I think thats part of what makes her so interesting though. In some respects she is a battle hardened warrior, but in other ways she's acts like a naive 8 year old. A scene I liked in the movie was when she was talking to her boyfriend and when she realized that he needed money she literally offered to sell her heart for money. It was the act of someone with little life experience, but also one that is pure from the corruption of the world. She's almost like two people; the newborn and the one who has natural instinct for violence.

You already have a trade paperback; the smaller version you are alluding to is called a "mass market paperback". Yes I'm sure they are, but for most publishers it is the last format to be released. Saga press is releasing all the versions of their books at once, but they (and a few other publishers) are in the vanguard in that respect.

@Sorana Second person point of view is making a bit of a comeback right now. Ann Leckie is releasing a start to a new fantasy series called The Raven Tower and it looks like most of it is in second person. I am really intrigued by it and already placed a hold on the copy my library ordered. Its been getting mixed reviews so a lot of people love it or hate it. The premise of it sounds really fun!

I found both authors (Erikson/Esslemont) use of violence, profanity, and graphic content to be handles with more finesse and taste than someone like Joe Abercrombie (who is also one of my favorite authors) but I cannot dispute what @officiumdefunctorum said. Best of luck finding a new series to read that meets your checklist. You might Raymond E. Feist especially his original trilogy and his Serpentwar series (both set in the same world).

Also a big Lighbringer fan. Simon Vance also is the narrator of that series and does a amazing job with it. I personally found Lighbringer to be a big step up from Night Angel and look forward to seeing how it all concludes later this year!

If I understand you correctly you are saying that you have read the first nine safehold books and were wondering if the tenth book (which is the mosy recent release) is good and if ther is blimp warfare and if it was executed well? Well me and Briar King both had big problems with the tenth novel. We both felt it was much slower than standard safehold and was mainly characters talking for countless pages. I, personally, had a problem that he ends the book in a cliffhanger. Blimp warfare is still in its beginning stages and consists of supply drops and dropping bombs. No one else has developed aerial power yet so there isn't really a need for him to go into such details at this point.

The movie definitely looked great. It seemed more natural looking than a lot of other movies that employ a lot of CGI.

Probably when she enters into the bounty hunter bar and nobody takes her seriously (at first) and then all the craziness that happened afterwards. The scene that I can picture most clearly though is the final scene as she stands on the edge of that dropoff, lifting her flaming sword up to the sky in challenge as the crowd chants her name. I have a few other books to check off, but after that I am signing up for Kindle Comixoligy. First month is free and then $4.99/month afterwards I can read the Alita Battle Angel original series and two sequel series. I really want to see how it ends. What was your favorite scene?

@hoiditthroughthegrapevine Are you still working on Blood and Bone? Interested in what you think because I loved the first 4/5th but thought he really dropped the ball with the ending. I loved the jungle setting and the Heart of Darkness vibe. I wish there were more fantasy books with a jungle setting.

I absolutely loved this movie! The visuals were breathtaking, I felt that the love story was well done, and it flowed really well. Their were only a couple of problems for me. I felt like it was a big story that they tried to cram to much in; for the most part it worked but there were a few parts I wish they would explore more in depth. The source material is coming from a manga. The story doesn't end in a cliff hanger, but it just sort of feels like a pause in the story. There is so much more that needs to happen and be resolved. It kind of feels similar to The Way of Kings if that paints a better picture for you. There is still the war and a ton of other stuff that needs to be resolved in Stormlight Archives. Evidently the movie isn't doing as well as expected and the sequel might not happen. I will probably be checking out the manga anyways so I will be getting the ending one way or another. I haven't been this floored by a movie since I saw Along with the Gods. This is a thread for anyone wanting to discuss the movie.

A blogger I follow compared the old and new covers of Wheel of Time in a way that I thought was fun http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2011/07/wheel-of-time-art-off-part-1.html?m=1 http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2011/07/wheel-of-time-art-off-part-2.html?m=1

It is about the Bataan Death March and the raid to rescue the survivors at the Cabanatuan camp. It is part of the Japanese and American conflict in WW2

I usually stick to Science Fiction/Fantasy but I am currently reading a nonfiction book on the Korean War (focusing on the Chosin Reservoir campaign) called On Dangerous Ground by Hampton Sides. The author wrote one of my favorite nonfiction books ever called Ghost Soldiers, but unfortunately his other books didn't have a subject matter that interested me. I just discovered this book just came out a few months ago and really like it! The author does a good job of setting things up and weaving in these really great primary sources. I'm learning a lot!

Yes. Thanks! I knew I could count on the hive mind. You guys are the best!

