+Sorana she/her Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 It's my birthday in summer. So I have summer and presents
whattheHoid she/her Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Ah, mine is in the fall, so I get a decent break in between presents. Although, to tell you the truth I am always buying something for myself.... usually a book. (^o^)ʕ•ٹ•ʔ

whattheHoid she/her Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 Books are the best presents ever!!
+Sorana she/her Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 Definitly! Never stopped writing that "book wish list" for christmas. Though now I divide books into "need to be bought right now" and "can wait until someone needs a present".
Winds Alight she/her Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 Asking to go home early from work so I can have more time to read Oathbringer. Got 30 minutes! 1
whattheHoid she/her Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 Oooh! Now I want to reread Oathbringer! Must finish Witcher series first! I got sidetracked with Skywaaarrrrrrddddd!
+Sorana she/her Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 My version of Oathbringer is still with my father... since 9 months... and I really want to reread it, but I can't. And now he stopped reading, because of Shallan and I convinced him to go on. So I'll have to wait even longer until I have that one home again...
whattheHoid she/her Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 Oof! I'm so sorry Sorana! On the plus side...your dad has good taste!
+Sorana she/her Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 That's right And my mum reads his books, too.
Rhapsody she/her Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 My mom read mistborn but in german and she refuses to read anything of his in english (but I only have the english books since I'm too impatient to wait till they get translated) so she hasn't read anything else.

Know that one. Thankfully my parents read the english version. But friends of mine wait for the translation and only got the first part of OB last month. I couldn't wait that long for a new book...
Turtle373 he/him Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 went to the dentist today and I'm going to get my wisdom teeth out next week so that'll be fun. Other than that not much, got to sleep in which is always nice

And what drives me really mad is she is always asking me for recommendations... and then she is not satisfied when I can only point out titles in english. Is it my problem that I only read books in english now? 2 hours ago, Turtle373 said: went to the dentist today and I'm going to get my wisdom teeth out next week so that'll be fun. Ammanas Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 (edited) @Ookla the Waiting If you are looking for a good German title to recommend to your mom than I recommend The Forgetting Moon by Durfee. It originally came out in English, but it has a German translation and has been very well received over there. It is a darker tale than Sanderson....probably the content is a cross between Stormlight and Abercrombie's First Law trilogy if that helps at all. Winds Alight she/her Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 (edited) I know this struggle very well! My father is also quite into fantasy, but he only reads in German and I only buy english books. I have no intention to read a Sanderson in German ever again. (Back in 2010, when I read Mistborn, I did so in German, will need to rebuy them in English XD). Today I do a bit of housework as it's my last day off for this year (except the sundays), and then I'll get back to Oathbringer. I'm somewhere around page 400 now. I'm much slower with this one than during the reread of WoK and WoR (read both of these within two weeks), and I want to fully enjoy thinks like ROCK POV and NO MATING! Will absolutely have to check this out.

Just to be clear though I was talking about graphic content such as sex, violence, cursing etc. The story itself is more of a combination of the prose and world building of Tad Williams along with the grit and attitude of Glen Cook (with the pacing falling somewhere between the two author).

I liked it though. The characters were well developped and the world was interesting. But I didn't read the german version, so I can't really say anything about the translation. 1

Edit: Here is a photo Thanks I guess I'll tell her that one when next she askes.... It is still pretty frustrating! The funniest thing was when I recommended mistborn to her, she refused because I only have the english copies and not two months later she tells me about this wonderful book she has found..... Well you can probably guess which one she was talking about . At least she has good taste! 59 minutes ago, Ookla the Clueless said: I liked it though. That's the problem sometimes I really hate what translations do to a good book. 13 hours ago, Turtle373 said: all four poor turtle. I deepfrosted yoghurt and licked on that because it helped more than simple cool packs. Perhaps it'll help you too.
whattheHoid she/her Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 I just got back from the park, and now off to see Santa and get some lunch! Is the German translation of Mistborn particularly bad? I've noticed with the translation of the Witcher books, in Last Wish there were a couple of phrases that lost its meaning, as they were probably Polish idiomatic phrases.
