Long time reader of the forums and first time poster.

Was re-reading Oathbringer and realised that I didn't remember anything about Amaran's Shardbow that we see in his battle with Kal. Not sure if it was mentioned before in WoK or WoR. Was wondering how he got it ? Appreciate any insights on this.

Welcome to the Shard!

Yeah, as mentioned the bowwas  probably inherited from Sadeas who was noted to use one in WoK, typical of people with Shardplate but no Blade. Though it's also possible he obtained one for himself when he took Helaran's Shards, to have a ranged combat option. The text doesn't make it clear.

Good point, my assumption is Amaram inherited. It may not be the same one though.

Yeah, there's a bit of weirdness with Rock being able to draw that bow which has yet to be explained.

Can Stormlight give enough extra strength that a humanoid could use a Shardbow w/out Plate?

Brandon Sanderson

Not normally.

I don't think it works like that. I think the amount of strength you get from holding Stormlight is pretty constant regardless of holding more and I don't think he can feed it to his squires directly anyway,  just allow them to drain spheres for it.

Thank you all for the replies.

I think Rock is still a mystery in many ways. I am really waiting to know more about him.

Keep in mind, Rock is a Horneater, and they have Parshendi blood in their ancestry. That could mean they may manifest magic in a way slightly different than either the Knights Radiant, or the Parshendi. Call it a Horneater-varient KR.

If Rock has something unique about his powers, then Lopen (Herdazians also have Listener ancestry) may also not be a simple Knight Radiant. Call him a Herdazian-variant KR.

Natanatans may also have unique variations of abilities. (because of Aimian ancestry)

I think it is related to what is different about Rock that allows Rock to see Spren like Syl even when they aren't trying to show themselves to him. He is special in a way we don't understand yet, it probably has to do with his ancestry and being born and raised very near Cultivation's shardpool in the Horneater peaks. Not all horneater's have the ability to see spren when the spren don't want them to, but some do. They are called alaii’iku.

And that is a direct result of their Bloodline.

On Roshar, certain people seem to be able to always see spren (Rock comes to mind). Are there people who can never see them? Similarly, can people from other worlds see them?

Brandon Sanderson

Those with Listener blood are more likely to be able to interact with spren who aren't currently trying to manifest.

If they appear on the physical realm, then they're visible to all who can see.
