personally I'd rather not see him come back permenenly. more like being revived if there is an emergency and losing his body afterwards. More like the role iron-eyes had in alloy. though maybe more involved in the story.

when you compare the two all that we've seen that windrunners can do is heal themselves, increase the physical capabilties and do lashings. while soulcasters could create food in famine, turn attackers to smoke [probably destroy etire armies with a large enough gem], heal people [if they are skilled in organics. even jasnah was able to heal shallans poisoning, and she sucks at that stuff]. so are there abilities of windrunners that we haven't seen. or is the price for soulcasting higher than jasnah indicates.

How to defend against shard plate, shard blades, wind runners, ect.

completely agree. -

I don't see why he has to use the spear to parry or block attacks. He could use lashings to fly above szeth and attack him from above. . That said i do agree that szeth has a bigger chance of winning. But that doesn mean kal doesnt have a chance. -

Personally I think kaladin on his own would have a decent chance of stopping szeth. szeth doesnt have plate, they both have windrunner abilities and they are both unaturally skilled at fighting. The only advantage szeth has is his blade. wuch wiukd only work if it cut kaladin. though I guess his greater experience might give him a greater advantage. note that I'm not saying that kaladin will beath szeth on his own, just that he has a chance. the probability of szeth beating is probably higher, but he still has a chance. -
1.eddard was not in charge of the wall. jeor mormont was. 2. the disappearences only started happing after eddard left 3. he dies at the end of the first book. so you wouldnt have ti deal with his stupidity after that. - i can agree with that -he isnt in charge of the wall, and again, it only became serious after he left. - that is what he did. renly asked him to support a coup and use joffrey as a pupped, petyr said he'd support stark and betrayed him. and doing it publicly would have started a civil war any way [i'm sure that tywin would have loved to ignore the slander of having his grandchildren be called abominations]. that said if you prefer mary sue geniuses I would still suggest you not read only. the characters in the series are as close to human as possible and do make mistakes. and anyway most of the mistakes that happened in the war were robbs, and he doesnt even get any pov chapters. it was robb, not eddard who let theon go to his father, after ignoring his advisors, it was robb who decided to knock up some random gir, it was robb who decided to go south in the first place. not to mention the fact that ot wasnt edddards stupidy that got him killed. if it wasnt for joffrey, he WOULD be at the wall helping out. even cersei the mad could see that it would be better to send eddard to the wall.

There are a few things wrong in this. I understand it if you don't like the books but disliking them becuase of wrong info is a bit... theon is a hostage. eddards job was supposed to keep him away from his family. It was robb who sent theon away to theons father. not eddard. I agree that he is an idiot when it comes to politics. but that doesnt mean he has to be an idiot when it comes to battle strategy does it? this isnt true either. while eddards stupidity caused robb to rebel, there would still have been a war. if eddard used joffrey as a puppet stannis would have attacked. if eddard joined stannis he would have to fight the lannisters. the reason for all of the deaths was the fact that the kinngs children were illigitimite. it was not eddards fault that he was unable to stop the war. but his death wasn't the cause, just the catilist.

Does the Cosmere Universe open up for a sci-fi setting?
master replied to oGGe's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I wonder if they'd have access to allomancy [and the other two arts] if sazed [and the mists] are back back home while the alomancer is on another planet? -
even if there armies are out of the way they could still meet the invaders halfway. whts I don't understand is why they didn't conquer alethkar when they were separate princedoms. Thats not how I understood it. farming wouldnt be very difficult if plants could move out of the way of storms. and its probably even easier without any plowing nessesary. in one of kalidins first few chapters he describes planting as spreading sap [for nutrients] with seeds mixed in. Also the deworming seems to be very easy, jsut time consuming. or in other words, protection houses from storms would be harder than protecting crops from storms. vorin culture says that if you kill a shardholder you get his shard or they give it to you willingly. If he asked I doubt they would have given them up and I think that the plan was to unite alethkar, not conquer and slaughter the ruling class. or even a small fraction of the ruling class. \ first, they probably get the food from soulcasting and the gems to power the soulcasts from chasmfiends. secondly: good point.

