Posting the revised edition of this piece. I don't know how to get rid of the old one, but I realized as I put this one up that I had forgotten to give Kaladin his brands.. So I fixed that. Even though they're not super apparent in this piece. heh. If anyone knows how to edit/delete a previous gallery upload lemme know. I'd love to declutter the gallery of that repeat submission.

I've already added this guy to the gallery, but I wanted to toss it into the Forums for a bit more exposure =) Here's the first in a series of works centered around Kaladin. A scene of the aftermath of a battle with the Parshendi. They're on the retreat, and Kaladin is going to the aid of a downed bridgman. And he's yelling something.. Or yawning really hard.. I'm going to try to toss in some of the process work so you can have a look at the phases this thing went through if you want =) Lemme know what you think! (p.s. looks like the progress shots are all scrambled in order. Basically, if it looks crappier, it's from earlier in the process)

Phew. It's been a while that I've been working on this one. This is a glimpse of a scene where Kaladin is going to the aid of a downed bridgeman, and is part of a series of Kaladin scenes that I want to create. Looking at this thing you might strike upon some logical questions, like: Bridgeman, huh? So where's the bridge? How did the dude get separated out to some ledge out of sight of his bridge if he had an arrow in his gut? Do you really think the shattered plains have such tall formations as you painted out in the distance? What the lighting? So if Kaladin is way back here, then the Parshendi in the distance must be retreating... so how did the Alethi archers make it way up to the front lines so quick? The answers to these and many other questions are this: I'm jus' learning. This was a practice piece, meant for learning. We learn best from our mistakes and MAN did I make a lot of mistakes in the making of this. But as a result: I learned bunches of stuff =) Thank you Brandon Sanderson for all the inspirations.

New Dalinar Portrait, and more Kaladin to come
grantmhansen replied to grantmhansen's topic in Stormlight Archive
O goodness, heh. Yeah, I definitely needed to be clearer with my question/intention there. Rather than really wanting an ordered list of who you think is the best, I'm just interested in seeing other great Cosmere art, finding some cool artists to follow, and seeing other takes on stories I adore. So sorry about dropping a tactlessly-phrased request in there. My bad :/ -
New Dalinar Portrait, and more Kaladin to come
grantmhansen replied to grantmhansen's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thank you all so much!! Argent, I'd love to know who your top 5 Cosmere artists are. Could you shoot out a list? =) Kipper: I've definitely got it on my list to make fanart for Brandon's other books someday, including Warbreaker. Dunno what the timeline is on that (there's just SO MUCH to love and draw about the Stormlight Archives for me), but it'll certainly happen someday And yes, the Dalinar portrait is in the Gallery. And Tyson: I've heard that a lot. Interestingly enough, I never imagined him without a full beard. so funny/cool how there can be so many interpretations all based on the same description. That thur be good writing on Brandon's part. -
I wrapped up a Dalinar portrait study recently with the intent of updating this: It's been sitting on my digital easel for a while as I basically procrastinated getting into finishing up the uniform and such, but I eventually decided to just let it be a face study and move on with life. So without further ado, here's my interpretation of Dalinar Kholin, one of my absolute favorite literary characters EVER. I feel good about this one, in that I feel like I'm learning and making progress with each portrait. It's fun/painful to look back and see where I came from, but hopefully I can keep up the growing and someday maybe Brandon will hire me to paint a piece or too (wink wink, Brandon Sanderson. Wink. Wink.) Lastly, I wanted to throw in a little preview of the next piece of fanart that I'm starting into. It's just a rough sketch right now (and I mean seriously ROUGH), but it's starting to take the shape I want, and I figure that if I throw 'er in here, I'll be held a bit more accountable to actually get the thing done in a timely manner. It's a scene that I'm kinda hoping to make into part of a series, and it'll be called Kaladin, Healer - 1. To be followed by future Healer scenes, and then things like: Kaladin, Warrior or Radiant or Betrayed, or whatever. If y'all have good ideas for scenes or themes to mix into the series, I'd love to hear them! Here's the rough: p.s. When I previewed this post, the little rough drawing is SUPER tiny. Anyone know how to up the size of the thing? I couldn't figure it out...

I sat on this piece for a while in a near-completed state thinking that I just didn't have the time I needed to get in and really finish him up, especially as far as detailing out the uniform and stuff. Then I thought: what the heck? Just let this be an exploration into Dalinar's face, and I'll worry about the uniform and stuff on a future piece. I've done a few portraits straightforward like this, and though they've been great practice, I'm really wanting to do something with a bit of action to it to keep pushing my education forward. So I present: my take on Dalinar. I've spent a lot of time and iterations of drawing Dalinar over the past couple of years, and he's been pretty unique in that I've had a relatively clear idea in my head of what he would look like. I'm happy to say that this drawing matches my inner image of him fairly closely =) Not to say that I wouldn't do a redesign someday if I really felt the need. Enjoy! And thanks brandon for writing such a well-rounded, complex-and-challenged-but-also-trying-to-be-good-despite-nearly-everyone-being-against-him character. Love this guy.

Thanks for still liking the art! =) I know how ya feel. once in a while I see someone turn out some great work that I just... don't agree with. It's sorta a hard moment for me too, to try and turn these characters that have held this shifting, ever-perfect-for-the-moment form in my minds into something concrete. It can feel really limiting, you know?

Nice Pun I'd be honored if you'd use in in your song! If there's any sorta place that you credit the artists you use, could you just pop my name and website in there? Grant M Hansen, and grantmhansen.com If there aren't any credits, then it's all good =) But for sure send me the link to the video when you put it online!

Thanks CHOUTAGOD! Why don't I draw for comics? I keep asking myself the same question, then trying my hand at the stuff and realizing that I've still got a lot to learn before anyone's really gonna be willing to hire me =) HOWEVAH: I am drafting out a story of my own with the goal of someday (soonish) making my own webcomic (all this to learn a bit about how to comic so that someday Brandon will come across my work and want me to be a part of arting his stories (every finger and toe crossed as I say this)). Also, I would happily paint/draw you... But it'd have to be a trade. For money, you see

Hello 17th Shard World, This is my first entry in the forum. I've been putting some art up in the gallery and someone recommended that I post them here too so that they'd reach a few more souls. The cell-shaded, cartoony looking ones are all several months to about a year old, so there's lots that I look at and want to change in them.. I'll do a few more reboots soon. Hope you all like 'em! Let me know what you think. You can see them, and some more stuff on my website if you ever have a mind: grantmhansen.com
