Actual rubies, sapphires, and diamonds. I have a rock collection, so I pick them up cheap at gem/mineral conventions. Some rubies I made myself out of base materials. 

Some gemstones cannot stand the heating process. Emeralds (cracks, produces gas), heliodor, topaz (loses color, shatters), amethyst (loses color), garnets (burns), smokestone (loses color). I never tried zircon.