I did a basic search but nothing came up. my question is if atium geodes will reform somewhere. Since there weren't any mistborn in alloy I guess atium wasn't needed. but if there are any mistborn in the next series will they have access to atium?
-
to me it seems that it would be more suited to cults than government agencies. but I guess thats more a question of personal style. I guess that whoever may [or may not] be trying to breed new mistborn would be sick enough to use the spikes, so I guess we'll see. its too interesting not to use again if you have six books worth of space.
-
if it was rediscovered it would probably be banned by most major religions, not to mention the fact that adherents to those religeons would probably call users the equivent to the medieaval "witch" and burn em at the stake [or drown them, or stone them, etc. etc.]. Not that breeding programs would be much better. thye best solution would probably be arranged marriages. that said, what happened in alloy suggests that a breeding program might be put in place.
-
I guess it would depend on how much they are expecting it, their ability at igmoring \their emotions, and a hundred other factors. but I guess against aan inexperienced opponent it could work.
-
I assume that shifting the balance would change the overall purpose. if the purpose of a ruin, preservation combo is keeping the balance between them, adding devotion to the mix would probably forge a new purpose.
-
I'm not really sure how metallic inheritance differs from normal genetics but from what I understand the more blood you have of the of the pure blooded users [ie the original mistborn, not the ones who were diluted over time by skaa blood] the greater the chance of getting the abilities. While I doubt sazed would allow the creation of more mistborn I think a decent breeding program would work. which is probably how allow would relate to the second trilogy [iee it would set the scene for new mistborn]. if you took all of those with allomantic powers and culled those who didn't develop allomancy from the breeding program, eventually you'd isolate the allomancy. once it is isolated the blood should be pure enough to get a few misborn. you'd than have to breed the mistborn with each other to try and purify that bloodline. now, if you di the same thing with the ferrings to get the full set of ferro abilties than bred the mistborn with the feruchemancer, you may be able to get a combo of full abilities. They may not be very strong on both sides, but compounding should work to booste the strength of the ferro abilities. not sure about the allomancy though. if it is possible to booste allomancy someone with a full set of both arts would probably be unstopable. a superpowered bendalloy bubble to reduce the time needed to store age [if the changed world has access to atium, healing, etc. would probably be more effective than the lord ruler having to spend a large part of his time weak and frail. etc. etc.
-
sazed does have a lot of devotion in him. devotion doesnt seem antagonistic to preservation. But I wonder what effect it would have on ruin. It would definately destroy the harmony aspect. I wonder if the combo would allow sazed to interfere a lot more directly by preserving those he cares about and ruining threats to them [puns intended].
-
personally I don't think the shards would neutralise in a way that doesnt change the personality of the holder. to me it seems that each combination of shards would require a different personality to deal with. a combo of preservation and ruin would require a personality that supports the balance of creation and destruction. it would see life and death as natural processsess and not seek to interfere directly unless that balance was upset. a combination of honour and ruin would probably require a personality that deals out destruction in a structured way. maybe making challenges to give victems a chance to escape. so maybe two sacrifices would be forced to fight to the death, but the winner would be alive. assuming that the personality of the holder does influence the shard a bit I guess that some things could happen. the closer the personality of the holder is to the shard [or combination of shards], the more control they'd have over it. the reason behind this is that the more different they are the more changes are required, and if the personalities are completely different than there'd be nothing left of the original personality; while if they are similar, less changes would be needed and the original personalities are more or less intact. A completely changed personality would be completely based off of the shard, while a partially changed personallity will still have some aspects of humanity. an example would be that while harmony is supposed to be neutral. sazed still is a kind and caring person and is able to interfere while keeping the balance. If sazed originally was an unstable psychopath who only cared about destruction, when he got the shards his personality would have had to have been changed completely to stop him using the balance between preservation and ruin to only cause destruction. if sazed was originally inclined to keep the balance then his personality would only need to be changed in small parts and some of the original personality would be left, and as long as that personality wasn't too diferent to the shards' intent it would be able to interfere. I assume this is why ruin only cared about the destruction of the world while odium seems to have more control over his plans. ruin seemed to be more like a computer program, able to calculate plans, but unable to do anything else but what he is programmed to do. Preservation seemed to have a lot more personality. he supported the balance between preservtion and ruin be throwing them into sazed. with this theory ti suggests that preservations original personality would have believed that the best way to limit the destruction would be a balance, while ruins original kind and caring personality would have been completely destroyed by ruin. if the letter is right that would mean that odiums original personality was similar to the shards and would make him much more dangerous.
-
but being complete opposites, it seems likely to me that harmony would have its own separate personality in tune with keeping the shards balanced. not killing someone [ruin] without healing another [preservation], etc. and thats why sazed doesnt get directly involved [rather using agents like ironeyes or wax], to preserve the balance of the shards.
-
ts been a while since I've read hero, but I wonder if preservation picked sazed becuase the balance of the two shards would be best suited to his personality?
-
I'm using the idea that a user of one whole magic system is called a mistborn [even if its just for allomancy its still a pattern that could be used] while a user of a partial [ie one metal instead of the full sixteen] magic system is called a misting. so a user of two whole magic systems would be a twinborn , while a user of two partial magic systems would be a twinning.
-
I dislike the idea of doubles being twinborns. they should be twinnings. A true twinborn would be something like the lord ruler. using that terminology as a basis for going off topic [the thread is called twinborn combos, so not really off topic] a true twimborn ability mix could be something like a compounded zinc + compounded tin for a super sherlock holmes. compounded steel + pewter to survive super speed collisions.

think about it. how many authors are original. that said I'd disagree with your statement about rothfus, his excecution is interesting. not as original as sanderson ussually is, but still interesting.