I have nothing more to add to your complaints except that I need to apply to be David Webers editor; evidently there is no expectation to do anything. Interesting theory about Harrison. I thought the leak was the factory owner who blew himself up but can see that it might of gone deeper. They mentioned that particular incident in the future books occasionally and there were leaks that they attributed to other things, but I can see your logic.

I need help from the Hive Mind! I'm about 90% sure its a Sanderson quote (if its not I'm going to be embarrassed). I think Stormlight Archives, but not sure about that. Anyways the quote is about the key to happiness isn't desperately clinging to individual moments, but living a life so that such moments keep happening.

Hah so far the only thing that was glorious was the Dragon attack during the slash lizard hunting expedition. I feel like the author was afraid to introduce the new generation of characters and felt like this book was needed. When readera started Off Armageddon Reef all the characters were new, so just about everything in this book was unnecessary because we could of grown confortable with new cast without much difficulty. Also the fates of the "old guard" could be casual mentions in conversation in the following book. Edit: I finished it! I'm actually really mad about the book too. If it ended with the inner circle talking about the downward spiral of Siddarmarck (they just can't catch a break can they?) I would of been ok with it. I would of said that every author has a book in the series that didn't work for me, just wait for the next one, and hope that it improves. But to spend hour after hour listening to basically nothing happening and then the author drops a bomb shell and ends the book?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? NO COOL! Now that I've vented my nerd rage what was the theory, you mentioned earlier, that you wanted to discuss @Briar King?

About 20 hours in with 12 more to go. You were right about this one being different. There is definitely more sitting around and talking and I've been finding my attention wondering far more than the standard Safehold novel. I can't even imagine actually reading the print version rather than the audiobook.

@Silverblade5 I've worked night shift at two different places for a combined approximately 1.5 years. There's some pros to it, but I never got used to the sleeping schedule. I got enough sleep to function but it always seemed less restful. Our bodies operate on circadian rhythms and the light, which comes from the sun, is a big part of that. I hope you can eventually work your way up to a better shift or those rhythms don't affect you as it did me. Best of luck!

Malazan news is kind of slow at the moment, but I had another question that we could discuss: What is the most underrated malazan storyline? Or I suppose another way to look at is what is one storyline that many seem to hate, but you thought was pretty good? For me its a the Redmask section in Reapers Gale. I understand that people don't like it because it was kind of pointless. It is a side story that got more time spent on it than it warrented. But it incorporated some ideas that would explained more in depth in the following two books. Lots of great battle scenes, various other moments, and a surprising twist at the end. I'm not saying its my favorite section of the series, but I enjoyed it.

I recently tried Broken Earth again and just have admit it isn't for me. It's a shame because I can tell the writer is very talented, but as you said its just too melancholy for me. It opens up with a child being beaten to death by the father's bare hands and a girl being abused by her parents before a stranger takes her away. I just couldn't take anymore. I thought I was a calloused reader, but I just started feeling down while reading it. I'm in line for her hundred thousand kingdoms series so perhaps that will be more to my taste.

I don't want to see a bloated book. I want it meaner and leaner. Don't get sidetracked and lets see some real plot progress!

Question for the malazan audiobook fans: What's your opinion on the Kharkanus narrators? I've heard mixed things for the Forge of Darkness one and bad things about the Fall of Light. It's hard for me to find for myself based on the small sample you can listen to. I ask because, as some of you may know, I have my problems with the Kharkanus books. Sometimes switching to the audiobooks can really help...but sometimes not. It might be worth it if some of you can vouch for the narrators.

On number 3 of one copy. Checkouts are for three weeks at a time, but some people are considerate and return it early if they finish before its due. I also might get lucky if a person doesn't download it (when it's their turn) in two days it goes to the next person in line. Taking forever right! I keep hearing the siren song of Weber with both Honor Harington and Safehold that keep calling me to its shore! Edit: Great news @Briar King I'm still number three in line through the Overdrive App, but the library got another copy through the Cloudlibrary app and I was the first one to request it. I now have it downloaded and will start it tomorrow. I want to get to a good stopping point on the book I am currently listening to and that should be today. I'm excited to jump back in.

Do you have any favorite authors that have dissappeared from social media and you have no idea about the status of the series or writing career? Discuss and console each other here. For me the one that comes right away to my mind is Marc Turner. He is three books into a planned six book series and his last update on his website and on twitter were from February and March of 2017. I emailed him about a year ago and he very politely said if there was anything to report than he would do so. Even when Sanderson does something to frustrate me (like writing Magic novellas) I just appreciate the open communication and transparency. I imagine I will probably get some Rothfuss mentions if anyone decides to weigh in on this...
