  1. Plus she had just lost one of her dragons saving him and his men's lives. That was one hell of a sacrifice.
  2. Huh. Looks like spring in the Midwestern U.S.
  3. Regarding this: * George is a slow writer. He always has been. He's one of those folks who needs to have a particular setup and atmosphere around him in order to be able to write, and if he doesn't have that then he can't. Not every author can keep up Brandon's pace. * ASoIaF is an extremely complex story with a zillion moving parts. He's had the overall plot and ending in his mind since the beginning, so if and when he gets stuck, it's on the details. Not the big picture. * Being fairly active in fandom myself, I know quite a few people who are acquainted with him on a personal level. Even before he hit his fame arc, he was always putting time and energy into supporting the community in general and helping new authors get a leg up. He continues to do this. He's using his fame in order to launch other writers into that same sphere. See the recent news about him getting HBO to sign on to turn some of Nnedi Okorafor's work into a series. Ask any author on the convention circuit who's met the man - they'll tell you he's earned his time in the spotlight.
  4. It was less "advice" and more "putting on my Moderator hat."
  5. OK, guys. The car dude was a chullbrain. On this we can all agree. As for the rest, let's save the "topic spirals out of control until everybody is yelling at each other and nobody is happy" for Facebook, shall we?
  6. Only if they are things you legitimately intend to eat yourself. Setting nasty "traps" for food thieves is no more ethical than stealing the food in the first place.
  7. I'm late to the party on this, but... In addition to the standard "smart kid coasts and coasts and then runs into a brick wall because none of the past teachers bothered to actually challenge you and teach you actual good study habits," I also have the inattentive form of ADD. For ADD brains, there are only two times: now and not-now. And it's very, very easy to keep pushing everything into not-now. My advice: do you have a phone? Program alarms! Set an alarm at a specific time each day for practicing. When the alarm goes off, it's time to practice for X number of minutes. Then you can go and do something else. Next alarm goes off: homework time! It seems dumb and simplistic, but it's a way to trick your brain into changing "not-now" into NOW. Workplaces are too often rife with food thieves. Which is why I never put my lunch in the fridge, but keep it in my insulated bag at my desk.
  8. I was so focused on Orlion's worldbuilding complaints that I first read this as invisible plot holes. Please feel free to enjoy picturing the mental gymnastics my brain went through to force this entire post to make sense.
  9. I have moved this thread into Creator's Corner, where it will live a happy life of frolicking amongst the other creative glories of the Shard.
  10. I'm not there, but I know a few people who are. Finland just wasn't feasible for me.
  11. Heh, yeah, I try to only bug people who are familiar. I figured you and I had interacted enough that you wouldn't look at my post and go, "Wait, who the heck is this?" I suppose it's easier when you're not having to actively address the strange creature by name. Right now, though, I am amused at the mythical Duolingo person whose pig is always drinking milk. GUYS. I found an octopus hat crochet pattern. I AM MAKING A KRAKEN HAT.
  12. Thank you, that does make some sense. It's a lot less weird than some of the idioms English likes to throw around. S'cool; you're the only native Italian-speaker I know and thus I decided to bother you. Don't be surprised if I throw more stupid questions at you in the coming days. As of this morning, Duolingo says that I am 5% fluent in Italian. Great. I can ask the bowl full of beef where to find the bathrooms. That's useful!
  13. I don't know. Duolingo doesn't give a whole lot of context. I'm sure it's something embedded into the culture that makes perfect sense to native Italian speakers. Which...hey. Hang on a sec. We actually have one of those lurking around the Shard! Hey, @Yata! Can you explain the April fool's fish connection?
  14. I got my first Duolingo bonus skill: idioms and proverbs. The Italian phrase for "April fools" is "pesce d'aprile." Guys, this literally means, "April's fish."
  15. You are dooooooomed to have this thread pop up on your active content notifications for all time! Muahahaha!
  16. So, those of us who are in the continental United States are rapidly approaching what promises to be a spectacular celestial event - a total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21. It's going to wend its way across the country from Oregon to South Carolina, casting a shadow across thousands of miles of cities and towns. For my part, I live in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Totality will hit on the northern side of the metro (I live on the south side), so we knew from the get-go we'd have to take some vacation time and travel northwards. And we figured if we're already going to have to drive, we might as well hit the centerline for maximum totality time. So we have a parking spot reserved at the airport on the south side of St. Joseph that sits practically right on top of that sweet spot. We also have friends who will be there as well, so we're going to have a little nerd eclipse tailgate party. Because why wouldn't you? So, who's got big plans? How many big plans for other Sharders might happen to link up in the same place? Use this thread to coordinate and meet people! And if by chance anyone else happens to have plans to be at the Rosencrans airport in St. Joseph, MO, y'all can come hang with me.
  17. The Shardfork thing was hilarious. Someday, Lift and Shallan are going to meet and their spren are going to be in so much trouble. Much less blehblehbleh today. Got some decent rest in over the weekend. Burned through an entire Kate Daniels book yesterday. The crud is almost gone.
  18. Stop tempting me to start blathering Charlie the Unicorn quotes all over the house! I still have too much cold-crud in my sinuses and throat for that to be at all comfortable.
  19. My apologies for having stuff like "making complex costumes," "writing stuff," and "working a convention" cluttering up my schedule. oh come on
  20. Rich has really picked up speed lately; we've been getting multiple updates a week. I am most pleased, and am gonna thoroughly enjoy it while it lasts. He has undisclosed health issues that flare up regularly and slow him down. So us getting lots of comics also means that he's in good health. Win-win all around!
  21. I knoooow stop judging meeee! (I started out on Mistborn. Took me a while to filter into the other books, and the branching happened after I joined the Shard.) What, you're shunning me after I read it? That makes no sense. hee YES. Oh, and I read Edgedancer now, too. Wyndle suffers so much. He reminds me of C-3PO. thaaaank yoooou
  22. Nope. Give me a break, I had a busy year. Too many costumes to make, and amigurumi to make for convention Guests of Honor! Not to mention actually needing to read some of said GoHs books so that I had a halfway decent idea of what they were about. WoR was rather a lot of book. I needed a solid block of time to dig through it.
  23. F-first time. *hangs head in shame*
  24. I finally finished reading Words of Radiance yesterday. I mean, if ya gotta take a sick day, might as well make the most of it, right? Right. So. Four months till Oathbringer...
  25. Their logic does not resemble our Earth logic. I get what you're saying, but I thought that the primary function of a gap year was to give the person a chance for extended decompression before ramping up into secondary education. A lot of folks hit college and burn out because they're so run ragged from four years of intense study in high school. I mean, Elsa's basically got two options here: 1) Take a gap year. 2) Go straight into college. Given the sheer magnitude of stress she's been under in recent months, a break seems like a really good plan.
