A Memory of Light: Hopes and Expectations

While reading another unrelated post here, I would also like to know if the Tinkers actually find the song. -
I'm looking for something to read...
Aethling replied to Brendan's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Your page length requirement fits in the YA genre pretty snuggly, but even lots of those are 5-600 pages in hardcover. I usually don't read stand alone books all that much unless I really like the author. If you don't mind a series or two, Riordan's first 5 Percy Jackson books tend to cap out around 400 pages. You could probably read them in one extended session each. Mull's Fablehaven books are really quick reads, but perhaps outside of your page limit requirement. You can buy versions of Sullivan's Riyria Revelations that have multiple books in each volume. I think each original book is less than 300 pages. It is probably possible for you to read any of the individual books in the Elenium or Tamuli in an extended session. I know for a fact that you can read Goodkind's The Law of Nines in a few hours, but you would be greatly benefited by reading his epic series first. Have you ever read Dante? A good translation of the Divine Comedy is a quick, easy read. -
Well, Hoid was already hopping around before Mistborn, so I doubt that Sazed had anything to do with the creation of the 17 shard. Now, the part about the third member being from an unpublished book is interesting. I had forgotten that. Let's see. Alloy was unpublished at the time that SLA was released. Still, I doubt that one of the characters from there has made it into SLA2 simply because of how Alloy came into being, unless I am seriously misunderstanding how Alloy came about.
-
Until we know more about HOW they worldhop, there is really no way to tell. The idea is an interesting one, though. We know brandon has said that Hoid has only gone forward in time. Considering he was there at the very beginning, all of the books so far would be considered forward. We have Elantris and Mistborn characters showing up in SLA. Again, those would be forward through time. If this holds true, the only way that Tonk Fah could do it would be if he was actually from the Warbreaker world and hopped to fake being the eldest brother. That might just have been his way of averting Vasher's wrath. IF this theory is true, that makes at least one character from each of his other Cosmere series in TWOK. Galladon from Elantris Demoux from Mistborn Tonk Fah from Warbreaker and, of course, Hoid. I doubt we have seen a character yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if an Alloy character winds up showing his facer in SL2 or beyond.

Well, The Three Musketeers by Dumas is definately French. Lady DiWinter is probably my favorite villain from any book or series. (the book version, not the movie versions). Scott has a YA series where a good portion takes place in Paris and four of the main characters are French, but I really wouldn't consider that much French based as most of the books take place in Paris, London, and San Francisco

Well, the prequels would actually add to the basic story. I don't know that stories involving the Aiel, Sea Folk, or Tinkers would really add all that much to the story. Now, if someone were authorized to do a massive prequel, that might be an easy way to get it done. I always refer to the Eddings prequels for stuff like this, he covered several thousand years of history in around 600 pages each. Sanderson shouldn't have any problem doing either than for a NS clone. He could probably write both finishing up the drafts for SLA2.

Feather, if you like stuff about involving France, I think I read where His Majesty's Dragon is about the Napoleonic era with dragons fighting. I haven't read it, but it was free on kindle many months back.

I agree with you that the blade and plate are probably not part of becoming a Radiant. Though, the plate and blade do seem to enhance their effectiveness as a Radiant. Do soldiers need guns? No, but it makes them much, much more effective in battle. Interesting thought about Syl being a lost spirit. That will take some mega-convincing though. I can't think of a single piece of evidence concerning that.

True, everyone does differ in what they like in their books. Honestly, I do not like books that have needless, graphic, violent sex acts in them. That is one of the main reasons I like Sanderson, Eddings, Chima, and Sullivan so much. They can make fantasy work without putting that type of stuff in them. Generally, it contributes little to the plot and restricts the readership. American Gods is the book I was talking about. I probably should have started with another one of his books, but that was the only one my local library had in stock. Just from memory it has: graphic depictions of prostitution, graphic infidelity, necrophilia, beastiality, graphic homosexual content, and probably others I can't remember. When the tamest part of the book is when a zombie wife tells her husband that his friend was a better lover, the author probably went a little overboard. Some people may actually like reading about that stuff, but I do not.

I have only read one of Gaiman's books, but I will never read anything by him again. I could be on death row and offered a pardon if I read another of his books and I will still tell them what they could do with it.

Ok, I did manage to finish it after bailing for another book for a few days. She does stop complaning about the female trouble around page 130. Oddly, that is precisely where I had broken off my reading. The story is fairly engaging and well-written, but the author seems to fall into the same trap that most of the women writers I have tried fall into. I may just have hit a bad batch, but almost every one so far seems to think that they must include at least one rape or attempted rape scene in their book. Even the best book can be ruined by such stuff. Will I eventually read the second book in the series? Probably, but it will definately be a while unless I can find it on sale or I have run out of everything else to read.

