  1. I mean "bad guy" always depends on which side you're standing on, and I think Erikson does a good job portraying that with people like Karsa, the Edur, Draconus, and Kallor. Even Anaster is humanized, to a point. Really the only character that sucks pretty much all the time is the Errant, and even he started much more benign than he ended. So obnoxious. Also, he is Plus Korbolo Dom, and Mallick Rel are pretty terrible.
  2. @Yvainnie Lol, most of that information actually comes from the main book series. I assumed if you were talking Holds you had read the parts of where it's discussed, forgive me if I erred. FoD and FoL don't get quite address everything you learn in Malazan itself; gotta wait for the last book.
  3. In addition to all this correct information, according to the mythos of Forge of Darkness and Fall of Light, Kurald Galain was/is more like a separate world in and of itself, older than both Emorlan and Liosan, that was abandoned by the Tiste Andii after Mother Dark flew the coop. The Tiste "came to the realm of the K'chain Che'malle" (the primary Malazan world), some lead by Silchas Ruin and Scabandari, and others by Anomander... I think? Some of that history escapes me. Its status as both Hold of Darkness and a Warren kind of came to be during that mess. If I'm not remembering something right, please correct me.
  4. Summerfest in Milwaukee had a tiny home art installation to raise funds/awareness for veteran homelessness. You could come in and draw on the walls, so I left a little something...
  5. Silchas had a brother that was black, but he got adopted before I found them, so it's just Silchas Ruin and my ten year old kitty, Bobo. Update: Silchas is very anti-bath time. His swords are indeed sharp. And @AngelEy3, what about the Dhenrabi?
  6. Meet the newest member of my household, Silchas Ruin:
  7. And finished TCG last night. I forgot how nearly all the bigwigs ended up in the same place, and which people actually died, lol. That's a wrap for my second read through! On to Night Angel book 3.
  8. That would make the relationship between Shadowthrone and Ardata an interesting one, to say nothing of the mule, lol. It would also be an interesting perspective on how Shadowthrone and Cotillion planned for Icarium's role in the whole mess. Pust did try pretty hard to feed him to an Azath. I'm trying to remember... I feel like they interacted at some point. I could be wrong, and that doesn't presuppose your theory.
  9. If you look verrry closely the speech bubble says "gosh I love arrows". And I guess it does say female on my profile, not that I think most people look at them?
  10. I only just got NA book three from the library, so you should have my thoughts about the whole thing once I get there, lol. Lightbringer is just, I don't know, more engaging, for me? I don't mind brutality when it's used effectively, and really I just don't like the narrator for the books. I often find small things that irritate me and cast a pall over the whole experience, like how the author of Lycanius would always say someone "inclined their head". I honestly was going to start a tally. BUT, that said, I thoroughly enjoyed them. Just not as much as LB. I'm with @Briar King and looking forward to Night Angel Mark II. I think it's gonna be awesome. And @Ammanas, I'm a her. I suppose there is nothing that indicates that so just wanted to clarify. Carry on!
  11. @AngelEy3 I'm trying to finish my re-read so I can get in on the Wheel of Time. My sister has been rereading it and I've got the urge, and DoD is reading a bit more quickly than TtH did.
  12. Tar tweaking out and giving Pores lip while they're on the barges might be the best part of Dust of Dreams.
  13. @Ammanas Lightbringer is the reason I picked up Night Angel! I LOVED Lightbringer, which has made the mediocrity of this series all the more disappointing. Paul Boehmer is an awful narrator whose voice reminds me of the true facts guy.
  14. Man, I love these books way too much. In the middle of the Night Angel trilogy and all I can think is "ugh Malazan is so much better than this". Definitely postponing finishing it until after Dust of Dreams.
  15. I think you're correct, but also that that is only the current state of the Shake.
  16. The number of things and people and events I've forgotten is ridiculous. And now that I've got Karkhanus and the ICE books rattling around in my head there are all these contradictions so I can't trust my own mind at all, really.
  17. Toll the Hounds spoilers:
  18. I get the feeling that Toll the Hounds is kind of the Winter's Heart of Malazan, what with the interesting but ultimately not very significant wanderings of the plot that would definitely be excluded from a film or television adaptation. I, too, was ultimately really surprised and disappointed with the conclusion of the Dying God's story. It really just seemed like a tool to develop Anomander's spawn, Kallor, and Spinok. The whole book is just remarkably depressing and dark. Murillio, Gruntle, Mappo, Travellor, Cutter... so much angst. BUT, armed with my new knowledge of all things Tiste, K'rul, and Kurald Galain, it's all much more interesting... and even sadder.
  19. Toll the Hounds is SO MUCH BETTER having just finished what's been written of Karkhanus. Like, I know who these random Tiste are and am much less confused by the goings on with Nemander and company.
  20. Some authors are more interesting than others. Joe Abercrombie on Twitter, for example, is awesome. R. Scott Bakker, however, I want to punch in his pretentious face.
  21. Erikson replied to a comment I made on one of his Facebook posts. He was disagreeing with me, but I feel special.
  22. I just jumped back in on Toll the Hounds. I forgot how much of this was in Darujhistan. Looking forward to Barathol and Gruntle, not so much Cutter's angst fest.
  23. Just finished Fall of Light. For all my expectation that it would be a bit of a slog, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The first two books are frustrating and devastating, but moreso in the story they tell than in the telling. Anyone who's on the fence about reading it, I recommend giving it a go. Looking forward to Walk in Shadow, though admittedly not as much as Toblakai.
  24. "More tea, and less angst." Quotable quotes from Gothos.
  25. My love for Korabb is unending. I can't believe I left him off my list! @Briar King I have a love/hate relationship with the Farseer saga. It's fascinating, but so full of angst. I had a hard time liking any of the characters, but the final trilogy is, IMO, the finest of the set.
