Kobold King, one of the best things to learn about being an adult is that you no longer have to consider just your age contemporaries as your "peers". Peers aren't determined by what year you were born. Your peers are the people who love the things that you love, who joke about the same things you joke about, and who love to learn about the things you love to learn about. We are your peers. Except when it comes to hilarious, random ramblings of mad genius. In that, you are our superior. Yes, you will. You're in a crazy-rapid growth stage of life. You will change by leaps and bounds in the short time between now and graduating high school. Every stumbling block you defeat, every report you research, every exam you drudge through is an accomplishment under your belt. Now, being a teenager again, that is something that I wouldn't do for any amount of money.

Heh. I can just see little kids doing that to make the "You must be this tall to ride" height requirements.

It was them Silicon Valley whippersnappers! *shakes cane* Oh...wait. That was the 90's. I was a teenager then. In all honesty, for all its flaws, I do love the internet. I'm one of those tail end of Gen X cuspers who watched us move into the information age in high school. I still remember how to use a card catalog, but am perfectly comfortable with Google as well. The world has changed a lot in the past couple decades.

Back in the good old days, we didn't have none of this fancy reply interface nonsense. Nope, if we wanted to post to an internet board, by gum we stuck a note to a carrier pigeon and tossed it out the window! Half of our replies never made it to the board! But that's the way it was and we LIKED it!

It's a great idea, except....that would add more to his plate and leave him less time for writing books. Once Upon A Time is nice and all, but it's just not worth having fewer Sanderson books. That is a price that is simply too high to pay.

There's an equilibrium to be reached, and the recipe requires some good ingredients. Good mods, people who are mostly reasonable people, and a living fandom and/or reason for being are among those. Back in the days of yore, I was part of the Bronze:Beta Buffy fandom board. It had its rocky places, but in the end, the reason it faded was because Buffy, Angel, and Firefly had all ended. It's raison d'etre was gone (though I do still maintain a few of the friendships I gained back then). Of all of the forums and posting boards I've been on over the years, 17th Shard is definitely one of the nicest. in fact, I can only think of one where people are more polite - and that's an etiquette forum.

I stand corrected. Assuming you've got some good longevity genes, that might work. But it's risky; there's a lot that can go wrong at 80. Osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease, etc. Heck, my father-in-law is 70, and he's had a pacemaker for a long, long time. So now we're down to, "You can do this thing, but is it really worth it?"

Remember that Feruchemy is essentially end-neutral. You can never get out more than you put in. You could conceivably "even out" your age somewhat throughout your life so as to spend less time aged and feeble, but you can't extend your life. Unless, of course, you're Compounding. Then all the rules fly out the window and settle in the garden to snack on daisies.

The only thing that I am certain of is that the Universe has a sense of humor. There is really no other explanation for the platypus.

Correct, I was specifically asking about Compounders. It never occurred to me to ask about the other, as it seems to me highly unlikely that a Leecher (or a Nicroburst, for that matter) could force-burn on someone who isn't actually capable of burning the metal involved. But, you know, I could be wrong. It's been known to happen once or twice.

I'm about 60-70k words in, but that's just the rough draft. It'll need a solid rewrite before it's ready for me to show to anybody. And I'm sorry that it's taking me this long; us suddenly deciding to buy a new house and up and move has derailed me from this and a major cosplay project. (Seriously, it's been less than 3 weeks since moving day. I've been unpacking my library today. I have all these things I want to do, but my home is in too chaotic a state to focus on any of it.)

I didn't specifically ask about hemalurgical spikes, but I'd say that's a rational conclusion that can be drawn. I would think that hemalurgical spike would be harder to force a burn than a charged metalmind, though, in terms of difficulty levels. It might be a LOT harder. Also, I think it would only work if the target is capable of burning the metal that the spike is made out of, which isn't necessarily going to be the case.

The MAG numbers are too high. Mistings and Ferrings aren't quite as common in the population as the supplement states. (But they're still a lot more common than Final Empire numbers.) Another potential tidbit of amusement that I just remembered: someone asked how much Sazed "cheated" when it came to the Metalborn distribution. That was met by more mysterious smiles and even a bit of chuckling. Sorry this is coming in so disjointed, but that Magic tournament ran late last night. I am too old to be staying up past 1AM anymore.

Sorry. OK, quoting myself with the post in the other thread, specifically regarding the distribution of Mistings and Ferrings in the population as of Alloy of Law: Oh, and one other tidbit of information, so that this post isn't just a rehash of other stuff I already said on another board: Brandon verbally confirmed that he plans to return to Kansas City for WorldCon next year.

