Leyrann Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 Not entirely sure where to put this, so yeah... I want to start making music with some friends (still in a very early stage, very realistic chance of nothing ever happening at all), and we were considering writing an album about Kaladin's story in The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. The question is, assuming it gets released (and sold, even in very low volumes), do we need permission, because we are using Brandon's work, and if so, how can we (try to) get this permission?
Merrickz he/him Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 (edited) So I don't know if this helps or not but there has already been a fan album made for the story of Kaladin and the Way of Kings. https://brandonsanderson.com/kaladin-the-original-book-soundtrack-from-the-black-piper/ Although from what I've seen Brandon's attitude to fan projects are that they can be monetised as long as the people involved did work themselves and aren't just plagiarising his stuff with no effort Edit: I am entirely wrong. Very dumb. Please ignore me Edited May 3, 2018 by Merrickz Correction
Pagerunner he/him Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 This will be a question to ask to Brandon's team directly. I'd recommend using the contact form on the website: https://brandonsanderson.com/contact/. You could also check the FAQ on his website: faq.brandonsanderson.com/ in case he has a general answer.

FAQ seems broken to me. I'll try to just contact directly though. We're still in super super early stage, but one of the other guys wanted to know copyright wasn't an issue, so best to just get that out of the way immediately. Would this count as "rights to one of Brandon's books or stories" though? Edited May 2, 2018 by Leyrann
Kalak he/him Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Hey there, I worked on the linked Kaladin album above and I can tell you right now it's a hurdle to get authorized to use any of Brandon's IP. It's not impossible (again, see above) but you definitely have to get permission. I would 100% recommend securing permission first, even if you don't intend to try and sell it. That or do an original story/public domain work. 1
