Second Annual Sanderson Tournament
Cartographer7 replied to Patar's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Nohadon. Combat character vs non-combat character. Honestly I was pretty unhappy with that page. She's model strutting into a tent, not because she has a reason to do so in universe, but to show off the pretty woman to the readers. It broke my immersion pretty badly. I think as a character she deserved better. -

Second Annual Sanderson Tournament

Are we fighting to the first death, or to permadeath? Because Kelsier wins in the first case, as he's a complete combat monster. However, I don't think he could figure out how to permanently kill Megan before she manages to get the single kill on Kelsier. I'm going to flip a coin. Megan -

I know, right? I don't know why, but I really only enjoy the romances in Brandon's books, and the ones I like best tend to be arranged marriages. I dunno what that says about me. Anyways, Wax. In a more drawn out fight in a different setting, TenSoon would probably win. But in an area-ish battle, Wax's mobility and ranged attacks give him a solid edge. -

Shallan. She's a quick thinker, inventive, and even downright devious at times. Renarin has his strengths, but he seems rather unused to conflict of any kind. He's smart too, but he's the "I'm going to sit and think this through" kind of smart, not the "I'm going to out-think you in a moment's notice" kind of smart. I don't think his meager combat training will make up the difference. Shallan's going to run circles around him. -

Dalinar win the combat (I think? Not sure how either would manage to kill the other). He's also one of the most compelling characters I've read in a long time: It's refreshing to see the "can I be the hero everyone needs me to be?" character arc for someone who isn't under 25. I love exploring the perspectives of someone who, instead of trying to make their mark on the world, has already made it, and finds it at times both a help and hindrance as he moves in a new direction. We've had a thousand stories of people who come up from nothing, but what about someone who stood atop the world, and discovered his footing was not as sure as he thought? It's nice to have an authority figure who has their own story, rather than just being a staple feature in the story of some maverick or young person. (I mean, he is that, but he's also way more.) -
Be careful though, I hear some of the cookies around here have Hemalurgic spikes in them.

Source? Note that I didn't call it "the survival shard". I just provided the one hint I've seen for that shard verbatim (or nearly so). I agree that jumping to conclusions about how central this "hide and survive" aspect is to the shard could lead us in the wrong direction, I'm just not sure why you think I'm doing that.

The only hints I'm aware of are catalogued on the Known Shards section of the Coppermind's Shard page. In brief, the hints are: There's a shard that just wants to hide/survive There's a shard which is not attached to a planet Odium has splintered at least one more shard than we've seen.

I like Terry better as a character, but I've been treating this as a combat tournament, so I'm gonna stick to that. Cody is much better armed and trained than Terry; it's not much of a fight. -

I vote Breeze, because as sad a thought as it is, I think Breeze could talk Spook into letting him win. Breeze is that good, and Spook is that open to the influence of others. -

Vasher. At first, the only way I could see for this fight to end was for Vasher to pick up Nightblood and let him drain his breaths away. Vasher is powerful, but I don't think he can unmake Nightblood, at least not on short notice. But I think Vasher just picks up Nightblood, who happily helps him fight the rest of the tournament. (This is partially to have fun thinking outside the box, partially to prevent Nightblood from winning the rest of the tournament just by being indestructible). -

A new thread is the way to go. I think it will allow people to jump in much easier. Also, if we wanted to do 64 without teams, you could run 2 fights at once, allowing people to vote/pontificate on them simultaneously. Bloodsealer x1 (did we ever get a name for him?) Eshonai x1 Susebron x3 -
I assume by "Investure" you mean "Connection". (Feel free to correct me if I've assumed incorrectly.) The Medallions do make use of Connection, but I don't think it's something that's easily transferable. It's set up to connect the user in a way that allows them to use the medallion's other properties, not provide a "choose a new connection as needed" ability. So it couldn't have let him connect with Wayne's gold and tap the stored healing. EDIT: Actually, I can't remember which medallion he had in that scene. The translation medallion did use Connection to function, so that makes it more plausible as a solution. However, it was built specifically to give you connection to the place you're currently at. I think you'd have to do some fancy feruchemical hacking to make it connect you to anything else.

Allow me to repeat my question: How are we deciding which version of a character is in play? Susebron's fights go very differently depending on when we're plucking him out of the book. Dilaf x2 Eshonai x2 Miles x1 -
