Question

I was wondering about the nature of Investiture and liquids. Liquids are solid in Shadesmar, so do they have souls like many of the solid objects? You can soulcast from a liquid, which implies that it does have a soul, but how would things like Lashings work with water. Could a Windrunner lash part of a lake, or would the stormlight just defuse along the whole lake. And how would manifesting liquids work in Shadesmar. We see some of that in Oathbringer, but never the direct manifestation of a liquid. Has Brandon said anything about this?

I don't know that they're so much solid as that people tend to think of lakes, rivers, etc, as a single solid thing--The Ocean. The Purelake, etc. Whereas landmasses, people see things individually, like grass, soil, rocks, buildings, houses, tables...stuff.

For Lashings and liquid, Brandon says

What happens when you Lash water, or a body of water?

Excellent question, it’s going to have some hard time gripping on--

Questioner

Would it have a gravity well going on?

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah it would have a gravity well, it think-- yeah.  You are the first person to ask about that, I don’t think even my assistant has asked about that.  So that’s your tentative answer until I think about it some more, but I think it would.

Adhesion is probably a smarter way of manipulating a liquid anyway.
