+Invocation Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Was Shallan a special case due to the reneged bond that could still be repaired with the way her Lightweaving and Soulcasting manifested before she entered into a full bond again?

You need a bond of some sort to use the Surges, be it with a spren itself, or with knight as a squire, as we see with Vathah. If Shallan hadn't attempted to reach out to Pattern, her Surges wouldn't have returned at all though. Quote Havoc (paraphrased) In Way of Kings, Shallan is being chased by Cryptics.
