Restares is right-this is what must be done
I would point out that we don't know what "this" is. Yes, its possible "this" refers to killing Kaladin's squad and stealing the shardblade. Or to taking out anyone that refuses a shardblade on the risk they can hear the screams/might become a radiant.
But it's also possible that "this" is something entirely else that Amaran is (mis?)interpreting to fit his desire for a shardblade. It could be a more general command to collect shardblades, and is not specifically pointed at this event or meant to order this manner of execution. It's also possible that someone else gave this command in the name of Restares, and Kelak wasn't actually involved. We don't see any evidence of Kelak/Restares communicating with Amaran in this scene, or if he'd be able to in such a short timeframe.

But back to the tattoo. I can't remember if this is true, but don't Radiant bodies remove tattoos as a form of healing? Maybe I'm getting mixed up with the slave brands...
Radiants heal what they view as damage, or not part of themselves. If they've accepted the tattoos, then they can have them.

all she needed was a good excuse...and then two days later, Sig gives her the perfect opening. Seems connected to me.
I wasn't really onboard with the idea in till I read this line, then I became very suspicious of ghostblood interference.
That said, there are two problems with that. Having seen Sig's POV, plus having known him in general, it seems unlikely he'd turn traitor. And his spren is an honorspen, so being a secret agent also seems unlikely. So I'm not sure how the GB would influence the situation here. Being a double agent wouldn't conflict with their oaths, but the people honorspren are attracted to are the type of people I wouldn't expect too much underhanded activity from.
Hoid is another choice, we haven't seen him and Sig interact much. Although I'd mark that up to just too much going on and not enough space for a bunch of minor things to happen in the story. So it could be possible, but I'm not sure what motive Hoid would have for getting Shallan into Shadesmar.
So I'm going to chalk it up to Sig's spren being a bit more hopeful. We did see a good portion of the Honorspren were willing to aid the humans against orders from the older spren, and some that were willing, but wouldn't go against orders, although tension was building.

I found this one, though I remember something more specific:
That's all I could find as well, but I also remember something that more directly implied that Odium took a hit during the fight with Ambition.
On the topic of invested in Roshar, my understanding was that the conflict with Honor forced Odium to invest much more than he would have wanted, and at this point even with the other shards gone, leaving would be a very difficult prospect.

I think this is Brandon showing what the cost of the shard's godlike power is. Sure, you get crazy awesome powers, but it's looking more and more like they're just not worth it. It's a drop of your personality in an ocean of force, it's going to change you eventually. Rayse is one of the most crafty, dangerous individuals in all the cosmere, and look at what it did to him.
He is fury, he is emotion to the extreme, he is the thrill of the contest. And he's losing that contest, and has been for a long time. He's been stuck on one rock for several thousands years, and the power is not happy about that. And he was presented a deal he didn't want, but wasn't willing to wait any longer. So he's getting crushed between the fury of being stuck, and the fury of a bad deal, on top of whatever damage he's taken during his crusade, on top of spreading his attention to both the planet and large portions of the cosmere. It's not too far fetched that he missed a sword that Renarin effectively turned invisible.
Rayse in his prime was a big deal, and extremely dangerous, but we're not dealing with Rayse in his prime, it's more of a personality struggling to just stay afloat. Very dangerous sure, but not like he was in the past, and I think Hoid miscalculated on how well Rayse has held together. Dalinar went from "I'm going to put my fist through your skull" to "logistics and supply lines are king", and I think R-Odium was going the opposite way the longer he existed, creating vulnerabilities.
As for the Ruin comparison, Ruin was not scarred the same was as Odium, his power seemed much more on board with patience the whole build up a tower to knock it down, and his attention was focused almost entirely on a much smaller and less complex situation. Also, Preservation was mentally crippled/dead during their conflict, but Cultivation was still very much alive, on top of Honor's chains.

I was thinking it might be jars full of the white sand. That would explain where Raboniel got ahold of the sand and account for the clinking sound.

It's never explained how he knew this, I'd guess either through the diagram, or Odium just told him what what happening in Shinovar at some point (he is lonely and likes to brag).
Subvisual Haze has the quote, it's just that quick one line, which Szeth originally seemed to ignore.

That is an interesting question... Nightblood cuts through all three realms, not just the physical vessel but it destroys the spiritual and cognitive aspects as well, that why he's so dangerous. I'm not sure if he'd be capable of damaging a dawnshard though, partially because we don't know what the dawnshards fully are, but also for the meta reasons of being able to break something so powerful.

I selected option two, but I'll likely be skimming through Book 1, then picking up Interludes into Book 2.
Option 5 is tempting for chaos points though.

