  1. I find it highly amusing that your Worst episode actually sets up the plotline for your Favorite one.
  2. I'm afraid that I'm having to be careful about how I divvy up my creative spoons as it is. Joining into a full RP like that would be one more project that pulls time away from my others. I finally just finished my Alpha draft of Swift as Steel (thus rewarding myself with getting to read Shadows of Self) that I started a year ago. I now have my D&D armored Jean Grey costume to work on to get enough of it finished to wear for Halloween. Then I'll need to finish it properly for the crazy round of conventions I'm going to next year, plus I have at least two other costuming projects that I want to have ready for Costume Con and World Con. I also have music to write and a steampunk band to rope together. Add to all that I need to start working out again (probably after NaNo, during which I am going to do my rewrite of Swift as Steel) so that I can shave off some of this fluff that has crept on over the last couple of years. I need to be able to fit into my chainmail again if I want to pull out my Zelda: Warrior Princess costume for the con circuit. (Yes, I know I'm talking about losing weight for the sake of costuming. I have weird priorities.) The upshot of all of this is that I'm starting to develop some good habits. Instead of going straight upstairs and hopping online after work, I've been heading into the library and doing some writing. Or into the basement into the sewing room to work on costumes. That hour or two every day after work and before dinner is being put to good use, and it's starting to add up, but that means less time for piddling about online.
  3. I cannot understand one single rusted thing you lot are saying. I'm going to go read Shadows of Self now. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
  4. I don't have a WHIO character, so I'd just crash the party cosplaying as pony-me: This would mostly involve doing my hair up in a mane hairdo and slapping a cutie mark on my butt. Probably while also cosplaying something else. Cosplaying as pony-me who is also cosplaying! Hey, your upvote count is > your post count. That there's braggin' rights.
  5. What is wrong with that woman?!
  6. Alpha draft is DONE!

  7. And one whose grammatical skills are far inferior to your own, no less!
  8. Well, I'm pretty sure that we know that aluminum insulates from Allomantic influence, so the non-aluminum parts would have to be external. But I doubt there's that much; aluminum is used for many good reasons. That's one of the reasons I know that Scadrial eventually has to crack Hall-Heroult - it's impossible to develop an aerospace program without aluminum.
  9. *cough* ...airplanes are made primarily of aluminum. Depending on the alloy used, there's a good chance that neither Pushing nor Pulling will work on them at all. /partypooper
  10. I saw someone on Kongregate with the same username that you use here. ...I don't think that it's you.
  11. Well, statistically speaking, people rarely get fired on a Monday. So there's that. This why in my world, fancy dress shoes = combat boots.
  12. That moment in your writing when you realize that your MC is attracted to someone you never had any intention of pairing her with, and it's mutual. "Oh. Oh, dear. I know you both better than you know each other at this point, and this will NOT end well."

    1. Kobold King

      Kobold King

Solution: turn the other character into a giant alien tarantula. Then they can work professionally without any of that pesky attraction!

Heh. That would be a rather drastic change to Mistborn Era 2 canon. ;)

No, fortunately it's coming up at the end of the book, and there will be a timejump of several years between this and the next one I write. If they're gonna do their thing, they'll do the thing, but it'll be mostly offscreen so that people don't get too attached to the pairing, because there is no way in heck that those two are going to be able to sustain a relationship indefinitely. Which...

Huh, there's a character limit cutoff.

As I was saying, which means that there'll be a breakup near the beginning of book 2. I can work with that.

  13. I'd be happy to take a look at them, if you like.
  14. It's OK; we're well aware of the weird wiring job your parents did on you. You shall continue to get a pass until you are out from under their influence. However, once you've been out for a few months, I expect you to start developing an ego, missy!
  15. They may also have a minimum amount of time that they have to keep the job open.
  16. You mean, aside from the Random Stuff thread that is now in its third iteration due to high post volume?
  17. 5,000 words that need editing. Because at least they're there, and have the potential to be turned into 5,000 words of exquisite prose in the future.
  18. I'd like to point out that in our current tax system, people at or below the poverty line don't pay anything in income tax. And if we didn't have wealthier people paying taxes, we'd have no social safety net for those who are living in poverty. (The fact that we need a bigger net is a debate for another time.) I know that you've argued before that you don't believe that the development of civilization is a foregone conclusion for an intelligent species. I think that may be true up to a certain point - but only so long as the population is small enough to allow those smaller tribes to coexist with minimal interaction. Once population reaches a certain density, though, things change. People interact and clash, competing for desired resources. Civilization is a natural development for dealing with large populations. And honestly, at this point, we have so many people on this planet that bringing us back to those tribal societies would require a massive global catastrophe, be it war or natural disaster. Billions would die. Is that less evil than maintaining civilization? I sure as heck hope not.
  19. I have to say that I myself am unwilling to give up modern medicine. I'd be in seriously bad shape today if I couldn't have gotten my gallbladder out (and the problem that sent it bad was due to a genetic defect, not diet). But really, when it comes down to it, without the modern medicine that our civilization has produced, my brother would be dead. Just flat-out dead, do not pass Go, etc. He broke his neck 12 years ago in a really stupid accident. I mean, I suppose arguably there might not have been a pool there for him to dive into if we didn't have civilization, but down that rabbit hole lies conjecture and madness. He broke his C-5 vertebra. Luckily, he didn't break the spinal cord, but still, without medical intervention he could have died (as it was, he almost did die). He certainly would have been quadriplegic, which in a world without our medical advances would have left him dead before long. Instead, he's alive. He's walking. I'm willing to pay into a system that allows for things like that.
  20. You might start by picking up some ebook copies of books you've already read in English. That will give you some practice and let you get a feel for how things should be; you can even reference your native language copies to make sure you're catching everything. Then that'll let you dive into Shadows in English (and there's nothing stopping you from later picking it up in your own language, too).
  21. It means that your employer is an idiot and can't math.
  22. It makes sense to me. Though if you really wanted to be sneaky, you could figure out where the job is posted and take a look and see if there's also a job posted for the morning shift. If there isn't, and they are planning on replacing you, then your employers are unfathomably stupid. If there is, they're still stupid and jerks to boot. But if there isn't and they're just going to move you, then they're dumb with a side of thoughtless. I mean, they didn't even ask you if you want to work the morning shift.
  23. I like this theory. I think I'll go with it. In the U.S., for the most part, yes. Unless you're either 1) a union worker, 2) someone who works in an industry with tenure, or 3) you are being provably fired for a legally prohibited reason. But yeah, companies can absolutely fire someone and not give a reason, or give a completely made-up load of nonsense like, "we just don't think you're a good fit."
