  1. I'd like to introduce my pet project Metalborn.io

Metalborn.io is a character generator for Mistborn Era 2. Minor spoilers for abilities and characters revealed up to Bands of Mourning.

Just input a name and gender and find out what Metallic Arts your character can use! I've shared it on /r/Mistborn yesterday, and 3700 characters have already been generated :o

If you're unhappy with the default probabilities, there is also a page where you can tweak them! (Characters generated with non-default probabilities cannot be saved.)

This is also a fully open source Haskell and Elm project for anyone interested.

Please let me know if you find any issue!

  2. My take is that there is no Shard actually present on First of the Sun in the same sense as Cultivation being present on Roshar. And that "one of the 16 Shards of Adonalsium is represented and involved in First of the Sun" is the same thing as saying "Paalm represents the involvement of one of the non-Harmony Shards" and "Only Harmony is present on Scadrial".

    Questioner

Do you have any idea which book of yours might make it to the movie theaters first?

    Brandon Sanderson

Which one might make it to the movie theaters first? So right now it's going to be a race because I would say that a lot of things are kind of equal footing, because most of my options that we have for films lapsed last year and then we resold them. So we're kind of starting from scratch on everything. We sold Legion again, we sold Mistborn again, and we sold The Emperor's Soul shortly before. (Crowd ooh'd and aah'd at that one) And then we sold Steelheart like on Friday. Steelheart had been optioned and they let it lapse. Mistborn had been and Legion had been, so we've got four new companies basically working on it, but every time we do this my profile as a writer has raised to the point that we get a better crowd, if that makes sense. Like the Steelheart deal I'm really excited about. I love the producer, he's the guy that did...did you guys see Real Steel? Did you ever see that, the Richard Matheson story? The guy who did that. I loved that, I thought it was...it was one of those movies I watched expecting it to be done, and it was great. But he also did the Night at the Museum stuff, and things like that, and so I'm really excited about that. But the Mistborn script treatments are excellent, the best treatments I've gotten. What that means is that's what you write as a producer to give to a screenwriter to then write the screenplay, and then after that you get stars attached, and then after that someone finally gives you money and you make the film. So we're still a long way away, but the treatments are really good. And then, you know, the guys who have The Emperor's Soul are super enthusiastic. They're DMG, they made the Ironman films with Marvel, they're super enthusiastic and they went down the Cosmere rabbit hole. They bought it and then they're like, let me see this deleted scene about this guy named Hoid. So I gave it to them and they're like, "wait a minute", and they started reading everything. And so they've come back to me and they're like "sooo, um, the Sanderson cinematic universe...". So I don't know what's going to happen with that, but there's lots of discussion about things like that. And they've been talking to the Mistborn guys, and so... But this is all very new, meaning we're at the preliminary stages of all of it. There's like, nothing I can officially even announce other than "These people have bought these rights, these people have bought these rights". Maybe we'll get something made eventually. I've gotten really close before and it hasn't happened so, who knows.

Most genetic differences between skaa and noble were exaggerated, even fabricated, by noble culture as justification for their perceived superiority. Height differences due to nutrition, 'intelligence' due to education and societal expectations, fertility due to common factors in urbanization. The LR did try some minor tinkering, to be played out over time through genetics, but in the end these changes weren't very successful.

  5. Going off of Glys's "He doesn't see what is, but of what is to come", my theory is that Truthwatchers have the same kind of visions, but of the present. Hence their name.

And also, I think that's Truthwatchers' and Renarin's manifestation of Illumination. I don't think they can lightweave illusions. They have visions instead. This has been my theory for a long time but showing how Bondsmiths have fundamentally different uses of Adhesion and Cohesion reinforces my conviction. Spiritual Illumination? ...

The problem with my theory is that none of the other surges we have seen are involuntary...

    Question

(Paraphrased) How did you design a magic system to fit multiple time periods?

    Brandon Sanderson
Mistborn’s a bit of a special case, since I’d planned it all from the beginning. So I was able to plan things and hold them back, knowing that I could use them later. That part of the whole idea behind not having all of the metals get discovered in the first books, and holding back this idea of Twinborn and things like this… though that was a little bit of a happy accident. I was mostly going to focus on Savants.

