  1. @officiumdefunctorum I'm a big Dresden files fan and think Marsters does a amazing job with the audiobooks. Which one are you on? I think my favorite is either Dead Beat or Changes. Also started listening to Kellanveds Reach today and about 2.5 hours into. A lot of fun so far! I had completely forgotten who Calot and Orjin Samarr were and had to look them up.
  2. Probably his best story. If you want something truly bonkers check out his book Breakfast of Champions. Sirens of Titan is also pretty good.
  3. Every time its happened the dog owners are completely shocked and say nothing like this has ever happened before and is completely out of character for the dog...and yet its happened to me before, my wife, and my son; all different dogs in different states. What all of the situations have in common is that it happened when we were minding our own business and a dog was off a leash. I have owned dogs before (not recently) and have always kept them in a yard with a good fence or on a leash. However thank you for your other kind words.
  4. Got bitten by a neighborhood dog on my walk today. People never keep their dogs on leashes and say they wouldn't hurt anyone, but they do and it's happened to me before and other family members. It's so frustrating. I didnt approach it or anything...just walking on the sidewalk. It barely broke skin, and its up to date on all shots so I told the owner I wouldn't press charges but will call animal control if I see it roaming free again. Please all dog owners keep your beasts under control and stop letting them roam free in public places!
  5. I am very much heartened and optimistic based upon the prologue. It was probably the most straightforward and easiest (for the reader) that he has ever written. The writing reminds me a lot of House of Chains and it was nice to see more of the Teblor. I can tell he is making a effort to reign himself in (which is a good thing).
  6. Always wanted to play these games, but gaming is a expensive hobby and I already spend all off the "fun money" (in the budget I made for myself) on books. If I ever make it rich I will buy a ps4 and add this game to near the top of the list! I also saw a trailer for Ghost of Tsushima. If you are gamer you might want to look into it. Thanks for sharing!
  7. That's pretty cool, but I feel mixed about it. I am usually completely lost by a Erikson prologue and can only appreciate and understand them upon finishing the book. I would feel more excited by releasing chapter one, but these are first world problems haha. He is trying to make these books more accessible and commercial so perhaps the prologue will be a good measuring stick.
  8. Its on the actual chapter. I need to reread the book, bc I cant remember the scene well but, judging from the few sentences around the quote, it looks like the throne of shadow itself was talking to Paran. Someone with a fresher memory than mine might want to correct that though.
  9. Its in chapter 23. He calls him "the new Emperor of the Edur, this Tyrant of Pain, this Deliverer of Midnight Tides" It doesn't go into details about what Midnight Tides actually is though.
  10. So this is somewhat embarrassing, but I just realized I don't know what Midnight Tides refers to nor what the cover art (see image below) is depicting. The only idea that I can think that Midnight Tides refers to is that the image invokes a sense of dread of a dark overwhelming force; which would be the Edur and the birth of their empire. Any thoughts from fellow veterans? And yes I consider anyone that has read 1-10 of Erikson books veterans and hopefully any real veterans realize that I am being a little tongue in cheek about the word. Btw @hoiditthroughthegrapevine cant remember if you have read the Kharkanus book or not? If you haven't you may disagree with me and think Erikson hasn't missed a beat. There is a group of fans, albeit small, that even believe that Kharkanus is even better than his main series. I think that @AngelEy3 has said he enjoyed them as much as the regular series and @officiumdefunctorum is high on them as well. I agree that Erikson will always be the more skilled writer, but sometimes writers can be too intelligent and avant-garde for their own good and forget what makes a good story. At the moment I believe Esslemont has a firmer grasp on that than Erikson but am really excited for the Karsa books.
  11. Its funny how you can read a book a few years later and have a completely different experience with it. Reading the the Powder Mage books (currently almost done with The Crimson Campaign) by Mcclellan and having a blast with them. I had previously given up after the first one. The writing, pacing, and dialogue reminds me a lot of Sanderson. I guess I'm technically listening to them and the narrator (first time I've heard of him) is doing a fine job as well.
  12. I added a poll question for fun. Its showing up on every page of the thread for me; i know its long so if its too big of a annoyance for people to scroll past every time I will remove it if enough people speak up.
  13. Did you feel this way based on fans met in real life, the shard, the official page or elsewhere? I got a bit of it myself when I was part of the Malazan Facebook group, but I just figured that Facebook brings out the worst in most people and I just chalked it up to that. One of the many reasons I left that group was when Fall of Light came out and there seemed to be a further malazan clique/faction that was pro-Kharkanus and any criticism of the two books was met with, "you're just too dumb to understand it" These are just outlier examples though. I think most interactions I've had they seem to good, reasonable people.
