Staying to care for refugees post-Everstorm is a different story. That duty I understand. I'm only saying Liran should've left pre-Tien/Kaladin going to war.

Okay that might've been a misunderstanding on my part. I get that especially with the potential educational opportunities it would've provided them but I guess he is stubborn and I see what you meant before.

Considering that my wife just transferred into a new job at the ER in her hospital (leaving her very safe department) solely because they need help and it was the right thing to do, I strongly disagree that what I'm saying is anything like that. If Lirin refused to leave Hearthstone because a pandemic was ravaging the town and they needed him, that would be a completely different story. But that's not the case, at all. If he had left, at any time, the city lord would've just had to find another way for his people to be taken care of. Like, that's how it works. Lirin acts like he is the one and only person on Roshar that is capable and willing to treat the small town maladies that the people of Hearthstone incur. It's almost like he has an, I don't know...god complex??? He could've left and been a surgeon elsewhere and accomplish the same amount of good, Hearthstone would've been just fine, and his family would've been in a much better situation.

I can kinda get that, I might've gone to far with the comparison, but I do feel it would be wrong for Lirin to leave all those Refugees to suffer without proper care. I guess I just view Lirin's actions through a different lens. I think I might view him through Kaladin's idelistic version of his father than what might actually be happening.

I do wonder if there's an emotional attachment to Hearthstone for Lirin or if just doesn't like new places as some reasons he doesn't move.

I hope I don't come across as aggressive and if I'm approaching being disrespectful let me know.

So why did you stay Lirin, keeping your family in misery, no matter how much overwhelming evidence was screaming to leave? Even pre-Roshone, it seems everyone else in the family would've been su-uuper good with leaving Hearthstone. But, nooooo. Lirin couldn't leave, acting like he was doing it out of his duty as a surgeon to a town that didn't have anyone else. Even if that was true, he's still putting the best interests of his family second to his own interests. And besides, I think he's just hiding behind that duty. Lirin stayed know Hearthstone out of service to his ego and nothing more. He needed to be the person everyone depended on. Greatshell in a small pond. Lirin always chooses Lirin.

I disagree as someone who's grown up in a less than ideal place that causes my whole family besides my dad to be sick on a regular basis because my dad is a physician it makes total sense that Lirin wants to stay in Hearthstone. Physicians build relationships with the community they are serving and Lirin to leave his duty behind and go because of his family is selfish. It's like saying physicians shouldn't help us during the pandemic because they have a family and the consequences of it could harm their family, however if Lirin told his whole family to stay in place and not go unless he's going I could see you're point.

Kaladin wasn't the favored son because he was the oldest or for his general mirth. He was favored because he had the aptitude to follow in Lirin's footsteps, doing what LIrin loves. Once that path ended, so did Lirin's "love" for Kaladin. Even though it was his fault that Kaladin stopped being a surgeon

It wasn't Lirin's fault that Kaladin stopped being a surgeon it was Kaladin's choice to go be with Tien to protect him. It was also the army's fault that Kaladin wasn't a medic.

Also as many people have mentioned most of who Kaladin is is because of values Lirin instilled in him. I agree that Lirin is most defiantly a jerk, is way to stubborn and emotional dumb but I don't think he's the worst or a coward or a inherently selfish man.

I haven't even started reading it yet, I'm just so happy that this thread exists. I've long maintained that Lirin is the worst dad in the Cosmere and all RoW did was hammer about 10 nales into that coffin. I'm excited to read the hate.

    Lirin. Is. The. Worst.

That's a hot take. I'd prefer Lirin over almost every cosmere dad.  Yes he is bad at communication and was unnecessarly hard on Kal but Oh boy you'd take Straff over him? You'd take Dedalin over him? I think the visceral hate is because the things Lirin does poorly is more relatable to most of but he's not the worst dad in the Cosmere.

The point is, Kaladin was having major difficulties utilizing the surges while trying to save Lirin's sorry ass. Lirin, on the other hand, had little to no contribution in this book. It seemed that his only use was to be saved by a son who he emotionally abused.

Also, Lirin IS A COWARD, for he is not only obsessed with his fragile, unrealistic hope for peace, but that in the entire book, the only one he dared to be harsh to was Kaladin, who, of course would never harm his own father in spite of the latter being a huge jerk.

If SA is ever to be adapted as a live action or even an animated series, Lirin will sure as hell get more hate than he is currently receiving.

I disagree he is a coward he stays firm in his beliefs and continues to heal people in occupations. He never runs away from his problems. Just because he's not a moral-relativist doesn't mean his point of view is wrong in general. He doesn't care what creed, class, race, or eye color he trys to heal. He's just not that emotionally smart and has trauma too. Yes Lirin could've totally handled his relationship with Kal a whole lot better. Yes he is somewhat of a jerk. Do I like him maybe, maybe not. I think at the very least he is well-written and I can relate to the dynamics between him and Kal. Can any of y'all believe we somehow predicted Lirin to die but not Teft?

I had a similar experience but with Mistborn, which let me just say is much easier to adapt.

In fact I was working on those rules today.

