Elend. Such a cool character, from scholar, to emperor, to mistborn. He's be given so many roles throughout his life, not all of them by his choosing, but he remains a great and moral person, despite growing up amongst the notorably corrupt court and family. He had to do so many thing hard things, and he never lost sight of his morals and general goodness. -

Kaladin. I really liked seeing him confront his depression and othe mental issues particularly, but I also liked his character, as well as his arcs. While Wayne is cool, and I love him and his natural affinity to hats, Kal is just amazing and cool, in different ways to Wayne, but still amazingly cool with a tragic backstory to boot. However, I will give Wayne points for smiling. This is something that Kaladin needs lessons in. Do you think Wayne would be happy to teach? I'm sure Hoid would be willing to get involved, even if it's just to laugh at how bemused Kaladin is with Wayne. -

Could you have it grow stronger/better until a certain age (like 18 or whatever the coming of age ag is), and after that, you grow more powerful, but it isn't noticeable as it grows in such small amounts, so the rest you improve through hard work and determination? Just an idea, but it could work...

Nice system! I really liked how it took a much loved cliche, and made it different. I added some questions you might want to ask yourself, surronding the magic system itself, and its interactions with culture (I find this to be an integral and interesting part of magic, but if you just want to create the magic, that's fine), as I find that questions are often good ways to deepen and improve a system. You don't have to answer me on these, but they might be handy to think about (hopefully) Magic Is everybody born with magic, or is it just a select few? If so, is there any way for non-magic users to get the magic (e.g. By killing somebody)? What are the marks made of? Is any science trying to replicate them, and can they be replicated by humans at all? Do you have to make the secondary choice at 15? Can you delay the choice? What happens if somebody is unconscious/acomatosed during this period? Is it simply a level that you need to reach, and can choose any time later? What happens if somebody is born with a disability that causes them not to have arms? Do they still get the powers? Are the powers genetic, or based only off parents powers? E.g. If a grandparent had earth, but your parents had fire and water, could you still get earth? Are the powers given through your genes, and if so, are there mutations in genes? Cultural inetractions Are any certain types favoured for different jobs? You mentioned that water reaches and artistic level, so do they tend to be artists? What happens if somebody randomly gets another tier (ie, they've killed somebody)? Does this make catching killers easier? Is any elements discriminated against or thought as useless by different cultures? Is there discrimination against people who have lost their arms? Is science/equivalent study trying to replicate the marks? Do people kill others to gain their secondary powers, as the powers that they could get, they couldn't recieve because of their heritage? General Notes I found it a bit odd that your power is only improved by getting older, as I feel from a storytelling perspective, it feels like we're being cheated, as characters don't really have to work hard to get more power. I think also felt unclear as to if they get more skilful as they get older, automatically, as you said that with more power, water gets more precision. This was the main thing that made me tick about the system, but the rest was really good.

Khriss. She is one fabulous lady (just look at the first page she's in in White Sand). Plus, she's (probably) the most knowledgeable about the Cosmere, and is just awesome. -
Thanks! I like coming up with interesting one line pitches so that when I recommend books to people I don't ramble, my Terry Pratchett ones are the best in my humble opinion (a bunch of monarchists release a dragon), but Warbreaker and SA are harder because there isn't just one main plot. Also, if you're interested, Elantris is 'Tolkien's elves turn into zombies, and Rome wants to invade'.

Welcome to the shard! *waves* it's your friendly summoner of creationspren here to welcome you aboard. As a forewarning, avoid all cookies/baked goods that are offered to you, as they are from a questionable group. (They're spiked) As for what you should read next... I'd say Warbreaker or Mistborn. If you want to read something more lighthearted, I'd go for Warbreaker, whereas my one line pitch for potential readers of mistborn is "mission impossible set after Sauron has been in power for 100 years". But, all of them are great If you read Warbreaker, watch out for a familiar face or two (well, a face and a metaphorical face).

I doubt that it's an actual law that you can't arrest a shardbearer, but more of something that you don't do unless you really don't care if the accused escapes, so it's just treated as an unspoken rule. It may be that he was worried that Dalinar would go along with what came, not escaping and such because he was quite an honourable person who wouldn't escape. But yeah... strange...

