Good point. I don't think mail-mi said what the limit there is, but I think an appropriate one might be range (they feel more strongly when they're closer) prior inclinations (like with Ari, it's more effective with people predisposed to like the child) and of course free will (once a character realizes they feel more warmly toward the child when they're closer and apathetic when far away, they realize they're being manipulated). When one or more of those limitations are in play, the child's powers cease being effective on that character and perhaps any other character who believes said character's story about the manipulative child. If those limitations were in effect, that would make the child much less of a story breaker and make the powers more dangerous, as once s/he tried to manipulate Lucentia the jig would be up. Does that sound more manageable?

If he was needed for that purpose, he could multiply dirt particles and other island materials exponentially until he had a nice little island. Vegetation would be an issue, and another Epic would need to provide that and perhaps solidify the foundation. Having another a Epic raise the islands through volcanic control makes more sense, though.

He'll be my Astoria character, but Procrastinatoria has been keeping me from remembering to add his bio to my EoA post. His favorite defensive move is quantifying a threat (number of bullets) and multiplying it by zero to erase it from existence. And he's a resurrection Epic who sees numbers as increasingly violent living entities with each death.

True. Though the "price" of that power is equal-and-opposite reaction (in this case, a powerful enemy in exchange for a powerful friend) so it wouldn't be a fair trade in the first place. Maybe a fairer trade would be Funtimes for the Financier, or vice versa. Both have strong, strange powers, both are pretty neurotic, and you probably wouldn't want either one as an enemy.

How would Funtimes turning on Remington or Nathan work out badly for the kid, though? Seems like if the kid is using their powers knowingly and extensively, they wouldn't care if a couple of vanillas died. Yay indeed. The amount of worldbuilding period in those books is impressive. I'm rereading Steelheart and I'm consistently impressed by how much worldbuilding Sanderson can put into just a few sentences.

Meeting Mook Slaughterfest Speech WAR Quota battle Toymaker's assassination Project Amber Are there any character-specific things (don't give specifics if they're spoilery) that anyone wants to make sure get in? I know I have a few scenes that I want to do, but they're pretty much all reactions. ... Yeah, Remington won't be cowed. Threatening death? He would've been disappointed with less. How advanced is this bug, and is it auditory, tracking, or both? If Remington were to have Funtimes meet him in a darkened alley so she could find and clone/transform the bugs to something less threatening, how much tampering would register? There's no way for Remington to know any of this, but I want to be prepared for the fallout if/when he asks for her help. Also, just asking this out of curiosity—would Sightline be able to see Nathan's bruise? I know he can see through the blindfold, but I don't remember it being anything like true X-ray vision, unless I'm wrong.

Everyone who's anyone will be there. Still a tad bitter that there's no draconequus creator. He must. There is no other name for him. Mission accomplished. He doesn't have the powers to back it up, though. And at this point, all he'd do to that kid for whom he harbors an irrational hatred is stay as far away as possible, grumble to Sam, and plead with Funtimes not to invite the kid over for the eighth time that week. (Though I'm picturing that dynamic—Nathan irritated by a kid Funtimes adores—and it's pretty hilarious.) So the Astoria thread is starting in January, and we still need to get the CorpseMaker war started. Should we hammer out a rough, spoiler-free timeline of events so we can make sure to hit them all before moving on to the next logical points in the story? (Alternatively, we could cover only those events through coordinated time-skips.)

I would pay good money to see that fight. Thanks! An Epic who creates islands just because. That would not be the strangest Epic in this game. If this Epic (calling him/her You Are Going To Love Me, or YAGTLM for now) chose Funtimes as a target, who would be the fallout?

I do have one character whose favorite movie is Napoleon Dynamite. This has been in my notes for a while, but it hasn't been referenced in game yet. This character is currently in Portland and wouldn't have much of a reason to go anywhere near Astoria, so unless this character and Chaos cross paths after a viewing of this movie, I doubt it will be a problem for him.

Maybe when his weakness is activated, chaos reigns. How about all the Chaoses turn on each other, and a few go after the original?

Wow. That's super detailed (and sounds super awesome). For a weakness, here are some ideas…. Napoleon Dynamite: Chaos, from the information here, seems to be a typical grandiose, god-complex Epic who was more successful than most in gaining territory. Napoleon Dynamite is a movie about a strange boy with strange tastes, who befriends an exchange student and, after a lot of what seems like nothing, wins. Napoleon is extraordinarily ordinary. His victories almost look like accidents. He seems to have no interest in ruling the school for himself, but wants to see Pedro become the leader. In other words, Napoleon Dynamite is as close to Chaos' opposite as you can get. Maybe he despised that movie as a vanilla, and grew to hate it even more as an Epic? A book on, documents from, or records of the Navajo justice system. With family and domestic disputes, the Navajo courts take a "horizontal" approach to justice: Unlike Anglo courts, which hand justice down "vertically" (the judge hands the verdict down to law enforcement, who see the sentence is carried out) these courts believe justice should involve everyone who will be affected by the verdict as equals. So let's say there's a custody dispute. Rather than having the couple argue their cases before a judge, who decides what should happen to the child, the couple, the child, and other extended family members would be called together to discuss the case, air how they feel and what has and would hurt them. There are arbiters, and together, they come to a conclusion that is "restorative" rather than "retributive." If this isn't the antithesis to Order's laws, I don't know what is. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The villain creates holograms of himself to serve as an army of yes-men. He is also morally bankrupt and has limbs that defy the laws of physics. And yes, in the end he dies in a fairly horrifying way. This might make Chaos feel uncomfortable deep down. Pug puppies. These are so adorable that Chaos would be too distracted to do anything but sit on his knees and say "Aww….what a cute little bandit mask you have! Oh, you just tilted your head! How did you get to be so cute?" Some of those were fairly tongue-in-cheek, but hopefully they help with ideas.

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
TwiLyghtSansSparkles replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
Upvoted for support. I might understand a teensy bit of what you're going through. I like to think of myself as fairly easygoing—and sometimes I am. But there are some little things, trivial things, that get to me. Like when people smack their lips, especially on hard candy….*shudder*. I know it's dumb, and I know life would be easier if I'd just get over it, but….I can't. It sucks when your own brain seems to hate you. I'm sorry, Quiver. -
Thanks!

She doesn't seem Sueish to me. And if Wes bit back, that would be not only stunning, but beautiful. Because it's a dinosaur. Biting Lightwards. If anyone deserves to be bitten by a dinosaur, it's him. I think it's a good thing this RP is set in Oregon instead of Newcago. Some of Nathan's more Woobie-inclined moments back at the casino might wind up reading like a Doofenshmirtz backstory if such a thing were ever Played For Drama. (Though some of Backtrack's whinier moments sound like a Doofenshmirtz backstory Played For Laughs in the grand tradition of Doofenshmirtz backstories. When he tells his story to Lightwards, I will have a very hard time not reading it in a Drusselsteinian accent. "And then, just when I thought I had crawled to safety from the terrible darkness of Koschei's mind, who should be standing before me but Lieutenant Mitchins of The Dalles City Guard. He has some problem with bikinis. I mentioned them and he got all serious when he said 'NO BIKINIS ON MY WATCH.' Seriously, who does that?" )

And then we have Nathan, Arvin, Vondra (who, just from his bio, seems more like an Iron Woobie), and Baxter Game—but I think the most impressive is Ray, who managed to become a Woobie from her very first appearance. (Thanks, Nighthound. ) I could, but if someone else feels inspired, go ahead.