Also translated the description, and yes, it would seem that Urithuru will be a focus, and highly likely they'll figure something out. Although technically not required, it does seem likely they'll figure something out about the Sibling as well, which is exciting.
Of course, the tower of Lights could also refer to Lasting Integrity, or to another fortress which is lighting up as fireballs/siege-weapons rain into it.

I'm liking this, it's starting to feel like we're actually seeing the behind the scenes system Brandon is using to run the cosmere.
I would propose ingenuity as the last of the Change Shards. Involves not only changing the tools/technology, but using the tools to change the world.
I'd also change 'Care' to 'Experience', as the other dawnshards about this world, and this one is you experiencing the world.
And I'd propose Sorrow as the last of the Care/Experience shards. Another runner up is fear, but that doesn't really fit the god scheme and messes with the survive shards. Also, the Threnody system has a bunch of stuff named after sorrowful things, so that lines up nicely with this shard arranging that.
And this last one isn't as confident as the others, but maybe wisdom/prudence under survival?

I see 4 possibilities for the difference. The first three are pretty similar.
3 dawnshards are bonded, 1 is not.
1 dawnshard is bonded, 3 are not.
3 dawnshards still exist, while the 4th has been rendered permanently damaged/changed in some form or fashion. Brandon did note that the weapon used to destroy Adon was no longer functional. Or maybe vice versa, 3 were expended, but 1 remains at full capacity.
Quoteimriel452
My request for Brandon was "for information on the current status of the weapon that was used to kill Adonalsium, including the current possessor".
Brandon Sanderson
The weapon was expended, and no longer exists in its original form.
General Signed Books 2016 (Feb. 25, 2016)The 4th option is that one of the dawnshards is genuinely different from the others in what it's capable of or how it functions.
On 11/9/2020 at 10:48 AM, CaptainRyan said:My guess: One Dawnshard is contained inside a certain "robot spren" that likes to destroy evil and the other three are not.
There isn't enough evidence yet to fully support this, but I totally dig the idea. This would fully explain why his existence seems so unique.

No, you're not alone. I feel Kaladin and Shallan's story arcs are leaning more into drama than fantastical. Because it's Brandon, I'm confident that the payoff will be worth it, but it is a bit of a slog/frustrating to go some of the beginning chapters. I'm sure that'll change once we get into the meat of the story.
As someone who has dealt with depression, Kaladin picking himself up was inspiring, and him regressing was, well, depressing, albiet realistic. And I think it plays into a theme Brandon is aiming for, which is that despite the magical oaths, the radiants are still themselves.
And I was similarly disappointed that Shallan had another painful memory that she was still ignoring. Will have to wait and see on that one.

This is a very good question that has been bugging me for some time. Given the plethora of guns on Scadrial why don't we see any on Nalthis or Roshar? In fact why aren't Roshar and Nalthis manufacturing their own guns?
Guns on Scadrial are a recent creation, so it would make sense for it to have not spread. Nalthis, Roshar, and Sel also have large amounts of magic technology and rules to research, so it would make sense they wouldn't develop into the mechanical/chemical sciences as much, so they can't make the guns themselves. Taldain is the only other one to develop guns thus far (that we know of), and it's under a blockade, so the tech can't travel out.
Also, quite a few world hoppers have access to investiture abilities, so early guns maybe not appear as powerful in comparison.

