Kaladins fall *spoilers*

I just finished the book and no one I'm close to has finished it yet and I just... I need to express something. This is my first post I think idk I've lurked for years. I've got emotions I need to share so please be gentle.

Kal's struggle with suicide really had always struck me. I read the first Stormlight when it came out shortly after a friend of mine committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. And the moment in WoK when he's on the edge had always stuck with me. I remember reading it wishing my friend had pulled back from that ledge.

This book when he steps off the edge I lost it. I bawled, sobbed and gasped. Sure it's a fantasy world and he's saved by the vision Dalinar sends and the realization that basically life matters and he saves his father. It's a beautiful scene and moment.

Point being it took me back 10 years ago to the scene he's at the edge wanting to jump and thinking of my friend wondering if he had all those thoughts too. To now seeing Kal coming at peace during his fall and though my friends didn't end up magically safe did he find peace in it too? 

And I just needed to share that with fans. It was beautifully written this book especially with he mental health issues. And I appreciate Sanderson for that. Thanks for visiting my rant.

Welcome to the board, and thanks for sharing that with us! 

I've spent many long nights wondering what waits for us Beyond, like the heroes in our stories, because I lost someone years ago similar to what you're describing. I don't have any answers, of course, but I find it comforting to believe that we all find peace at the end when we are free from pain and woe, while wishing our friends had been able to know the sun would shine again.

That's such a big reason why I love fantasy and other hero type stories like these. It's soothing to me too imagine places where magic persists, miracles happen, someone steps in at the 11th hour and saves the day.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss, and I'm glad you found solace in that sequence like I did. I had to put the book down for the night because it gave me so much to think about. Thanks again for sharing!

This scene really touched me as well for similar reasons. Of all the lines from the book it was not the "wow" moments like, "We chose" (although that scene was completely awesome as well) that keep coming to mind but Hoid's promise to Kaladin about he cannot promise there will not be darkness but there will be light again as well.