Well, he said Coinshot, but that could easily be a "general acquaintance" level rather than "this dude I go to work with" level. So, most likely, everyone has at least met a Coinshot once in their life. Maybe it's some girl down the street. Maybe it's your second cousin once removed. I don't know; I didn't want to push to hard for ridiculous specifics when the guy was really there to play games and have some fun with the fans. That is possible; while it was a bit vague, though, I think what he meant with the "unevenly spread through the population" was actually in Mistings and Ferrings coming together into Twinborn.

Oboist here - I know what a bassoon is! Absolutely vital for a good woodwind quintet.

You? Espousing controversial political opinions? Never! The way they get written on the Missouri ballots usually has a translated tagline that says what passing the measure will do to existing tax rates. So we'll get footnotes that say, "this will totally not raise your taxes, yo, just maintain one that's already there". Now that I'm on the Kansas side of the line, I expect things will look a little different. And I just realized - I've never voted in any state other than Missouri. I've lived in several states (Wisconsin, Illinois, Nevada, Arizona, Missouri, and now Kansas), but most of them were when I was a kid. All that moving around did tremendously genericizing things to my accent, though. And people wonder why the KCMO school district has so many problems.... Oh, also, you missed a great con. (Unless you were lurking and I didn't see you.) It was good times, man.

Resurrecting this thread because I got a solid answer from Brandon about this last night. Straight WoB: the numbers in the AoL MAG supplement are off. He said that they're not terrible, but they definitely are shown as somewhat more common than they really are. But he also said that they're not nearly as rare as people seem to think; for example, he stated that virtually everyone would know at least one Coinshot. So there are definitely a lot of Allomancers around. And the occurrence of Twinborn would not be a normal statistical spread (alas). As folks opined before in this thread, the Terris folk do tend to keep somewhat to themselves, so there's not a huge amount of population mix. So Twinborn will be rarer. I did point out that there had to be some mix, else we'd be seeing full Feruchemists around, and to that he mostly just smiled and looked mysterious. As he does. And then he proceeded to trounce me in a game of Magic.

OK, so in the signing line, I asked the question about chromium vs a Compounder with both invested and uninvested metals in both their stomach and piercings. Sorry I don't have exact quotes, but there was a line and no easy way to take notes. But what it boils down to is this: 1) Yes, the piercings will get burned off.* 2) The noninvested metals go before the invested ones. He said that because invested metals are harder to effect, it takes a little extra time and effort to get them to burn off. So a Leecher trying to clean out a Compounder would have to get a good grip and hang on for a few seconds. 3) Chromium burns about as quickly as duralumin, so if you're trying to burn off a lot of metals, it is possible to run out of chromium before your target is clean. This would probably only be an issue when dealing with larger pieces (like jewelry) rather than your standard metal-flakes-in-the-stomach deal. I asked another question about the population levels of Mistings, Ferrings, and Twinborn in the AoL era during the Magic tournament, but it goes better as a response to an older thread of mind on the Mistborn boards. It basically will tie up that thread quite nicely. Also, I got beat at Magic: the Gathering by Brandon Sanderson. That was cool. * I bet that seeing that happen would look downright weird.

Got my book signed and a question answered. Good stuff, but too much to type on my phone. Expect a bigger post later tonight.

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Kaymyth replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
I've had lots of practice. I also enjoy such work-related pastimes as IM'ing ridiculous gifs to my coworkers and driving my team lead crazy. It's not the first time I've done it; Team Lead has made no bones about the fact that he wants to move more into a Compliance-type role, and when that day finally comes, I fully intend to throw my hat into the ring for his current position. -

All Hades is about to break loose at work next week. I am gonna enjoy the heck out of my three-day weekend (including ConQuest and a Brandon signing!), because I'm gonna need the fortitude to make it through the madness that is coming. As if it's not enough that it's just going to be a hot mess, my team lead and manager are going to be out on vacation. This is going to leave me and another coworker to tag-team the job of pretend team lead while the hot mess is going on. On the bright side, we know it's coming. And this means that when something really stupid happens (as it inevitably will), I will get to pass the news on to the uberbosses and tag on the line, "in accordance with the prophecy." Because I live for moments when I can say things like that. -
Usually grannies knit sweaters...but I will sit back and entertain myself watching you try to sew one. Or you could take this ball of cosmic terror yarn and use some spikes some of these here, er, knitting needles...

This poll is invalid, because the answer is clearly Wayne. Sure, Kelsier and Elend are Mistborn, but Wayne is the only person in the Cosmere capable of adding 2 and 2 and getting a pickle. Think about it. Instant pickles with the power of mathematics.
