Aradel he/him Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Erm... Spiked mammals aside... As far as toxicity goes, I don't think Brandon's put much thought into it beyond "make sure you burn off your metals before you sleep" I doubt chromium Mistings can dissolve metals not in someone's body, but if they could it would be on a micro scale. Allomancers burn small shavings of metal to get their power. It would take hours and hours of dissolving shaving sized pieces of steel to eat away a single steel girder. Maybe a hand-sized bite if it's a chromium savant. Dissolving metals in another's body: Since those metals are "dissolved" not "burned" I think we can assume they are able to dissolve metals inside a person who is not an Allomancer. (Same goes for Aluminum Mistings and metals within themselves.) The only stipulations would be that the metal would have to be very close to allomantically pure for Chromium or Aluminum to dissolve it. This makes me think of an Aluminum Gnat poisoning someone's meal with toxic metal and burning off the toxins, making it seem like the other guy simply got sick. Next thing you know, guy's dead and the "Gnat" gets off Scott-free
FeatherWriter she/her Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Makes me wonder, if an Aluminum Gnat were somehow to figure out that they had an allomantic power, could they use it? Like if they ingested Allomantic pewter, could they burn it off with Alumnium even though they can't sense the pewter?

They'd be able to dissolve (not burn, Duralumin-burns Aluminum-dissolves) metals from their systems. Not much use, but it keeps them from getting poisoned. [lightbulb] On second thought, if a Ferring of a toxic metal was also an Aluminum misting they'd never poison themselves with their Metalminds. [/lightbulb] Anyone guess what happens if you burn or dissolve a metal that has a Feruchemic charge to it?
Ryan he/him Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 It's too bad Arsenic isn't allomantically active...
Aradel he/him Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 It's too bad Arsenic isn't allomantically active... I know, it'm much less interesting when they aren't immune to all poisons. By the way, cadmium and bendalloy are both nicely toxic.
Quantum Toast he/him Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I'd always wondered if Preservation made Scadrial humans more resistant to metal poisoning than humans elsewhere. (Not totally resistant, since Kelsier brought the issue up, but even a little could help.) Seems like a sensible precaution if you know they're going to be running around playing with stuff like cadmium.

Quantum Toast he/him Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 why would he just make them a bit resistant, why not make them totally immune, if you're going to be tweaking and all. Compromise with Ruin, maybe.
Eric Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 On the other hand, would the lesser Cognitive aspect of animals allow Soothers/Rioters to control them more easily? Might become popular for animal handlers. Tag your animal and bam, it behaves perfectly whenever you need it to.
Deus Ex Biotica Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 On a related note, I do not think I would like to eat flakes of steel, personally. Are people in Scadrial possessed of really, really tough digestive tracts, to avoid dying of internal bleeding from metals cutting them up?

Are people in Scadrial possessed of really, really tough digestive tracts, to avoid dying of internal bleeding from metals cutting them up? They usually wash them down in some kind of liquid. Presumably, they also make them very fine powders before eating them. They note in TFE that there are merchants who specialize in Allomantic metal production. A way of eating them safely is probably part of their expertise.
