Reminder: No Multiple Accounts

Recommended Posts

Suggestion: Maybe this should be pinned? Some scrolling down shows that a thread stays on page 1 about 3 weeks if there are no posts made in it, and this one is unlikely to get many, meaning that even though everyone currently is aware, people who join even in as little of a month from now may not realize it (even though they should, of course, be aware from the site's rules, but then that was true before this post as well).

Edit: That was fast.

this post just reminded me, I used to have an account called OreSeur on here (this was before I made nohadon) and I faced some login issues, so I made this account, my old account didn't really do much and I don't think I have access to it (I don't even try to log on to it) so if that account is still lying around, uh... don't ban me, I guess

There have been multiple instances of individuals having more than one account in the past month or two. Much of this is involved with Social Groups. I cannot surmise why someone would do this, but it often involves upvote manipulation and trying to manipulate people in multiple social groups, hence me posting this reminder in this forum. Perhaps some find having multiple accounts or joke accounts funny, but this is very serious.

How would you know if the used a different email address?

Plenty of ways. For this notice in particular, which is related to the social groups, people will most likely realize that two different names are the same person while interacting with them.

It's not very difficult to determine if two accounts are shared by the same user. Obviously, I don't want to give out details, but most times it is quite painfully obvious.

I believe that you need a warrant to track IP address.

Just so you know: search warrants are about what the government can do. (Just like with, say, free speech, that's purely a concept about what the government can prohibit. A private entity has no such restrictions.)

I'm not going to comment on this any further for obvious reasons. I would like to not give nefarious actors--which have existed on this forum before--any ideas. They probably already know, but we do not need to help them.

I'm well aware on how all this works, and have been administering forums for a long time. I know all these permutations on what can happen.
