Harsh environments with small populations that don't have much contact with the rest of the world may be more likely to result in interbreeding?

c: Avoid the false dichotomy and read the book carefully, looking to see how the author handles the fact that the nominal "heroes" of the piece are deeply flawed. Only if the author shows no interest in engaging that issue, or worse, comes out on the wrong side of it, will I throw the book away.

Yeah, if we e.g. got an interlude from the artifabrian who was forced at Surgepoint to refurbish the thing and attach the sapphire, I would happily eat my earlier complaint.

Gavinor's already weaned (also his mother is no longer with us), so if that one is about the future then it would have to be a younger baby.

[OB] Why doesn't Shallan have Plate?
digitalbusker replied to TheDoomsday's topic in Stormlight Archive
@Yata yes that's before the birth of the Brightness Radiant persona. As for why she would suppress plate when the blade is already known, it could be a "this far, no farther" thing, just stubbornly holding back because she can, when so many other secrets have been taken from her. Or we could find out that young Shallan in plate stepped on one of Balat's pet minks and caused him to relapse. -
Not Blackthorn classic, maybe, but the guy from Dalinar's vision in black Shardplate with glowing red eyes and nine shadows (the Biggest, Blackest Thorn) might qualify. I will be miffed if the "mundane... old knife" from the vault turns out to be the dagger with the sapphire in the pine made of gold so bright it was almost white. I get why you make the connection, and you might be right, but it feels too different to me.

Szeth, the Stone Shamans, and Taln's Honorblade
digitalbusker replied to Calderis's topic in Stormlight Archive
On the timescale of Honorblades, "decades" is recent. But yes, the motive for switching the blade is a problem* with the theory. I'm just saying that "Why would they confuse Taln's blade with Jezrien's?" isn't. *: Not that the Stone Shamans don't already do a whole bunch of strange stuff for reasons that only make sense to them--maybe the retrieval teams are all from the Brotherhood of Wayne, and are honor bound to leave something in place of what they took. -
[OB] Cracked Theory: Wit in the Epilogue
digitalbusker replied to Xaklys's topic in Stormlight Archive
We didn't all jump to the conclusion that the gems cracked because they were low on Stormlight, and that the reason for that was the same reason as any other suspiciously dun gem around somebody who might someday become a Radiant? ETA: On the OP: Cryptic-farming doesn't seem like something Hoid would do directly, but I can easily picture him having "Plan M: If one of the Junior Lightweaver-scouts dies, swoop in and bond their Cryptic." -
Szeth, the Stone Shamans, and Taln's Honorblade
digitalbusker replied to Calderis's topic in Stormlight Archive
There's no need for them to assume it's Jezrien's blade. Given that they have collected all the rest, clearly they think they're the proper keepers of Honorblades. It does require them to have a general, rather than specific, Honorblade-detector, but again, they have until recently had all of them that were on Roshar, so why not? -
[OB] Why doesn't Shallan have Plate?
digitalbusker replied to TheDoomsday's topic in Stormlight Archive
I just came across this in my reread. It's when Adolin brings up the possibility of teaching Shallan how to use her Shardblade, in Chapter 15, "Brightness Radiant". She is totally suppressing knowledge of Shardplate right there. -
YesNo and yes. Edit: Misunderstood the question. I thought it was about what happened to her, not what happened to the other thing.

[OB] Oathbringer quotes to remember
digitalbusker replied to Necessary Eagle's topic in Stormlight Archive
Punchy. Guys. -
There could be some wiggle room in the timing of Desolations, depending on what the actual mechanics are. Like, what if it's not enough for a Herald to be willing to break, what if they have to be asked? It could be as simple as "Once a day we haul Taln out of his torture chamber and stand him up in front of the door marked EXIT". If he opens it, boom, Oathpact suspended, Desolation start. If we need a couple more decades to make sure the remnants of the Last Legion are desperate enough to take up the old forms again, maybe we just forget to give him the opportunity for a while.

