Some silly questions that I'm sure have already been asked

Question

Posted

I've been reading a bunch of WoBs and I've had some thoughts based on a few of them.  I probably should have saved links, but I didn't.  Sorry about that.  Since I haven't saved links I'll probably misremember a bunch of technical terms.  Sorry about that as well.

BS said that Shallan reminded Kaladin of Tien because Tien was close to becoming a lightweaver.  He also said that lightweavers make the people around them be better versions of themselves.  Does that mean that Shallans family are monsters who became merely evil through her influence.  It's been a while since I've read SA, but I seem to recall that her family were horrible people who, if they existed in our world, would probably be the subject of a Netflix documentary series about a family of serial killers.  It seems odd that he described lightweavers as people who bring the best out of the people around them when there are a bunch of scenes that lay clear her brother regularly tortures small animals.  Or, is their some sort of external influence that is affecting her family to make them like that, like some sort of anti Pattern?

As a side note to this, BS has said that red can mean corrupted investiture, is Shallan corrupted in same way because she has red hair?  Could the Horneaters be corrupted in same way as well?

Would someone from Elantris be able to use an AonDor when they were on a different planet by drawing a constellation?  Possibly a different constellation, depending on the planet they are on, that shows Sel (?) in relation to other significant Cosmere planets as they would be seen from the night sky of whatever planet they are on?

Could Shai, from The Emperors Soul, use her soul forging skills to revive the spren from Adolin's sword?  It's still there, kind of, so I wondered if she could stamp the shard blade in a way to make it so that the spren had made a bond with Adolin, who hadn't broken an oath.

Another possibility for "curing" Adolin's sword, which contradicts my above theory, is would a chromium savant be able to cleanse the spren and revive it?

That's about it.  Like I said, I'm sure that these have already been asked or answered.  Either that or I'm completely misunderstanding several things.  Or, you know, both.

You could say that for her father but Shalan was not the only supernatural influence on the Davar family.

Spoiler

Brandon has confirmed that an unmade is enhancing their problems

What does or does not make someone evil is not actually a question I think anyone can answer.  Something is always influencing us supernatural or otherwise.  Her brother's penchant for torching animals is enhanced but a lot of it is just that he had a terrible home life and this is giving him issues.

Not every mention of red is an indication of corrupted investature.  I can say with a fair degree of confidence that horneater hair is just red.

If they get to far away from the city their powers stop working.

In theory I would say yes.  In practice I seriously doubt it.  Soulstamping to make investature do things is really hard.

I don't think so.  The sword had something pulled out of it it does not have extra stuff causing a problem.

Radiancy is more than just finding people with the right qualities, it's also about finding people who might need saving, like Teft or Venli, remember that the spren are also sapient beings who are not just mechanically looking for the perfect Radiant (though some of them do have certain systems in place for Bonding). So much also depends on perception, there could be crazy Radiants who interpret the Oaths in a very weird way and the powers would still work. The Ideals of the Lightweavers is really well represented by the names of their Surges: Illumination & Transformation. They illuminate people to their better selves, provide a sort of spiritual sustenance to help transform them to be better versions of themselves. Shallan did help her family in this respect, as noted by her brothers, with her joking and general happiness, same with Tien. And apparently her family was affected by an Unmade.

Was Shallan's family, during her childhood, being influenced by an Unmade?

Brandon Sanderson

Um, yes.

Questioner

Was it the corrupting--

Brandon Sanderson

I'll RAFO that, but yes, there is some external influence there.

There's a scene where you can see from the perspective of Nan Balat, Shallan's brother, where he's maiming an insect. It's described as soothing his aches. Is that in any way related to how Kaladin feels depressed and down during the Weeping even in his early childhood?

Brandon Sanderson

What's happening to Nan Balat is magically enhanced. What's happening to Kaladin is mostly just chemical depression. Be he is really too young to be diagnosed with depression during some of these events, but he's got the seeds in there. So Kaladin is not magically depressed. Kaladin is just legitimatly a person with depression. Nan Balat... What's up with him is... ah... being exaggerated by certain forces moving in on Roshar.

Nope, corrupted Investiture is red but not everything that is red is corrupted Investiture.

All magics on Sel are region-locked. Their Shards are locked in the Cognitive Realm so none of the magics work off-world... yet. (There are always hacks)

Shai would need to know a lot of the Recreance and of the spren, as well as a lot of Investiture to do anything close to that. Even then, it might not take.

What Chromium does is still not really known, do they burn off the Connection? the Investiture? the metals themselves? Besides, it might end up harming the spren more if it does either of the two former options and nothing for the latter