I think that if Kaladin was going to have an issue with using shardplate/blades that were alive, but weren't Syl, he'd have had though patterns about how he was only going to us Syl, because she was different or because he trusts her. I concede that if shardplate that is alive cannot change, it is highly unlikely that Kaladin will use it due to the nature of his fighting style. But, there is a possibility that shardplate can be altered (which I personally think is likely, but who really knows, right), in which case, I think there will be more of a chance that Kaladin will use the shardplate.

Kelsier, I mean, he was the best. He was always so positive, and added some lighthearted moments to some pretty dark moments. He had a great father-daughter relationship with Vin, and he always had hope that there might be a better world. Then there was the dichotomy between light and dark in his character (sorry, I'm a lit student, we enjoy being somewhat pretentious) and how he instigated change, and became such a figure in the mythology of the world. Plus, Megan always came off as a bit of the cliche tough girl to me, and I never got hugely into her character. -
Ugh, I know! Just...timezones... They can be most frustrating can't they, seriously I'm right near the date line, so most people tend to be sleeping when I come on. Most frustrating. Also, when you refer to how all KR chose to use more bulky armour, I assume you are talking about the plate that is being circulated within society. Because if that's the case, then it is not certain that is how it was originally was, because you could have said the same for shardblades, as they were all swords, but that was only the case because that was their original form. But anyway, who even knows. Only how many more years till we find out? Who even knows. Many. (Not that I'm complaining about how quickly they're being written)

However, they usually use their abilities instinctively earlier on in their KR careers, as seen particularly with Shallan, however, as we have progressed through the character arcs, we learn how abilities are formed. With Shallan, she instinctively summoned a Shardblade and didn't know what was going on, as well as how it was happening, however, as we progress through Shallan's character, we were shown how she summoned a Shardblade, and Shallan gained an understanding about how she did it. I think a similar thing will happen with most other abilities as well, such as shardplate and soul casting, it's not so much a question of if, but of when. This is an integral part of the the writing style to me, and I think it ver unlikely that shardplate will simply pop up with no proper explanation on how it works. It may not be an outright explanation directly on how shardplate is formed, what it does and how it works, but I believe that Kaladin (and other characters who use shardplate) will be able to form a basic understanding on how it works, if only by observation.

It may not be that he chooses not to use it, but more that he can't use it. My guess is that once you reach a certain point in your naheal bond, you can use shardplate, much like how you had to pass a certain point to use a Shardblade. Plus, I would think that in order for Kaladin to choose that he doesn't want to use shardplate, he would be informed that he can have shardplate, as well as how to make it, but he chooses to decline instead. So, you would find out, or at least get an inkling about how it works. So, it may be that the characters simply progress to the point that they can make shardplate in book 4. Yet he has no problem with using his shardspear/blade. If he was going to reject shardplate due to that, he wouldn't be accepting of the shardspear. I think that if he is going to reject it, it will be because of his fighting style (he doesn't really seem to wear armour much, even before become a KR.)

Did we get a WoB about creating shardplate? He's RAFO'd the question about the relation between spren and shardplate a lot in the past. I thought it was just a widely accepted theory. Unless I just totally missed something... Also, what makes you say that shardplate won't be able to fit the users preferances? Just because it is a different type of spren, doesn't necessarily mean that it can't be changed. I really see no reason to not think that shardplate cannot be altered, and if it were made up of spren, I should think that it would actually be easier to change, given that they have a degree of sentience.

TenSoon. I found Wax to be quite a plain protagonist compared to others written, and TenSoon was fun to read about. -
Anticipated Orders (Orders you are interested in)
StormyQueen replied to Xaklys's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm really interested in seeing the more traditional Edgedancer develop, as Lift doesn't seem to completley fit what little we've been told about what they were like. I really like their second ideal of 'I will remember those who have been forgotten', as it kind of reminds me of history (which I'm really into) and I would be interested to see what their other ideals are. But then again, I'm interested in what all of the ideals are, they just all sound so cool and signify so many moral differences and goals. Plus, then I can better figure out what order I'd fit into.... Also, the Elsecallers seem really interesting, as they appear to interact the most with Shadesmar, and I think it would be cool to see how humans and spren who aren't bonded interact. Plus, they have Jasnah, and as a character she interests me (just a bit of an understatement), so I think that the traits involved in the Elsecallers will be interesting to me.- 26 replies
