  1. I vote Benedict Cumberbatch. RDJ is awesome, but I think Cumberbatch is the better Sherlock. Not much, really. Though the thought of him doing that makes me want to keep his schedule very full indeed.
  2. I've only read through the page on Stripped Gryffindors, but I've already identified a couple. First, a quick explanation, as the page I'm referencing is a little long (but intensely fascinating to a Ravenclaw like myself): A primary House is the House with which a person's values most closely align. In a nutshell, Gryffindors view right and wrong as paramount, and believe the ability to distinguish it to be an intuitive thing; Ravenclaws see truth as something to be discovered, that can be learned by anyone; Hufflepuffs view people as the most important thing and will put their own needs aside to help nearly anyone, including an enemy; and Slytherins view their personal connections and inner circle as of utmost importance, and see betraying a family member or friend as the most egregious of sins. Now, a burned primary is a person who, usually due to some sort of trauma, has turned their back on the core values of their House, whose faith in those values has been irreparably shattered. The only one I've read about in-depth is Stripped Gryffindors. A Stripped Gryffindor is one who has lost their sense of right and wrong. They haven't lost their sense that right and wrong are important, but they can no longer tell which is which. They might cling to outward systems of control, in order to maintain some inward sense of peace, but it isn't quite enough and they may seem steadier than their un-Stripped counterparts, but the authors point out that Stripping is more like drowning and being unable to tell which way is up, rather than finally coming up on land. With that in mind, I dive into a spoiler tag.
  3. Pest of the Master Burgers? For…some reason that sounds like a Sherlock Holmes story. Not sure why. That's a tiny two-watt bright side, if you ask me.
  4. Fatebreaker: Yay! Someone else got that reference! DO NOT WANT NO LIKEY EEEEWWWW LIGHTWARDS YOU ICKY
  5. Same here. I may have heard it, but I don't recall... In other news, remember that page on explanations of each House? I'm going through the part on burned primaries and I cannot stop Sorting every Epic along those lines someone save me from myseellllllffffff. Actually, don't. I'm having fun.
  6. Adding on to what Blaze said, we're always open to new location threads. If you have a character who would fit best in a thread that doesn't exist, pitch the idea in the Question thread. We'd rather have a great character in a setting where they fit than a great character in a thread where they don't quite belong.
  7. I had a pretty strict definition of th phrase growing up, but the usage in that song strikes me as respectful. Especially with the line "But dear God, you're the only North Star I would follow this far."
  8. I think of his use like a prayer. Not in a taking-God's-name-in-vain sort of a way, but more calling God dear and telling him how his hand guided him when "the galaxies crossed and the sun went dark."
  9. "It's okay, lovely mosquito. You're alive now. I'm sorry for that meanie Scribbler swatting you. But all that is over because--what's this? You've brought a friend? Three friends? Oh! It's a whole flock! This is wonderful! I can't believe they really....AAAAUUUUGGHHHHHH!" Is that what happened in Oregon?
  10. That's happened to me a few times, and it's really annoying. Especially when there's no way to tell what was downvoted or why. I tend to assume that if something of mine has more downvotes than upvotes (it's happened) that the post was horribly offensive to someone. Maybe another good reform to introduce would be not only voting history, but giving users the option of adding a reason for their vote. Not everyone would, just like not everyone always gives a reason for editing a post, but it would give users a way to give constructive criticism rather than anonymous downvotes.
  11. Like redeemed!Deathwish goes out of his way to protect anyone with a heartbeat, redeemed!Lightwards would go out of his way to restore life to those he takes it from the most. Meaning....insects. And microbes. And that squirrel he accidentally hit the other night. I think trans-dimensional fire cows should become a thing.
  12. One possible way to implement this change might be to do it on a trial run sort of basis. Make downvotes and upvotes public for a short time--I'd say between one and four weeks--and then allow members to express their opinions on it. Because this idea would constitute a pretty big change, and it might be good to allow members to experience it before it's completely implemented. I think it would be cool to see, but I can also see some potential drawbacks, and a trial run would let myself and others see whether the benefits outweigh them.
  13. ...Teaches teens or adults, maybe. It takes the patience of an especially saintly saint to teach little kids--patience I don't have.
  14. Which means this might be a universe where Prof did earn a Master's degree and then a doctorate, making the nickname Prof much more apt.
  15. Further proof that the Reckonersverse is real; we're just living in a timeline that diverged from the one described in the books. In our world, Calamity never rose and Cody, rather than become a police officer, taught high school Spanish.
  16. I'll bet THAT was in interesting year.
  17. I'm still clinging to the long-lost-sisters theory. Here's a few Sanderson characters, as I've Sorted them so far: David Charleston: Gryffindor primary, Ravenclaw secondary Megan Tarash: Gryffindor primary, Slytherin secondary Vin: Slytherin primary, Gryffindor secondary Shallan Davar: Ravenclaw primary, Slytherin secondary Kaladin: Gryffindor primary, Hufflepuff secondary I'm not sure on Dalinar or Adolin, though I'm almost certain Dalinar is a Gryffindor primary. Jasnah is definitely a Ravenclaw primary, though I'm not sure on her secondary, I'm leaning toward Gryffindor.
  18. Can I get a hammer like Thor's?! I tend to think Slytherin began as a decent, if not outright good, organization. Although we get very little information on the Founders, what we do get portrays Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff as altruistic witches and wizards of pure intent. Godric wishes to foster bravery; Rowena, cleverness; and Helga, understanding and acceptance. Although Rowena's daughter does steal her mother's Diadem, she expresses horror and revulsion that Voldemort would corrupt it with dark magic. Salazar Slytherin was friends with these people. Why would they befriend a man who was every shade of evil--and if they were hoping to redeem him through friendship, why would they give him charge over a quarter of their students? Good people do make mistakes, but giving an obviously evil man control over the education of a quarter of their students isn't a mistake; it's idiotic. My thinking is that Salazar wanted to teach those "whose ancestry is purest" because of prevalent Muggle racism against witches and wizards. Those attitudes are confirmed to exist in-universe both through Harry's history textbooks and through the nonviolent but nonetheless strong prejudice of the Dursleys. I think Salazar's preference was due less to racism and more to a misguided commitment to the safety of the school. If this was before the Statute of Secrecy (and it was; the Statute came along in the 1700s and Hogwarts was founded in the 1100s) then there would be no reason why a Muggle spy with low magic couldn't infiltrate Hogwarts and spill her secrets to those who wanted it destroyed. In light of that possibility, requiring all applicants to have at least one wizard ancestor seems almost reasonable. However, as we can see in the series, this regulation was horribly corrupted over the years, to the point where its original intent was all but forgotten.
  19. I'm sorry. I honestly think there are some teachers who shouldn't be allowed to teach. If you're causing anxiety in your students, I think that should prompt a serious evaluation by the school board. The pizza at my old school would melt onto the fries they served with it. Not just the cheese, but the crust would melt. The "teriyaki dippers" were chunks of unidentifiable meat served with a side of sludge-like brown sauce. That's kind of cool, actually. What subject?
  20. Would the Coke restore his mind, or would he just be insane but good?
  21. With all the mental decay he's suffered prior to this storyline, the shock of seeing her not die would probably break him.
  22. In my school district, they thought "eating healthier" meant "smaller portions of the same crap we always feed them." It would have been so easy--not to mention less expensive--to give students half a chicken breast and a baked potato, but no. It had to be chicken nuggets and fries. And then they'd wonder why kids were always hungry and sickly. Makes me glad I had allergies so I always brought my lunch.