  14. Wow! That was far more detailed than anything I was expecting. He worries about fan response, but in my experience we just want a occasional update (perhaps twice a year even if its a couple of sentences) and not to be talked down to. This was also the first time I've heard that Esslemont has another early empire trilogy that he will be working on; yeah! I'm excited for his new trilogy and while it may be odd to have the first book if the Karsa trilogy to not have the main character I understand it; especially after his explanation. Honestly I think the fans just want a good story. As long as its also accessible, and I believe thats what got him into trouble with the Kharkanus books, the fans will love it. Thanks for the link!
  15. Greatest emo song? My candidate is: Its a bit of a guilty pleasure. Along with other songs that are not emo like Cyrus" Party in the USA, Swift's Blank Space, and Sia's Cheap thrills. Niki Fm, by the same band, as the one posted is also strong as well.
  16. Did you read the abridged or unabridged version? I'm a big believer in unabridged, but this book is one of the few that could definitely benefit from cutting or editing a few sections. There are 100's of pages describing the french sewer system, convent life and the battle of Waterloo its too much I tell you! Still a powerful story that I'm glad ive read. Loved seeing the play live!
  17. About 60 pages into Ruin of Kings by Lyons and had to put it away into the maybe later category. I just don't get it. It was heavily promoted by Tor with them pulling out all the stops to push this book on people but from what I've read its just so mediocre. The reviews out there have been mostly positive so perhaps some other sharders may like it though. The Spider by Carew was good though (just finished it). It's a breezy military fantasy book but I just love the main characters and the action scenes.
  18. Fun fact about the U.S.S.R and WW 2 is that Germany sent about 80% of their troops to the eastern front during the war. Also regarding Fjordell Brrandon said in the new end note to the Anniversary Elantris the Hrathan was based upon his experiences as a missionary so his faith was one of many factors when constructing that religion. Regarding the O.P I thought the same thing and agree with you. I had a similar thread a while back and didn't find many that agreed though.
  19. Kellanved's Reach is now available for preorder on U.S audible (and most likely other audiobook platforms). I will be going this route to consume it; I think the narrator John Banks is fantastic.
  20. I haven't seen it yet, but plan to! I promised my wife we would see Isn't it Romantic next though. For those wanting a review theres a blogger I follow who generally gives fair and thoughtful reviews which I will link to here: http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2019/03/captain-marvel.html?m=1
  21. I found the Pratchett books to be a little too silly for my tastes, but definitely give them a chance. They are really popular and well thought of so there's a good chance you will like them
  22. Just finished The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie. What a unique book! Here is my review: I think the readers determination of how much they will enjoy the book will be determined on two factors. The first is: how do you feel about second person point of view? One, of the two points of views, is told entirely in this way. I love the novelty of it, but it is a bit of a awkward and inelegant way of relaying information to the reader. It didn't bother me too much and the plot was good enough to keep the pages turning. The second is what entertains you? There isn't a bunch of chase scenes and explosions in the book. It is a book of subtle political maneuvering and the story of a god the takes centuries. It is beautifully written and I was enthralled by the tale. I don't know if whoever is reading this will like the book, but I encourage them to try it. The ending was also a big surprise to me! I was expecting the author to zig and she ended up zagging. It is also a standalone for those tired of waiting for the next book in a series. @Sorana I'm tagging you because you were interested in my thoughts.
  23. Not really a fan of those Willful Child books, but to be fair they're supposed to be made for Trekies which I've only scene a few episodes and a couple of movies. I was completely underwhelmed by what I read of Rejoice and couldn't make it past the first 50 pages. I hope he can get his career back on track with the Karsa books because right now Erikson is the Fener of the Malazan world and Esslemont is Trake. If the metaphor is to obscure, put another way, Esslemont is ascending and Erikson is descending.
  24. Erikson posted on Facebook recently that the November release date on amazon was completely made up and will not be happening. When Erikson was writing the ten book series he was putting in approximately 8 hours a day writing so that the books came out roughly one year from one another; those days are long gone. He seems to be taking more relaxed approach to writing (I have no problems whatsoever with it either) and all we know is that the author thinks it is coming along well.
  25. The publishers of Leo Carew just mailed me a advance copy of his new book The Spider. This book doesn't come out until June so I am really excited! I really liked the first book so I'm pumped for the sequel! This is only the second ARC I have ever received!
