kari-no-sugata Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 In chapter 28, Tyn introduces Shallan to eyedrops that darken your eyes for a few hours. But I don't recall them being actually used. It's not like Shallan needs eyedrops for a disguise either... but surely these are going to be used at some point? My best idea: Kaladin will be nervous about going to visit his parents with light eyes and happens to mention it to Shallan (or in Shallan's hearing) and she suggests the eyedrops. Teeny tiny theory but just for a bit of fun PS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekhov%27s_gun 2
Kobold King he/him Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) I think you're on to something. I was waiting for them to be used over the course of the whole book. The only other appearance of theirs was when Moash was given a bottle. Edited March 28, 2014 by Kobold King
Bramble Thorn Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 They will definitely be used. Alternatively, they are ALREADY being used. The offspring of Lighteyes and Darkeyes can be either Lighteyes or Darkeyes, or halfeyed. Kaladin is a Light eyes name. OMG!!! Hesina is secretly a Lighteyes who hoped her firstborn son would be Lighteyes! And now Kaladin hates his mother. but doesn't know it yet!!! #YouHeardItHereFirst 3
Swimmingly he/him Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Graves does use them near the end, but I think they're less Chekhov's gun then element of the world. In other words, if they are such a gun, they've multiple shots.
happyman he/him Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I agree with Swimmingly. They are a useful part of the world, and we will probably see multiple characters use them over the course of many books. They probably aren't so much Chekhov's gun as they are yet another tool.
Elena she/her Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Kaladin is totally going to get a bottle of the stuff. Denial being a B., and all that...
11thorderknight Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I think Brandon simply put them in in order to give a reasonable explanation for how someone like Graves, and now Moash, could hide among the common people. Otherwise, it would be completely unbelievable. Also, I bet they wouldn't work for Kaladin or any other sufficiently-advanced Radiant. Their eyes are not merely light, they actually glow.
Swimmingly he/him Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Only when infusing Stormlight though. And I wouldn't be surprised if Stormlight burns it right off. So basically, it works as long as he doesn't infuse. 1

So basically, it works as long as he doesn't infuse. I doubt it would burn off. It is an external application. Does Stormlight clean dirty skin? But using it when you have enough to glow would probably be like how a modern computer/tv screen can be black, and still glowing so you can see off of it in the dark. So he would have dark, glowing eyes.
Swimmingly he/him Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Hi. As you can see, I am Kaladin, with my dark eyes and everything! They're glowing, son... SHHHHHHH 6
trendkill he/him Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Hi. As you can see, I am Kaladin, with my dark eyes and everything! They're glowing, son... SHHHHHHH These are not the eyes you're looking for... 4
kaellok he/him Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 These are not the eyes you're looking for... Wait...they're not? Then whose eyes are they, and why are you wearing them!?
Edgedancer he/him Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Wait...they're not? Then whose eyes are they, and why are you wearing them!? Son, does that mean you implanted someone´s eyes into your face because you didn´t want to be a Lighteyes? You have fallen far.
Delightful Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Fallen far and obviously advanced greatly in medicine. Son, tell me, how did you pull this off? Is there an application of this I can use to save someone's eyes? * cue Rosharan black market in organs* 4
kari-no-sugata Posted March 29, 2014 Author Posted March 29, 2014 Thanks for the correction/info, all. I had missed that reference.
Seonid he/him Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Just a note, I'm pretty sure that Shallan uses them when she disguises herself as Veil...
Odium's_Shard Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Just a note, I'm pretty sure that Shallan uses them when she disguises herself as Veil... Why would she need to? The Lightweaving can certainly cover that, I'm sure (I don't remember reading that it doesn't, if it couldn't that would indicate something very strange about being lighteyed). 1
