posts shown out of order

Recently I've noticed a couple of threads showed the posts not in order when I visited them. instead of being sorted chronologically, they seemed to be sorted with the OP first and all the answers soorted by number of upvotes. It's very annoying because I can hardly keep track of what I already read and what I didn't. I looked a bit at the settings but I can't find anything I may have triggered accideentally to achieve that effect. How can I fix it?

That is a feature specifically to the Cosmere Q&A Forum. It's intended for best answers to bubble to the top of the thread, and as such, it doesn't work well with longer discussions. Those should move over to the Cosmere Discussion forum.

If you want to see the posts in order, if you look below the original question you will see sort by date and a sort by vote box. The pages is normally on the sort by vote, but if you click sort by date it should change to the order they were posted in.
