I've started Good Omens and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel. They're both really good so far.

I enjoyed Good Omens, but I SUPER enjoyed Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Once you finish the book, I also recommend the BBC miniseries of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. I think it's available on Netflix, at least in the US.

  2. I should be all right for most weeknights except Mondays, and Saturday nights will also not work for me once I get settled into my new job in these next couple of weeks. It's looking like Thursdays work for most people who've posted so far, and they should for me too.

  3. I found a Great Horned Owl today, completely by accident! I mean, yes, I was out deliberately looking for birds, but not in a place where I was expecting to find an owl... Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures because there were a bunch of branches and twigs in the way, but it was still a neat experience! I never would have spotted him if the trees hadn't been completely bare of leaves--it made his silhouette really obvious.

  4. I'm hoping I will not bring down the wrath of the mods by necro-ing my own art thread, but after a looooong hiatus, I have some new art to share!

I decided to do something different and try my hand at drawing some birds. So far I've only done two, but I'm quite happy with how they turned out.

Townsend's Warbler, a small songbird found in western North America:

    Spoiler

First I drew him with my usual colored pencils...

Then I decided to have a go at making a digital version in Adobe Photoshop:

Blackburnian Warbler, another small songbird, but this one's found in eastern North America. In terms of visual appeal, I think it is the single prettiest bird I've ever seen.

For this one, the base I used was a photo I took myself in May 2018 in northern Ohio:

When you try to teach yourself to cuss more like the various characters throughout Sanderson's books. I am currently calling everyone a "Scudding Cremling" because to me it's pretty great. (If anyone has any suggestions for the phrase "For goodness' sake" I would love to hear them, I've been pondering it for a couple days now)

What about "For Stormfather's sake!" ?

  6. Got some more bird photos to share! :D

From a local cemetery that lots of birds love (4 photos):

    Spoiler

Townsend's Solitaire. He might not be much to look at, but he's a very pretty singer.

Downy Woodpecker female. This is North America's smallest species of woodpecker. :)

Red-tailed Hawk. I only got this one shot before he flew off because he didn't like me looking at him.

From BYU campus, where I participated in a "Christmas Bird Count," a fun bit of citizen science that helps keep track of long-term trends in bird populations (4 photos):

    Spoiler

Woodhouse's Scrub-jay with an acorn. Might be my best photo of a scrub-jay to date.

Orange-crowned Warbler. I swear, this is the dumbest bird name of all dumb bird names. You can never see the orange crown unless you're literally holding the bird in your hand.