Warning, beyond here there be spoilers.
Spoiler1- Interlude I-7: Venli mentions that the Alethi mistakenly thought that the greatshells were the gods of the singers. Has this been discussed elsewhere? Is there more info on this point?
I think this was the first mention of it, not 100% on that though. This would have been when humans and listeners first met, lots of ideas were probably thrown around, misunderstanding and all that.
2- Interlude I-10: Is the Hog that attacks Sheler a greatshell or a new animal?
It wasn't really described beyond being a greatshell of some kind, could be a chasmfiend or a different type.
3- Interlude I-11: Did Venli bond two spren: the voidspren in her gemheart and Timbre? Can humans and other singers do the same or is it a unique case for Venli?
Everyone can, but it's hard. Listeners seems to have trouble attracting sapient spren, and humans can't really bond with lesser spren. They can bond two radiant spren, but they'd have to satisfy both oaths at once, so very unlikely.
4- Ch89: Are Nightblood and Vivenna / Azure's sword shardblades? Do swords on Nalthis and Roshar contain the same type of Investiture?
They were inspired by shardblades. Their method of creation is different, along with some of the effects, but the end result is similar. The investiture types are different (stormlight and breath), but can be used in similar ways if you know what you're doing.
5- Ch 89: Can a certain type of shardblades be summoned / used in Shadesmar: Honorblades, Dead Shardblades, Sprenblades?
Awakended blades can, and I would guess honorblades too, but that's unknown. So far the other ones can't manifest.
6- Ch 92: Why do some people call Szeth by his dad's name (Neturo) and others by his grandfather's name (Valano)?
After being declared truthless, his name change, as he wasn't considered worthy of his father's name.
7- Ch 92: What does Szeth mean that he knew a voice similar to Nightblood's in his youth? We probably have to wait to his flashbacks to know more?
I suspect Szeth came in contact with a sapient spren, but this is unknown, will have to wait on flashbacks.
8- Ch 92: Why does Nightblood only burn eyes on Roshar?
He doesn't, he eats people. It's shardblades that burn out the eyes.
9- Ch 92: Is Shashara from Nalthis the same person as Shalash on Roshar?
No, just similar names.
10- Ch 92: Is Nightblood's consumption of Stormlight on Roshar the same mechanism as him consuming Breaths on Nalthis - as both are types of Investiture? Is Nightblood a spren on Roshar?
Yes to the mechanism, Nightblood is pretty flexible and can eat pretty much anything. Is he a spren? He is similar to a spren, in that he is living investiture, but he's different, so kinda like a cousin.
11- Ch 99: Do the Spren use the copper on the ship in Shadesmar to communicate through vibration? Is this related to some Cosmere metallic quality (Should I find something in Mistborn about this)?
I think this has to due with Roshar and tones, but this hasn't been explained fully, so it's possible the copper plays a specific role.
12- Ch 100: Why can't Dalinar use the Stormfather as a shardblade?
He might actually be able to, he summoned something that was enough to activate the oath gates, Stormfather just doesn't want him to.
13- Ch 100: What is the metal that falls from the sky and can block a shardblade (is it also a reference to a metal from Mistborn)?
Aluminum, it has investiture canceling properties, and that applies everyone in the cosmere. It cancels out the magical cutting edge of shardblades, although it will still be damaged by the 6 foot piece of metal slamming into it.
14- Ch 100: Why do Vedens look Alethi but speak a foreign tongue?
Different counties and cultures, changes faster than looks. Also, they close by and have similar climates.
15- Ch 101: Are screaming blades only the ones left during the Recreance by the Knights Radiant?
Yes.
16- Ch 101: Do we know who Ico's daughter is?
No, but fan theory is that she's the spren bonding Venli.
17- Ch 106: What does Nin mean when he tells Szeth: "The others must interpret what they have sworn before and I hope they will see the truth?"
I think he's referring to the Skybreakers that swore to follow the laws of the land, and how that may conflict with the authority of the singers. I'm not sure exactly what truth he's talking about though, but it may be that he believes the Singers are the rightful owners of the land.
18- Ch 108: Mythica book mentions that the Midnight Mother was destroyed at Aharietiam. How is she still in Urithiru?
The Midnight Mother was captured inside of a gem, and that may have been when it happened.
19- Ch 109: What does Venli mean when she says that the spren betrayed the singers for the humans?
Short answer, we don't know. When humans first arrived, it appears the spren began to favor and bond with them, and maybe the singers saw this as a betrayal. But we don't know if there was an actual formal agreement broken, or if the spren just found new friends. Also, Venli made this comment based on songs of history, she wasn't there so this might just be her view.
20- Ch 114: Why did the Nightwatcher call Dalinar both son of Honor and son of Odium?
Just a guess, but Honor adopted humans, and Dalinar is also heavily influenced by Odium.
21- Ch 114: How does the Nightwatcher know about Nightblood?
Dunno, either she's aware of things going beyond where she is, or she came into contact with Nightblood.
22- Ch 114: When Dalinar returned after meeting Cultivation, he hears only leaves rustling and thinks he should hear something else. What should have he heard? Screams of children?
Probably, or some buried memory is associating Cultivation's voice with the leaves. But I would guess its the crying he's grown so used to hearing, even if he's forgotten every hearing it.
23- Ch 115: Does Odium change his appearance depending on who sees him - Dalinar sees him human, Venli sees him as a parshman?
Yes.
24- Ch 116: What are the yellow spren leading the Fused?
Dunno, rafo. Presumably a void spren of some kind.
25- Ch 117: Why did Lift say that the Nightwatcher lied to her?
Lift was under the impression that she wasn't suppose to grow up, but can't deny it much more as she keeps getting bigger.
26- Ch 119: In the battle of Thaylen Field, there were 3 Un-made? The 2 in the Thunderclasts and Yelig-Nar as the Black Smoke, or there were any additional ones?
Thunderclast aren't unmade, we don't know what they are actually, but I think just fused on steroids. Just Yelig-Nar and Nergaoul were present from the unmade.
27- Ch 120: Amaram's transformation of the ground to liquid after ingesting the crystal (Yalig-Nar??) - is that some form of Voidbinding?
No, that's a surge, Cohesion I believe.
28- Ch 121: Why did the Fused instruct Moash to kill Jezrien?
Either because he's a Herald and may be recruited by the either side, or to test run their fancy new weapon. Probably both.
29- Ch 122: What does Adrotagia mean when she tells Taravangian: "The Herald's insanity prompted us?"
Taravangian explained his actions to Dalinar by saying they trusted the words of a Herald. He used that as an excuse on the betrayal, in order to hide the truth of the diagram.
30- Ch 122: Is Renarin's spren, Glys, still corrupted after the end of OB?
Yes.
31- Ch 122: How did Jezrien's honorblade go from Szeth to Leshwi (who then gives it to Moash?)
Kaladin claimed it from Szeth, and then gave it to Dalinar, who stored it in the tower, which the diagram group stole, and then gave to Odium's fused.
32- Ch 122: Nohadon knew how to write and read. When did the men stop reading and writing?
Some time after Recreance, culture shift led to all 2 hands skills being masculine (like swinging weapons) and 1 handed skills were feminine (like reading and writing).
33- Ch 122: Why did Dalinar "accept the sword "only through the cloth"? What does it mean?
I'm not sure which instance you're referring to, but if it was a dead shardblade, the cloth will stop the screaming.2 -
I think the issue may be that human's have much deeper and larger emotions, or maybe a larger cognitive/soul aspect. Singer's aren't a single being, look at how much of a change the spren has on them, and even the tones abilities to change their mood. Singers are part singer, part spren, and part Roshar/tones. But spren are bonding to just the singer part, so its bonding to a person vs bonding to 1/3 of a person (probably larger than a third, but a smaller than what a human could offer).
Quote"Though broth are we, their meat is men." (Song of Spren, 9th stanza)
And another point to support this theory is that the two singer that attracted spren, Eshonei and Venli, both show a larger degree of personality (maybe 'self' would work better) then the other singers (they are main characters, but still). Eshonei talks about activity challenging the built in impulses of the various forms, and Venli seems pretty much Venli in the three forms we see her in.

