If they're from Elantris, why do they end up on Scadrial? Also, where is this mentioned?

The answer to that is a bit of a spoiler if you haven’t read Mistborn Secret History yet.

The Ire are on Scadrial because they know the final showdown between Preservation and Ruin is coming up, and they’re trying to claim the power of a full shard for themselves.  They created an orb which increases the connection of the user to align themselves with Preservation so they could take up the power when Leras died.  They need the connection boost since as non-Scadrians they don’t have any Preservation in them.  However they had the misfortune of running into Kelsier who pretended to be Ruin, stole the orb, and when Leras finally bit it used the orb to take over Preservation as a cognitive shadow.  Since he wasn’t fully alive he wasn’t able to go toe to toe with Ruin, unlike Vin when she Ascended.

  2. I’m just doing a reread of Arcanum Unbounded, so I just read through White Sands the other night, and am reading Edgedancer now.  I saw something this reread I missed previously.  In the beginning when lift is first entering Yeddaw she causes a Lift-style scene while stealing pancakes and getting past the gate guard.  Right before she escapes into the city she’s atop a wagon filled with tallew grain.  The officer chasing her says the grain glowed, flowed like water out of the wagon and over the cliff edge, and afterwards there was a strange black dust on the ground.

    Quote

”It was the strangest thing she’d ever seen.  The  pile of grain became like a liquid, flowing out of the cart even though the incline was shallow.  It ... well, it glowed softly as it flowed out and rained down into the city.”

And then after she made her escape

    Quote

”Cart secure, Hauka stepped up to the ledge.  The girl was nowhere to be seen.  Storms.  Had she been some kind of Soren?  Hauka searched again but saw nothing, though there was this strange black dust at her feet. It blew away in the wind”

This sounds an awful lot like Sandmastery, except instead of Invested glowing white sand turned black, it’s glowing golden grain which turns black.  The easy explanation is Lift just made the grain “Awesome” and it slid out of the cart, but why the direct comment on strange black dust?  It’s been awhile since I read this, or Oathbringer..... are there other examples of her making things other than her own body Awesome?  Is this just a scenario where the magic systems are different, but the end effect is similar?  Note, she didn’t use the grain to help her fall after going over the cliff, instead using Wyndle and self-healing Investiture to slow her fall and recover.

  3. I was reading through some threads last night and found the WoB where he mentions that all of the cosmere planets are in the same Dwarf Galaxy, and as such they share visible objects in space with each other.

Then I was rereading BoM today.

During the attack/robbery on the train Wax comments on the Red Rip, "By the starlight - which was bright tonight, with no clouds and the Red Rip low on the horizon....".  I never noticed it before, but can we assume that the Red Rip as visible from Scadrial is the same thing as "Taln's Scar" as visible from Roshar?  It's certainly not important, just nice to see even little connections between the worlds.

EDIT: added BoM spoiler tags. :)

  4. Assuming that they're Elantrians (which is what popped into my mind when I read about them.... though not to the fullest extent that you all have. ;)) are they wanting to take hold a Shard just to take hold of a Shard? Do you think they're trying to take an intact Shard as part of a Gambit to reassemble the Devotion and Dominion Shards?

  5. I was wondering what would happen if you gave a primer cube to Miles Hundredlives, or any other compounder and he started compounding while holding it. when you compound you create a new metal that only you can use. so what effect would a compounder have on the primer cube? the primer cube works by gaining the allomatic power that is being used by the person holding it. so the real question is what happens when you use an internal metal on a primer cube. I ,with no evidence whatsoever, think that it would give the borrowed power to everyone in it radius of effect. So if a thug used the primer cube then everybody in the vicinity would become a thug. this power would have greatest effect in hospitals where a compounder could use his powers to heal everybody. the inspiration for this theory comes from the end of bands of mourning where a member of the set mentions to Mr. Suit that one of the other members is activating the mechanism that makes the southern airship lighter. this implies that ferucemical powers can be extended to intimate objects, and possibly to groups of people.

It's my understanding that compounding doesn't create a metal that only you can use, rather that burning a metalmind filled with your own stored attribute allowed you to release the Investiture at a ~10x profit.

  6. Just a thought to bolster the theory that shardplate is live spren stuck in the form of shardplate.  Remember the interlude with the researchers studying flamespren?  They specifically point out that once measured or recorded the flame spren remained in the same shape.  Once they destroyed the figures they wrote down the flamespren returned to it's baseline changyness (that's a technical term, you understand).

I'm not married to a particular method of plate being created.  Perhaps it was a completely natural evolution of the Nahel bond.  Perhaps it was an engineered creation by one group like the Bondsmiths (though given that there were apparently only three Bondsmiths and a lot of KR with plate they might find themselves a bit busy).  Perhaps it was a collaboration between the Highspren and some engineering.

The point I come to is if part of the process of creating the shardplate (whatever that process might be) involved defining how the spren would act as shardplate...... "you will adjust to fit your wearer, you will absorb stormlight to fit yourself", etc....... then the plate could still be living spren which was defined into a specific shape/purpose.

I'm assuming the more esoteric functions of the plate seen in the flashbacks were because of the Nahel bonded spren interfacing with the defined spren of the plate.  So while bonded spren may have been involved in the making, and the increased awesomeness of "old" plate, the plate's continued existence wasn't dependent on the bonded spren continuing to live.  Think of it like a car.  The plate is the body, the suspension, the wheels, the seats, etc.  The bonded spren is the engine.  Take the engine out and the car still exists, but now it needs a different form of propulsion.  In the case of the plate it's the infused gemstones, vs the KR themselves fueling it with stormlight.

And that makes me wonder about something else.  Did the modern users of the plate somehow add the gem slots inside the plate in order to power it, or were they already there?  We know Kaladin can power plate directly based on the duel scene, however just powering even a helmet drained him completely in a few minutes.  Perhaps the KR ran the plate with the gemstones, and they topped them off as needed.  Just a thought.
