Feruchemputers

Virtual Mayhem

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this idea has been suggested yet or anything, but while reading of Well of Ascension it occurred to me that Feruchemy could possibly be applied to a computer-like concept in a modern setting. Perhaps a digital display for information stored in copperminds? Something interesting definitely. Anyone have any ideas expanding off of this?

For any sort of computer there needs to be electricity, wearing a Coppermind with an electric current running through it, would be... uncomfortable to say the least. Though to be honest it is similar to a theory I had about the Southern continent using Fabrial like things which had a AI like thing instead of a Spren as the Cognitive aspect.

I suppose if you hooked up to a Investiture Metalmind then that could power it and computers have no Identity so that shouldn't interfere with it being able to use the stored power. This definately sounds plausible, using our limited knowledge of how Feruchemancy works. They could also use Hemalurgicly charged Spikes to gain extra powers. I know not a lot of people like it, but I'm pretty sure there is a WoB floating around somewhere that states, that if a Spike is melted down and reformed into multiple Spikes each Spike would contain a small charge. Thus allowing Spikes created from violent re-offending criminals to be used for 10 to perhaps 50 individual Spikes.

In this senario the Spike supplies the Spiritual aspect, the AI Feruputer supplies the Cognitive and the Physical aspects. Sounds reasonable... Right?

Edit: removed words that managed to ninja their way in.

Yea, that's kind of what I was thinking when I first thought of the idea, but I didn't know how to really explain it fully, as I only had a very basic understanding of the Metallic Arts, considering that I was unaware that there were 2 other books in the trilogy (No clue how I missed that, but I was very happy to learn that there was more to read!), and I'll definitely keep this idea in mind as I work my way through the series.  I'm currently around 200 pages into HoA, but I have finals this week so that's gonna put a dent into reading time.

Well, a feruchemist with a coppermind is already acting as a computer of sorts.  The nature of pulling something from the coppermind, potentially changing it (or just putting it back) and then reading something else is a type of Turing Machine.  I'm digging back into my Computer Science course work from years ago, but Turing Machines are theoretical computers (basically any modern computer is a Turing Machine at heart).  You read a symbol from a theoretical tape, the machine processes that symbol and the either writes something new to the slot on the tape or writes nothing.  The machine then moves the tape left or right and the process continues until the problem is solved.

The problem with a feruchemical computer that acts outside the feruchemist is how the information in the coppermind would be extacted and reinserted.  You'd need some sort of investitute, I'd think.

I wonder if you could do something with Awakening from Warbreaker to do that...
