JDG
Hello everyone. I have actually not read a Sanderson book yet. I am a Dresden Files fan, and when i asked for some other authors to check out i was sent over this way. It looks like Mr. Sanderson has written a lot of different stories. For someone new to his work where would you guys suggest i start? I have heard great things about the Storm Light archives. Should i just pick those up or go for something else to get aqquainted with? Hopefully you will see more of me. Im always looking for new authors to explore and I hope Brandon Sanerson is one i can connect with. Reading about his first law of magic really appeals to me. Ive read a few books where it just seemed the author was just making things up as they went a long. It really annoyed me and sometimes i didn't even finish the book. After I saw his post about how to write about magic i got really excited about picking up one of his books. ~J
A Joe in the Bush
As another fan of Dresden, (Look at my Signiture), I would recommend the Mistborn Trilogy first. That's the most like Dresden is style and Length. The first Storm light book is as long as 3 Dresden books.
Haradion Drogon
If you are very interested in the first law of Magic, then I definitely recommend the Mistborn Trilogy to begin with, followed by either the Stormlight Archive, or one of his standalone books. Quiver he/him
Now, did you see the omnibus edition of Way of Kings or the half copies? ; ) Welcome to the forum. Everyone's right; if you're interested in the consistent magic, Mistborn is probably the best start. I only read the Stormfront, but Mistborn is the closest in tone and genre to what I read, so... WriteNowDave he/him
Hello everyone. I have actually not read a Sanderson book yet. Truth is neither have I... yet. I started listening to his podcast which is what lured me to this site. I have purchased a few of his books but am still working my way through book four of GRRM's GoT and its slow. Swimmingly he/him
To Quiver: The first few Dresden books are "meh". They climb in quality, with the quality being about " Awesome" by Changes. Changes is Awesome^2, and it only gets better from there. To JDG: Mistborn is a good place to start, but if you want a free (!) novel, read Warbreaker - it's excellent, and available of Brandon's website. Elantris is considered his worst published work, with much more generic magic and simpler, more stereotypical characters, but is still excellent. The Emperor's Soul is a novella, short and very well written, with a magic system with layers and layers of depth and incredible originality. Save the Stormlight Archive for last. It's worth it. If you email him through his site, he can send you some unpublished works, too. Ask for Aether of Night and White Sand.
Awesomeness Summoned he/him
I'll add my consensus on leaving stormlight for last. It's outstanding but is nowhere near finished yet so you don't need to be in any hurry to pick it up. Plus, you will more fully appreciate the various layers in stormlight if you've read all his other works (especially mistborn and warbreaker). JDG
Well i just finished the first Mistborn book and i thought it was excellent. So im definitely going to be sticking around. My main problem with other books i tried to read, was their lore was too close to Dresden. One book even gave a slight nod to the Dresden files in the first few pages. I just kept finding myself saying "Magic doesn't work that way" or "That isn't how vampires are supposed to be" when trying to read other books. I think Mistborn was so far removed and so well defined it got me over my hang ups on how i thought things were supposed to be in imagined realities. I went out and bought the other two. Im really enjoying this series. Edited May 1, 2014 by JDG
