Hello Mr Sanderson, I love your work and I've recently discovered your university lectures on Youtube.
I am planning to write books myself and I have a book with a few short stories which feature characters in the same planets that some of my main novels are going to be focused. I wanted to write this book for a couple of reasons, the first was to sort of show that these worlds don't revolve around the protagonist's story in the other books, the second was to explain some things more, sort of like an exposition dump.
I planned to have extracts of animal bestiaries (to sort of explain how the animals look and some information about them) for the different planets featured in this universe I thought of and also information on the humanoid species etc.
I am struggling with choosing a name for the book itself and thought I can maybe ask you for some professional advice?
Anyway, if you have the time to reply to this message it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Sincerely,
 Dylan Buttigieg

Hello Dylan! Brandon doesn’t check this website very much, so he doesn’t see messages to him on here. The best way to contact him would be to post this letter on Reddit in a sub related to him (Cosmere, Stormlight, Sanderson, ect.) and tag him with u/mistborn. He is more active on Reddit and will respond to most of his tags, though he is very busy so it may take a while. I’d also recommend checking out his website for lectures of his BYU classes and podcast Writing Excuses, both have been incredibly helpful for me and likely cover areas of writing that would help with your current problem.

Luna’s right, Brandon doesn’t check these forums very much. Additionally, you could try emailing him through the contact page on his website. You may not get a reply, considering how busy Brandon would be with the Rhythm of War release, but it’s worth a try.

We also have a writing group here on the Shard where members can submit work and offer critique, but you’d need to look into it further to see their rules and guidelines. If you don’t want to join a writing group, the Creator’s Corner threads are a good place to start. Anyone can post a thread asking for writing advice, and although we’re not professional authors, people are more than happy to help and share their thoughts.

There are also so many writing resources online. You could try looking at writing blogs and author’s websites (they sometimes have a section with writing advice).

Welcome to the Shard!

While I agree with the post above I'll try to help out here as i have found myself in a similar situation, and my recommendation for you is this, write the book first, then get the name. When doing the name itself two things to keep in mind

  1. The Title should reflect something about the book
  2. It should be memorable and simple it's what your audience will associate with the book it needs to be a ready on hand type name. There is a reason that the first book of Stormlight isn't Bridge run.