Why do the Twinborn in Alloy of Law have only one feruchemical power, when all previous feruchemists, in spite of breeding programs, could use all the metals? (from travyl) Or were Ferrings always part of the system and we just didn't meet them in Mistborn? (my addition)

    Brandon Sanderson
The Ferrings are a new development since Mistborn, as the Feruchemists have been interbreeding with the Allomancers. Basically, the Allomancy genes interfere with the Feruchemistry genes, breaking it down and creating the limitations we see in Alloy of Law. (His response to this was really fun—he found it a very perceptive question, and enjoyed talking about it. I wish I'd had my recorder handy so I could give you the full transcript instead of the boiled-down version.)

    Here's a relevant WoB!

Unfortunately I failed to find the one I am thinking of so take that with a grain of salt but I remember Brandon suggesting he originally hadn't planned for Twinborn but got very lucky thinking of it for Wax & Wayne as it turned out more awesome than what he'd outlined. So it could be part of the explanation. Even if it was I think Brandon's worked out a really solid explanation anyway.

Has that been confirmed? It's very, very likely, but I can't remember if it has been stated outright.

Anyway, from what I can remember of that letter, the writer seems to write as if they themselves weren't a shard.

Surprisingly I didn't find outright confirmation but just short of it.

    Is Hoid a dragon?

    Brandon Sanderson
Oh I will give you a RAFO card.  Have you read Dragonsteel? Don’t read it, it’s bad. He is one of the oldest people in the cosmere, but he is not the oldest. The person he is writing a letter to is indeed older than he is.

Can a person in Shardplate be Rioted or Soothed? What about Seeked?
Could a Coinshot, in a fight, damage Shardplate?

    Brandon Sanderson
Frost is almost certainly the oldest by a small amount. After that, Hoid.

You know Hoid's Letter, that is in The Way of Kings, it is given to a dragon right?

    Question
    Is he immortal?

    Brandon Sanderson
Functionally, meaning he doesn't age but can be killed.

And it is a he and not a she?

    Brandon Sanderson
    It is a he.

  11. Different kinds of bonds/oaths grant different kinds of powers. Other orders don't need WoK because the kind of bonds/oaths that WoK makes you follow are Bondsmith-material codes. I was not saying that Squires follow the codes. I was saying that they have a bond/loyalty/informal oaths to a Radiant.

  12. It's a very good theory, I actually don't recall seeing anyone associate the in-world Way of Kings with bondsmithdom (though I'm sure that happened). One of the comments also pertinently raises the suspicious book that made that neither gender can both fight and read.

I think it has more direct connection with following The Codes or any honor code being a form of bond/oath (than with Connection, although I'm sure it's related), as those seem to be what grants powers on Roshar. We know Seon bonds would grant powers on Roshar, bonding a spren which requires oaths grants powers, bonding a honorblade grants powers*, and it seems similar to how Squires gain power by bonding or loyalty (oaths of sort) with their Radiant, also explaining why Windrunners have a squire bonus. (One of Jezrien's two attributes is Leading, and becoming a Windrunner seems to require a personality that inspires followers.)

*As a tangentially related addendum, I don't know how much people have focused on this but it seems reasonable to say that Honorblades can grant so much power without Oaths is because wielding one signs you up to the Oathpact, whatever its implications are.... scary.

So, you can make a case that Autonomy's intent primarily has to do with freeing people from the influence of Shards: making up new religions to take them away from their Shards, Shattering Shards, and promoting the abandonment of magic. This is similar, but not identical, to Odium's goal, where he wants to be the only Shard left in the cosmere. Autonomy wants to go a step farther, and have there be no Shards, so they could be working together to kill every other Shard first, and then see who survives the last battle between the two of them. Another name for this interpretation of Autonomy's intent might be 'Free Will,' which could be opposed to a possible interpretation of Dominion where the Shard is in charge of everything.

I think this is exactly what's happening. It explains why Bavadin blocks entry into Taldain (as Shards may want to influence other planets through worldhopping envoys), and why he involves himself much more offworld than on Taldain, according to Khriss's essays if I recall right. He gets involved, to reduce all Shardic involvement. I like the idea that Odium is a red herring for Autonomy as an end-game or later-game villain.

  14. Brandon also gets help from all kinds of people, and I remember him accepting the help of someone on reddit who said they had a Physics Ph. D or something.

Most amazing thread I've ever read. I googled "harmonium oxide" thinking I was a genius and that made me stumble upon that thread, lol.

But, here's the problem: there's extra Ruin. Some of Preservation is in mankind, so if he doesn't physically manifest this extra Ruin somewhere, he won't be in balance. So, he throws in an extra Ruin proton and Ruin electron; this very reactive valence electron. As long as he manifests enough harmonium, the extra Ruin is there in the environment.