Instead of an error, I view this as Vasher changing his thinking over time. His original categories were based solely on awakening standards. Now he's had time to incorporate the greater realmatics into his categories.
Also, we see him referring to himself as not a real person. Now, he may have believed this back in Warbreaker and never said it, but working on the assumption that this is a new idea for him (as in came about after Warbreaker). This would make him more inline with a spren than a person with a real soul, which would lead to pulling all forms of investiture life forms into this categorization efforts.
3 -
I'd also point out that death by shardblade is probably not healthy for the soul or mind. Part of the maddness is probably due to strength of self, but other factors like number and methods of death could have an impact as well.

I suspect the thunderclast are a different type of entity from the rest of the fused. They're too different, both in that they're animating stone instead of possessing a singer, and that they didn't seem to be actively using a surge when fighting, instead relying on raw power. It's possible that a surge is involved in operating their bodies, but even then that's a different method of wielding a surge than the usual fused.
1 -
I would also point out not just Rock using a shardbow, but Dalinar also lifted a very large rock at the cathedral he was repairing.
I think Brandon's comment about stormlight not "normally" increasing strength was in reference to general stormlight channeling. It would seem at least one of, if not multiple surges, are capable of enhancing strength. That, or something else is at work in those scenes.

At least one of the Fused was surprised Odium was able to use Nergaoul to bond Amaram's army en masse (or was it some other spren that joined the soldiers? I've interpreted it both ways on various readings)
I think the surprise was that he could bond void spren to humans, it was just achieved by using Nergaoul.

Why attack Urithiru? It's probably the most fortified place on Roshar. Conventional strategy would suggest you attack softer targets elsewhere, Vedenar, Azimir, Narak, and eventually put Urithiru under seige. Unless you have a massive force advantage or some arcane reason Urithiru needs to fall first.
It's been hinted that an active Urithiru would provide enormous benefits, food in particular who knows what else. Even if it's the most fortified position right now, striking before it could be activated may be a tactically sound idea.

As others have said, information on shards is kept under lock and key by Brandon for now.
That said, I would recommend reading the first Mistborn Trilogy, followed by Secret History and the Arcanum, then Stormlight, then coppermind and wobs. That'll probably give you the best information available on shards, whilst avoiding spoilers.0
