans or sentient beings in general that I think you'd need a special spike for it.

THEORY: "Trell" is Cultivation
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Unlicensed Hemalurgist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm pretty sure that the Era 2 entity calling itself "Trell" is just hijacking the trappings of a pre-Lord Ruler religion to further its (her?) own purposes. There's no evidence that the historical Trell ever existed.- 39 replies

THEORY: "Trell" is Cultivation
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Unlicensed Hemalurgist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That depends on whether the "giant blanket" part was literal or just a metaphor to help Wax understand what Harmony was on about, which I think is a matter of interpretation.- 39 replies

THEORY: "Trell" is Cultivation
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Unlicensed Hemalurgist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If there's even a 1% chance that an entity of Harmony's power-level could pose a threat to the other Shards, I think that's something they would plan for. Especially someone as forward-thinking as Cultivation. Harmony as a weed that will take over the garden.- 39 replies

THEORY: "Trell" is Cultivation
Unlicensed Hemalurgist replied to Unlicensed Hemalurgist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's pretty close to my own theory. I interpreted that as meaning that a Lerasium spike would be really good at stealing Allomantic powers, but why on earth would you put that spike in and damage your soul like a dingus when you could just eat it and become a super-Mistborn? Total waste of metal. I assumed that was a way of saying that godmetals, being "all on the same frequency," would cause some sort of interference that affected Harmony's ability. But two trellium spikes seem to cancel out that effect, which... I dunno. No idea about the red haze either. Well, Sazed is a cool guy, but he is still technically the single most powerful entity in the Cosmere by raw power. Keeping him busy in his own little corner away form everything else would seem to be in the interests of pretty much any Shard.- 39 replies