The Belgariad/Mallorean really aren't all that long, or at least they do not feel that way when reading them. The two prequels are the longest of the books by far. I managed to slog through the second Mazalan and eventually gave it a three star rating on goodreads. I started the third one yesterday. So far, it appears to be already better than the second one. Time will tell on that though. I finished the last book in the Alchemyst series by Scott as well. He is a good writer, and all of the books in the series are interesting, but he has a SERIOUS issue with his pre-release readers or his editor. There were several times throughout the series where he forgot who did what in earlier books. Confusing your own characters is not really a good thing. To me, that is just sloppy stuff that should be caught before the book is released. I think that when I finish the third Mazalan book I will go extremely old school. I have been wanting to reread Canterbury tales and Three Musketeers for quite a while now. Possibly start on Dante after that, but that might be too many classics for a short period of time..

Good idea. The boon is not alway what the people ask for, but something like this sounds like her style.

Writing and Spren and magic systems *Mistborn spoilers*

The current blades may actually develop glowing glyphs when held be the corret person. No evidence yet to prove or disprove that though. Fantasy is rife with items developing different powers when held by the corret person. -
Nah, I think I will keep it. It makes it different.

The burning idea is really nothing new to the scheme of religions. People here have been doing it for millenia. Your interpretation is a good one, but I feel we have analog in modern and past practices. Many of those that burn/ed prayers and offerings do/did it as a way to get closer to their god/gods in heaven. Almost everytime I have burned something, the smoke rises. After thousands of years, tradition that had no basis in the origin of the religion tends to become embedded as a "necessary" part of the church practice. -
Isn't the blade part of his penance? I got the impression that he got the blade after being declared truthless.
-
Yeah, you could almost tell by the way that it ended there would be at least one sequel. OF all the books he is planning to write, I can wait the longest for this one. SLA2, Warbreaker 2, and Elantris 2 are far more important in the overall scheme.
-
They must have flown through printings. I got mine week of releas and it ends in 3. That might also have to do with why a considerable portion of the book is bound upside down.
-
Never heard of Moers. Of course, that is not saying much either. I will have to revise my opinion on the second Mazalan book. The second half did turn out to be much better than the first half. Going back to Eon tonight. Probably pick up book 3 of Mazalan Monday.

Reputation as used here is more per post. They probably just did not think the particular post was worth being upvoted. I think your post about ordering the book used to have 2 upvotes, but now it is only one. The person probably just didn't think that a post stating you ordered a book was worth 2 upvotes. There was actually a discussion saying that type of stuff is one of the intended uses of the up/down vote system. That said, if the post had never been upvoted and someone downvoted it, that would need some type of explanation to me. Back to the original topic. While Alloy is pretty short in the english translation, at least they didn't pull a trick from another author that will remained unnamed and use extra wide margins to add pages to the book to make it look a better deal. Truthfully, the only thing that disappointed me about Alloy was its length. In today's economy, it just did not seem worth the price to me, so I got it from my local library. I WILL eventually buy it when I see it on sale, but not before then. Someone stated that many books are short these days. I think that may have been true in the past, but not so much so now. Admittedly, I have not read everything out these days, but to me a non-YA book under 400 pages is more the exception. Even most of the Percy Jackson books were closer to 400 pages with some being 5 to 600.

It seems to me that a Lerasium alloy would have the same effect as burning Lerasium and that metal. Lerasium is not like Atium in that it gives a power light foresight.

Well, there has not been mention that Spren only show themselves when they want to do so. The others might have spren hanging around, but they just might not have made themselves visible yet. Syl did not make herselve immediately visible to Kaladin in her true form either.

Yeah, she killed her father and took his. I don't think she ever summoned it, but the ten heartbeat issue is brought up several times. Well, the king does report seeing stuff that closely resembles what Shallan and Jasnah see, so that pretty much is a given. You forgot Adolin. Other than his father and Kaladin, he has probably acted more honorably than anyone, even if he did initially chafe at the restrictions. Also, I would not at all be surprised if Kaladins father was a nascent Radiant. Just something about him seems to be like what we have seen..

Alloy has a completely different feel from the other books. It is more Wyatt Earp meets big city than the epic that was the original trilogy. That said, it was meant to be that way, so you have to look at it from a different angle. The writing is up to his standards. The story is interesting and gives more insight into the workings of the system and culture. It is a good, quick read. Still, you should probably just wait until it reaches your local library or you find it marked down at a bookstore.