[OB] What parts of Oathbringer touched you?
digitalbusker replied to MonsterMetroid's topic in Stormlight Archive
I've mentioned this before elsewhere, but Renarin's "Don't worry. You didn't miss something funny. I... well, I doubt you'd find it amusing." really got to me. First off, it's probably the first time he's gotten good news from one of his fits. Second, it would have been so tempting to write that line "cooler" ("I just saw the future, and you're not going to enjoy it." *the music kicks in as he slowly puts on his sunglasses*). But it's Renarin, so instead it comes out all awkward and concerned for the feelings of the immortal monsters who want to kill him. Which somehow makes it even cooler. -
Another Shadesmar-related economic ponderable (spoiler-tagging the supporting argument for brevity): Assuming it's possible for non-Nalthians to have Breath, it would make sense for lots of worldhoppers to eventually acquire some--Breaths are useful, and they don't run out. How big would demand for Breath in Shadesmar have to be to produce a noticeable effect on the Nalthian Breath economy? Keeping in mind that they're already losing a non-trivial number of Breaths to feeding all those Returned, as well as people dying while non-Drab.

[OB] Ashyn = Tranquiline Halls?
digitalbusker replied to MistbornEdgedancer's topic in Stormlight Archive
I dig it, but we have reason to believe the Listeners/Singers/Parsh are native to Roshar. I am curious now about the apparent lack of soul transition events in Rosharan Shadesmar. I suppose it's possible that normal living people don't see that happening--the only PoV we have of that happening is from someone who is a Cognitive Shadow himself already--but it may also be evidence that there's something different about the Rosharan afterlife.- 33 replies

Surely the aviar example indicates you have to steal the power from the spren and the bond from the Radiant. ETA: What I mean is that I don't think you can use the power you stole from the spren without also using the Connection you stole from the Radiant.

[OB] Order specific surges
digitalbusker replied to Willshaping Crasher's topic in Stormlight Archive
Oh I agree there is a memory effect to being a Lightweaver. But it does seem like there's something going on with Shallan sketching idealized versions of people who then go on to act more like the sketch. The skybreakers thing was mostly a joke. -
I seriously doubt it's possible to Hemalurgically steal surgebinding without killing the spren. I expect what you'd wind up with is a static patch of sDNA related to the bond, thus making Surgequisitors™ extra dangerous because they don't answer to spren (remind you of Syl's reaction to the Honor blade?). ETA: In light of a WoB downthread, I retract part of this. I had thought the sDNA related to surgebinding was grafted into the Radiant's soul and could be stolen there, but it looks like it resides in the spren, and what the Radiant gets is Connection code that lets them access it. The fact that you have to spike the spren as well only enhances my main point, though: you can't expect to steal the power without killing the spren.

Say "effective purchasing power" instead of "value" and I've got no quibbles with that statement. There must be some real world analogue, but I can't think of one off hand that reverts to the mean the way infused/dun spheres do. Maybe somebody with a better grounding in macroeconomics.

[OB] Order specific surges
digitalbusker replied to Willshaping Crasher's topic in Stormlight Archive
Skybreakers: They can Divide those who follow the law from those who don't, and Gravity... is a law? Lightweavers: Illumination shows you who you could be, and Transformation helps you become that. (I agree the mnemonics don't seem related.) -
Theory about nightwatcher bonding [OB]
digitalbusker replied to Fan theories's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Szeth definitely has a spren at the end. He mentions that it's quiet (probably scared Nightblood's going to eat it, poor thing), but it's definitely there. If I'm reading the Oathbringer Spoiler Policy right, this post should have [OB] in the title. -
[OB] Spren thoughts and favorites?
digitalbusker replied to The Night Watcher's topic in Stormlight Archive
(emphasis mine) That's the thing that confuses me about the association between Windspren and Honorspren, too. It really feels like Honorspren and Windspren are related because that's implied by the surgebinding chart, not because it makes sense. Although I do think that Syl is probably more mischievous than the average Honorspren (particularly on days where she feels especially capricious). And Timbre is probably Captain Ico's daughter, therefore a she. (She tells Venli her grandfather was killed in the Recreance, Captain Ico carrys his deadeye father around and he says his daughter ran off chasing foolish dreams.) -
[OB] Why doesn't Shallan have Plate?
digitalbusker replied to TheDoomsday's topic in Stormlight Archive
Which part? The fact that Lighweavers speak Truths instead of swearing Oaths (past the first) is well established, both in text (Pattern mostly, but also the epigraphs from the in-world Words of Radiance) and via WoB. The notion that they get their Plate at Ideal 4 is more speculative.