First of all to you, I sincerely apologize for not reading the entirety of your post.  I sometimes shard at work and the afternoon was busier than I anticipated.  I glanced through your post, got excited because of the new WoB that I think sums up a question we've all had about a missing bead of Lerasium, and posted without thinking.  Mea culpa @yurisses!

TLR was a fullborn - all the powers of feruchemy and allomancy which he could compound.  IIRC, there's a WoB that also said TLR augmented his sDNA to make himself more powerful.  So I don't know what purpose a bead of Lerasium would serve him, unless this is the premise of the titular "The Lost Metal."

Would you suggest TLR perhaps learned how to do something with Lerasium that Hoid had likewise figured out?

Secondly, I'm not sure we can conclude anything else with the new WoB - Hoid used the bead to become an allomancer.  How else can we read Brandon's quote?

No worries, I hope my wording didn't make me sound angry, because I don't mind at all. (truth be told I wanted to discuss Hoid's use of the bead too but was on the fence about making a thread so you gave me an opportunity to merge the two subjects)

My suggestion is that Lerasium feruchemy/hemalurgy can probably make you a stronger allomancer and/or other cool things we can't even imagine. The way Brandon worded his RAFOs suggests that Lerasium feruchemy is important and cool... And yep, my belief is that both Hoid and TLR used Lerasium feruchemically and figured out cool stuff with it. Heck, maybe even Kel was doing it.

As for the new WoB, it could be misdirection, "you have seen him use allomancy in other books, but I won't tell you if he got it by eating the bead or other means, that's your answer!" The wording of the old WoB also suggests Brandon is trying to avoid the question and misdirect us hard to leave him be on the subject of Lerasium feruchemy, but maybe that's confirmation bias on my part... Although it is definitely something we have seen Brandon do a bunch of times.

  16. 29 minutes ago, VirtuousTraveller said:

This WoB was from his signing at Herald Washington Library on December 3rd, so I think this pretty much settles it.  He used it to become an allomancer.

AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT I THINK YOU'RE SAYING BRANDON! =)

First of all, I'm not talking about the bead Hoid stole but the one TLR took for himself and held onto. Check out the quoted section in the opening post for more details. (That said, it's technically possible the two are one and the same. Hoid would have stolen TLR's bead that he kept near the well. edit: I now doubt that this is the case, or that Rashek's bead was the one Elend ate.. The WoB's wording suggests TLR owned at least three beads, one of which for personal use. "The Lord Ruler took one [Lerasium bead] for himself and he left others there to use if he needed them.")

Second, we already had an old WoB saying something very similar, and coincidentally, I had something talking about this bead in my notes, too, and I don't agree with your conclusion:

    Quote

    Hoid's use of Lerasium:

    1. Hoid’s bead was—He originally got it because he wanted to be an Allomancer.

    2. BS suggests Lerasium can grant the power of many shards (though he could also simply say that Hoid has the power of Preservation)

    3. "It rewrites your spiritual DNA, and there are ways to do really cool things with lerasium that I don't see how anyone would know. Were most Mistborn to just burn it, it would rewrite their genetic code to increase their power as an Allomancer."

    4. Lerasium has Feruchemical and Hemalurgical powers.

    5. "Let me first assure you that the element is quite safe. I have found a good home for it. I protect its safety like I protect my own skin, you might say." This suggests that Hoid keeps the Lerasium inside his body, either for Feruchemical purposes or as a spike. However, Hoid is very bad at hurting people, suggesting Feruchemy. Furthermore, this WoB says outright that Hoid does not have Hemalurgy.

Conclusion: Hoid seems to use the Lerasium for Feruchemy, but it's likely something more complicated is going on.

  17. 'ello!

So before SoS came out I had some notes about the lost bead of Lerasium, and then I realised the issue would probably be addressed in BoM so I stopped thinking about it.

    Quote

    TLR uses Lerasium for Feruchemy:

    1. No answer to whether TLR and Hoid use Lerasium for Feruchemy

    2. TLR did not eat a Lerasium bead

    3. However, he did take a Lerasium bead for himself

Conclusion: The Lord Ruler either uses Lerasium for Feruchemy or some other unclear purpose.

...what happened to that Lerasium bead?! Was it lost forever in the corpse of The Lord Ruler?

Thing is, as you know, BoM did not at all deal with this issue, since the titular Bands were not TLR's!

What do we know that I am missing as to what happened to the lost bead?

    ...

Read The Lost Metal and find out?