Stormlight is much more complex though but if you want to try I'll help out.

I mean there is a Mistborn roleplaying game which is really fun already. Stormlight is an interesting to think about how to adapt of mention this before but using warlock as a base to then build off of with Nahel bonds make sense.

    I can't ship Kalaral.

I don't think Kaladin will ever get past the fact that Laral married the man who sent Tien to die. Or the fact that she, in essence, defended Roshone's actions in OB.

And even if he did get past all of that and there was a romantic interest, there is still the very large issue of him likely feeling like she was only interested in him now that he's a Radiant and of higher rank than she. She, IMO, made herself out to be someone only interested in advancing her station and wasn't interested in Kaladin when he was just a lowly surgeon's apprentice. She may have grown up a great deal after Kaladin left and after she married Roshone, but it doesn't erase her history with them.

I don’t understand this interpretation well and I’m not the best person with words so hopefully this doesn’t sound like I’m attacking you or people of this interpretation . From my standpoint she made the best she could of a really bad situation her parents are both dead(I dont remember if her moms dead so this might be wrong) and all of a sudden the kids she has grown up with  father has just pissed off the new lord who you are living with and who wants you to marry his son and you have little to no agency in this situation. So I don’t blame her for the scene in the kitchen because she had to put up the front to live. I can’t blame someone for protecting their spouse even if that spouse is a little man whose horrible. She also doesn’t seem to interested in advancing her station like that at least. She’s independent and strong willed and now that she has had more agency is able to be more like she was before Roshone arrived to town IMO. Also I always read that she was interested in Kal before Roshone came to town. She made the best of the situation and allowed the town to survive. I believe Kal will have a relationship with her Wether she becomes a romantic interest or just an old friend. Anyways hope this make sense since this sounds like a mess and just some of my thoughts on Laral.

  8. I'm going to point out that the WOB I posted earlier specifically asks if Skar is proto-windrunner not Drehy. I make this distinction since y'all are pointing out that Drehy was the one that said the ideal and not Skar.

I hope I don't come off as Combative just wanted to point out.

I know a popular theory is that most of Bridge 4 will turn into Windrunners, but I have a (slightly) crazy theory that Skar and/or Drehy may actually become Stonewards.

We know from the Order descriptions on Brandon’s website That the Stonewards motto is “I will be there when I’m needed”, and they both consistently had a knack for showing up just at the right time to save Adolin, Kaladin, Gavinor, etc. They are both very dependable. They are each athletic and good fighters. Skar was very much about team dynamics and felt a sense of satisfaction helping Lyn learn how to inhale Stormlight. The major counter to either of them not being selected by a Stoneward spren  (peakspren?) is that they’re currently Windrunner squires (and that we don’t yet know if Stoneward spren want to bond with humans again).

Anyway, just a slightly crazy theory...

Skar and Drehy have already attracted honorspren. Unless I miss read this WOB

    Snote

Would you be willing to confirm if Skar is a proto-Radiant (on the same level as The Lopen?)

It is implied by his statement of "We protect those who cannot protect themselves", which is obviously an affirmation of the oath, if not an outright swearing of it. I could see it being either/or. He's a good man that did what he thought the order, and he himself, wanted or he just became a Radiant on the same level as Kaladin during the Battle of the Tower.

Thanks for your time. I understand if you can't/won't answer that at this time. It's simply a curiosity, so I get it if you're a bit too busy to answer. :P

    Brandon Sanderson

By the end of Book Three, I'd put Skar very close to (though not quite at the level of) Lopen along the way toward full Radiant-hood.

I think this will probably be Kaladin's regression arc.  He will travel a lot(perhaps delivering supplies like soulcasters and gemstones) to various parts of roshar and talk to radiants, ordinary people, and others from his past(I am thinking Tarah and sergeant Hav).  He will look for answers but I doubt he will find any.  Eventually this will prompt him to ask the right question and he will swear his ideal and then do what he needs to.

Yeah and I personally think he'll swear the ideal at the end of part 3.

I love this. The back half of the series is just Kaladin smoking cigars and reminiscing on his 1998 season and talking about how the Lopen dyed his hair and never showed up to Bridge 4 practice.

We'll call it The Last Windrun

In this analogy would Moash be Horace Grant? Is Rock or Teft Scottie? Anyways this was a really good chapter and its fun reading Syl's perspective and I think this might be one of the first interludes.

  12. Honestly I don't really ship much when it comes to Stormlight Archive. I'd like if Kaladin ends up with someone but I don't care who(except for maybe Shallan). I'm also going to reiterate what I've posted before all I want to see is Kaladin as a a Dad that's it. Wether as a single dad or in a relationship with someone.  I also hold little opinions about other characters possible pairings.

  13. Personally all I want from any ship with Kaladin involved is Kaladin to just became a Father. Just think it would be funny. I'm suspecting we get some of this with Gavinor(did spell that right). I suspect we will see more interaction of Kaladin and Jasnah in the next book because of Gavinor and we will therefore see more of their dynamic and can make better assumptions with whether they fit or even if either would be interested at all.
