  1. So in Oathbringer Dalinar is almost smashed by a large boulder and he noticed a figure in the distance described as "Gargantuan" and "that moved on spindly glowing legs". What is it? Does it factor into any scenes later in the book? I don't remember this scene from a previous listen.
  2. I might have to try The Darkness whithin some time soon. I liked the premise of the Morgan books about these "Heroes" who's big moments happen before the book opens and these stories take place in their latter years and explore how the fame has affected their lives. I must admit I was uncomfortable with the graphic gay sex scenes though.
  3. @Wander89 It may not be what you are looking for but the Jules De Grandin short story collections by Seabury Quinn (There are five of them that can be read in any order). They are basically like Sherlock Holmes detective and Watson partner like stories with a supernatural twist Wearwolves, Zombies etc. Or many of them look like its something supernatural but it turns out to be evil men. They are kind of expensive...I have been collecting them from the beginning when there is a three day only sale a few months after publication where they are only $1.99 for a digital copy; who knows it might pop up again. Anyways I think they are fun. They were written in the 1930's and were published in the same magazine as Conan (Robert E Howard), Lovecraft, Clark Smith. The language is very readable and does not feel dated. Although there have been some obvious societal values and norms that have changed since thesr stories have come out.
  4. Watching Winter Soldier again *whispers "Hail Hydra"*
  5. @officiumdefunctorum I thought you were listening to James Marsters with the Dresden Files? What Vance series were you listing to?
  6. Yes! I wonder how he will release it? Is he writing it for some sort of anthology like he did Shadows for Silence, Sixth of Dust etc? Or will it be a digital only release and eventually collected with other stories and printed as part of Arcanum Unbounded 2?
  7. Well its official....the first of what is being called The Unholy Trifecta is now finished! Scott Lynch announced on Twitter that The Thorn of Emberlain is finished and now will go through the editing process. Now the ball is in the Rothfuss/Martin court now. I, personally, think Winds of Winter will come next. I have zero confidence in Doors of Stone coming out in the next five years.
  8. I dont like fighting the crowds and usually wait a week or two before seeing a movie in theaters. I just saw Endgame yesterday.
  9. 1. I think a lot of people think the beginning of the first book borrows a lot from LoTR. It starts to be more of its own thing as the book progresses. 2. Various nations and peoples need to unite to fight against a great evil (and his minions) under the direction of a great hero who is occasionally reincarnated. It's a long difficult road to get everyone united enough for that battle. 3. This series was started in 1990. The language is modern. I find the author to be long winded but many enjoy that level or world building
  10. Saw it today I liked both but enjoyed Infinity War more. I thought the humor was better and it was faster paced. I felt like the first third of Endgame was people just moping around. Still the final battle scene was amazing and I loved fat Thor.
  11. Ahh! Doesn't bother me. Its very easy to just scroll past posts that are uninteresting or I don't want to read for whatever reason.
  12. If you were doing anything inappropriate one of the site monitors would let you know; they are really good about that and keeping things running smoothly. If you haven't heard anything from them than don't worry about it.
  13. I know a lot of people have talked about this, but "good people" is American slang and fairly common. It also shows up in the Dresden Files a few times when the protagonist sometimes says it there. I think I first encountered the expression about ten years ago and usually hear it mentioned a few times a year.
  14. Only about a third of the way through, but I am really enjoying it! I was worried when I found out that Suzy Jackson (a unknown for me) would be chosen to narrate, but she is doing a amazing job and is reading the book like a BOSS! There are a few silly moments, but it is a Young Adult story and it doesn't bother me. It's actually the type of story I need right now to take my mind off something in real life. My theory right now is that what happened to Spensa's father was this: the aliens used some sort of psychic powers to show him the humans were the corrupt ones in the war and that the war being waged was not justified. Perhaps this will be disproven by the end of the book or has been discussed elsewhere (haven't read all the posts). Dont worry about Spoilers for me. I'm believer in the joy of the journey not the destination. Just a few of my thoughts; I'm having fun with this story. I think Quirk is my second favorite character. Jerk Face reminds me a lot of Ice-Man from Top Gun to foil Spensa's Maverick. Dang I want to rewatch Top Gun now.
  15. I think you are thinking about Dan Wells and him trying to "fix" the Apocalypse Guard series. I'm unaware of any collaboration with Alcatraz.
  16. The Dresden Files- Marsters and Butcher are great Lightbringer series by Weeks- The author reminds me a lot of Sanderson and the narrator (Simon Vance) is one of the most famous and celebrated readers out there
  17. The Gutter Prayer by Hanrahan. I have actually really been wanting to read this since it came out in January, but for some reason I kept on getting distracted. It's also the first book I've encountered that a Ghoul is one of the protagonists. It's still early in the book but its good so far.
  18. Just finished Seven Blades in Black by Sykes (the first in a new world and series). It was dark, funny, violent and profane. A love letter to grimdark, Final Fantasy, and westerns. I think all malazan fans would love it. I can't comment on the narrator because I read this one. It was probably more "adult" for the average 17th shard demographic so I wanted to share it in this sub forum where most of us seem to be a little older.
  19. I forgot about the Shake prayer in RG. I guess it is technically three books. T'riss also mentions it in a conversation with Anomander in ch. 9 of Forge of Darkness.
  20. Gene Wolf is one of those authors that I don't know if I'm smart enough to "get". I've tried Shadow and Claw, and The Wizard/Knight duology. Do you have any recommendations of a better starting point or any tips to approaching his works? In Malazan news I keep hearing in TV shows that "the universe is telling us..." I am waiting to hear that expression in real life so I can say, "The sea does not dream of you." Upvote to whoever can list both Malazan books where that phrase makes a appearance.
  21. @Jaywalk I personally would go with War and Peace by Tolstoy (Briggs translation) but Les Miserables has its moments. I had my problems with it, but perhaps you will like it more; I love the musical though! I'm also a big fan of The Decameron by Boccaccio.
  22. Listening to the audiobook A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine and just started Seven Blades in Black by Sykes; two very different books. The first is focused on slow moving politics set in a Galactic Empire. It also has the greatest emphasis on the semantics of language, of any fictional book, that I have ever read. The second book has one of the strangest cover art I have ever seen and is basically a combination of Abercrombie's Best Served Cold and Sergio Leone's Man with No Name trilogy (a Western). Both are good so far.
  23. The only thing I have to contribute is that there is currently a big push amongst members to stop referring to ourselves as "Mormons" or 'LDS" and use the official name which is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". It's a little confusing to people that think we worship mormon and other things. They have even changed several official websites and the main choir to reflect this emphasis. Not really interested in debating religion or anything; just wanted to do my part to respect the wishes of everyone who is belongs to that church (which seems to be a significant percentage on this site).
  24. Finished! To better organize my thoughts how organize them in three categories. I'll try to remain somewhat vague. What I liked: What I didn't like: Miscellaneous:
  25. I thought that the Tukar God priest was a Dakhor monk. Still rather fond of the idea in theory, but it was most definitely disproven in Oathbringer.
